Berthold has helped tutor 11 all-conference selections and two all-region picks as well as helping the team to four straight appearances in the conference tournament from 2011-14. In 2015, he helped the Warriors to its fourth straight winning season, as the squad posted a 17-14 record and narrowly missed the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the first time in four seasons. The 2014 Warriors notched an 18-17 record while reaching the Commonwealth Conference semifinals for the second time in three years thanks to a first round tournament win over Widener. The team also produced two all-conference and two honorable mention all-region selections. In 2013, the Warriors posted a 25-11 record, producing the program's best winning percentage since 1998. The team also reached the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the third straight year and produced two all-conference selections. In 2012, Berthold helped mentor a young group to the school's first 20-win season since 2003, as the program went 22-13 and reached the Commonwealth Conference semifinals, winning a first-round match at Widener, the program's first playoff win since 2006, its last year in the Freedom Conference. In 2011, he helped guide the team to a breakthrough year, as the team won four conference matches to reach the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the first time since the school joined the league in 2007. A 1991 graduate of Lycoming College with a bachelor of arts in music, Berthold earned a master's degree in secondary school counseling from the University of Scranton in 1995. His father, Howard, is a professor emeritus at Lycoming, serving as a professor of psychology for 35 years at the school. Berthold is a secondary school counselor at Muncy High School and has formed and coached several teams from the high school. He competes in local volleyball leagues and regional tournaments. Berthold resides in Williamsport with his wife, Shari, and two daughters, Abby and Ellie.
