Margaret Gehring
Head Coach
Gehring is in her second year as head coach of the Macalester College Men's and Women's Track and Field programs after being named to the position at the start of the 2014-2015 school year. In her first year at Macalester she successfully coached both teams to MIAC Top 10 finishes for the indoor and outdoor seasons with All-Conference honors awarded to six athletes. Six school records were either tied or broken under Gehring's leadership and she led Logan Hovie to All-America finishes both indoors and outdoors in the high jump. Gehring brings 20 years of successful coaching and higher education experience at the Division III level to her new position with the Scots after heading women's cross country and track and field programs at both Ohio Wesleyan University and the College of Saint Benedict a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) member institution. During that time, Gehring coached a total of 13 All-Americans and led 23 individuals to the NCAA National Championships. During her six years at the helm of the Ohio Wesleyan programs, Gehring led the track and field team to four North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship titles and coached 34 individual NCAC champions, nine All-Americans and 14 national meet participants. She was named the NCAC Coach of the Year on three occasions. In addition to her coaching role, Gehring taught physical education courses, served one year as the interim Associate Athletic Director and worked on seven University committees. Prior to her time at Ohio Wesleyan, Gehring led the Saint Benedict cross country and track and field teams for three seasons. Under her leadership, the Blazer track and field team turned in three fourth-place team finishes at the MIAC Championships and had 32 All-MIAC performers. Gehring also coached the Blazer cross country team to a second-place finish at the MIAC Championships in 1992. Not only does Gehring bring a wealth of coaching experience to Macalester, but she has directed meets at the highest level of competition including intercollegiate conference and national meets and has served on several executive committees. From 1997-1998, Gehring served as president of the NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association after a four year term as vice president. She was also an executive board member for the United States Track Coaches Association for three years. Gehring earned her doctorate in sport and physical education from Ohio State University in 2002 where her dissertation work focused on the career longevity of Division III track and field coaches. She has been a published researcher in multiple international journals and has presented at national coaches meetings, as well as physical and health education conventions. Additionally, Gehring served as a visiting adjunct faculty at Pacific Lutheran University and the University of the West Indies. Prior to her doctoral work, Gehring completed a master's degree in sport and exercise studies at Smith College. While at Smith, Gehring assisted with the women's cross country and track and field programs for two seasons. She earned her bachelor's in exercise science from the University at Buffalo. Matt Haugen
Coach
Haugen has directed the Macalester cross country and track middle distance and distance program since 2003. He has guided his Macalester cross country teams to four top-four MIAC, and four top-10 Central Region finishes, and was the MIAC Coach of the Year in his inaugural season. Haugen also served as the Women's and Men's Co-Head Track and Field Coach for the 2013-14 season. Macalester cross country runners have achieved All-MIAC (12 times), and All-Region (12 times) honors each season, and earned one NCAA berth in 2009. On the oval, Haugen has coached All-MIAC performers in the 800M, 1500M, Mile, 5000M, 10,000M, and 4x800M and Distance Medley relays. His track runners have set six school records, and have posted over 60 all-time top 10 Macalester performances. Macalester cross country student-athletes have also earned All-American Academic Team honors since 2006. Prior to his arrival at Macalester, Haugen was the USA Triathlon National Teams Coach and Program Director from 1997 through the 2000 Olympic Games. He coached four World Championship teams (silver medalists), the 1999 Pan Am Games team (silver medal), three world cup medalists, and two USA National Champions. Haugen was the USOC Triathlon Coach of the Year three times. Haugen served as a faculty member at St. Olaf College from 1985-1997, where he coached All-Americans in cross country, nordic skiing, and track. His first collegiate coaching position was at Macalester (1985), where he coached the MIAC women's 100-meter dash champion. He was St. Olaf College head women's track & field coach in 1997 and served as USA Triathlon national team head coach from 1997 to 2000. Haugen received a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Olaf College, and a master's in exercise science from Penn State University. He was also a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis on sport psychology. Haugen was the MIAC cross country champion, and an All-American (5th place), in 1977 at St. Olaf College. He later posted personal bests of 2:23 in the marathon, 8 hours and 41 minutes in the Ironman triathlon, and was the Master's Champion in the Pikes Peak Marathon. He continues to pursue endurance challenges, and participate in multi-sport events as a coach and clinician.
