Gregg Olson
Head Coach
Olson completed his fourth season as head coach of the Macalester men's soccer team in 2015 with major successes. Olson led the Scots to the MIAC regular-season championship, the NCAA Division III Tournament and a No. 20 ranking in the final NSCAA Division III national rankings. He was named the North Region Coach of the Year and the MIAC Coach of the Year as the Scots posted an unbeaten regular season and captured the MIAC regular-season championship with an 8-0-2 mark in conference play. Six players were honored with All-MIAC Honors and three earned All-Region. The success led to a national ranking as high as No. 11 and an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Scots defeated St. Scholastica, 1-0 at Macalester Stadium on Nov. 16 in the first round for the program's first NCAA win since 2009. The Scots have improved in each of the last three seasons under Olson, including the 2014 squad that went 11-6-2 and qualified for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since 2010. In four seasons at Macalester, he has a record of 37-29-10. In 2014, Olson guided the Scots to a 6-3-1 mark in conference play to finish in fifth place. Five of Olsons players were included on the All-MIAC and honorable mention teams. At the annual Macalester Athletics annual award banquet, mens soccer players received the Senior, Sophomore and First-Year awards honoring the top performances of the year by class. Off the field, Olsons squad performed exceptionally well in the classroom, achieving a 3.42 team grade-point average to rank 15th among 820 mens soccer programs nationally across all divisions and first in the MIAC. In 2013, Macalester posted an overall record of 8-8-2 (4-4-2 MIAC) and five Scots were awarded with All-MIAC honors. Olson was at Stanford University in Stanford, California, for four seasons and held the David and Kathy Carey Assistant Directorship for Stanford men's soccer in 2011. A four-year starter for the soccer team and 2000 graduate from the University of Vermont, Olson began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 2002 before moving on to become an assistant for Stanford in 2008. Coaching many All-Pac 10 selections, Olson aided in developing future MLS players, Academic All-Americans, and a Hermann Trophy semi-finalist. In 2009, the Cardinal advanced to the NCAA Division I Sweet 16. At Vermont, he helped the Catamounts reach the conference tourney four times, win the 2007 America East Conference, and reach the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament. Olson coached and recruited numerous current professional players and each season of his collegiate career his teams have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award. Olson has coached numerous club soccer teams, including currently serving as the head coach of his second Minneapolis United team. Previous clubs include: Palo Alto SC (Calif.), Santa Clara Sporting (Calif.), and Nordic SC (Vt.). Olson has led his club teams to eight state championships, a regional championship, won such prestigious events as Surf Cup, USA Cup and Cerritos. His club teams have ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation (GotSoccer). In addition to club soccer, Olson has been involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as a head State Team coach since 2003. Currently he is on staff with Region II ODP. A native of Rockford, Illinois, Olson graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Geography from Vermont, where he was team captain as a senior. Olson also was a three-time winner of the team's Donoson Fitzgerald Award for Perseverance, Integrity and Sportsmanship. After graduating from college, Olson spent two seasons playing semi-professionally before beginning his coaching career. Olson resides in St. Paul. Oscar Campbell
Assistant Coach
Oscar Campbell joined the Macalester men’s soccer coaching staff as the program’s full-time assistant coach in prior to the 2023 season. A former standout at Hamline University, Campbell serves as the Scots’ recruiting coordinator and assists head coach Gregg Olson with all on and off field operations of the men’s soccer program. "Oscar comes to Macalester with great experience within the MIAC. After a stellar career as a player at Hamline, he coached collegiately since 2019 and he has been involved in youth soccer here in Minnesota for many years. I'm very excited for Oscar to impact the program and our student-athletes," said Olson. Prior to coming to Macalester, Campbell was the Director of Coaching, Rec Director, and Registrar for the Bloomington Youth Soccer Club, where he was responsible for developing curriculum for both recreational and competitive programs. He oversaw the coaching staff, coordinated schedules, and was the liaison for manager, coach, and family communication. Campbell successfully executed tryouts and spring training. In addition to working at the Bloomington Youth Soccer Club, Campbell worked as an Olympic Development Program (ODP) coach at the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association and coached at Coerver Coaching. He was the assistant coach for the 2007 boys at the Region II Showcase. Before Coerver Coaching, Campbell was an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at his alma mater Hamline Univeristy. He was involved in recruiting, developing game plans, player development, and gameday operations. "I want to thank Athletic Director Donnie Brooks, Head Coach Gregg Olson, and the rest of the search committee for the opportunity to join the men's soccer staff," said Campbell. "Macalester soccer has a long and proud tradition of excellence on the field and in the classroom that I am thrilled to be joining. I look forward to getting to know the program, student-athletes, staff and school. Coach Olson and former assistant Josh Roy have created an enjoyable and fulfilling student-athlete experience that I'm excited to help continue and build upon." A native of Minneapolis, Campbell played collegiately at Hamline, helping lead the Pipers to the MIAC Playoffs in 2015 and 2017. He was three-time captain, two-time All-MIAC First Team honoree, and named to the All-Region First team and received Academic All-Region honors in 2017. Campbell was also named the SAAC Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Campbell received his bachelor's degrees in Sociology and Business Administration, with a concentration in Sport Management in 2018.
