Elaine Jones
Head Coach
Jones is entering her fifth year as head coach of the Longwood womens lacrosse program in 2016-17, having led the Lancers to top-five finishes during all four years of the programs Big South membership and two top-three finishes. Formerly the head coach at the University of California Davis, Jones is responsible for all aspects of the Longwood program, including oversight of practice and game preparation, game strategy and recruiting. In her four seasons at the helm, Jones holds a 14-7 record in the Big South and a 33-40 overall record. Jones has yet to have a team end the season with a losing record in Big South play. After her squad ended the 2016 season with a 4-4 record in conference play, Jones team attracted a slew of Big South accolades, including Shiloh Mackenzies Co- Defensive Player of the Year selection, coinciding with her All-Big South first team honors. McKenzie was one of three of the programs most accomplished seniors to graduate in 2015, joining all-time points leaders Sarah Butler and Katie McHugh. The trio was the first group to spend all four years under Jones, and culminated a fantastic senior season in which McKenzie earned the programs first-ever Big South Defensive Player of the Year award. In addition, Butler and McHugh ended their careers ranked among the schools top five all-time in goals, assists and points, with McHugh setting Longwoods all-time career and single season points records. Longwood ended the 2015 year 8-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play to pick up a No. 5 seed in the Big South tournament. The .500 Big South record secured the programs fourth consecutive top-five finish for the Lancers under Jones. Longwood finished 9-10 overall in 2014, including a 5-2 record in the Big South Conference, advancing to the conference tournament semifinals as the No. 3 seed. That team was also led by Butler, who earned her second straight All-Big South first team honor. In her first year with the program, Jones guided Longwood to a 10-8 overall record, including a 5-2 Big South record in the league's inaugural year for the sport. Her squad took third place at the Big South Conference Championship, as well. Jones served as the head coach of the UC Davis program from 2001-12 and compiled an overall record of 97-90 (.519) during her tenure, including six winning seasons. She led the Aggies to a top-five NCAA Division II national ranking for three consecutive years (2002-04) and helped the program make a successful transition to Division I, as her squad posted a solid 10-9 record during its first season playing a predominantly DI schedule in 2005. In 2012, she coached the schools first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Co-Rookie of the Year and Regional Division I All-American. Some of Jones accolades at UC Davis include earning a DI Statistical Award for leading the nation in draw controls in 2011 and garnering LaxPowers Most Improved DI Womens Lacrosse Program in 2010. She has coached a total of eight All-Americans and 18 All-MPSF selections. Off the field, Jones has also showed a commitment to academic excellence, developing 37 Academic All-MPSF honorees, eight IWLCA All-Academic Team members, two Academic All-America selections, one Academic All-District honoree, one IWLCA Division II Scholar Athlete of the Year, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and an NCAA Woman of the Year winner. Prior to joining the staff at UC Davis, Jones served as the assistant director of compliance, as well as the head coach of the club womens lacrosse team at the University of Southern California from 1998-2001. Jones began her coaching career as an assistant at the University of Massachusetts from 1993-95. Jones was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American student-athlete at the University of Virginia, leading the Cavaliers to four straight national postseason appearances, including a National Championship in 1991. She later played four years on the Elite Squad of the U.S. National Team. A native of Baltimore, Md., Jones earned her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1992 before continuing on to receive her Master of Science in sport management from Massachusetts in 1996 and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami School of Law in 1998.
