Patrick Daugherty

Head Coach

Daugherty, who is the only coach the cross country programs have ever known, has steadily improved both teams in each of his nine previous seasons as evidenced by MU's climb in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships each season. Under Daugherty's guidance 2011 graduate Sarah Sherwood earned All-WHAC first team honors for three straight seasons and made three appearances at the NAIA National Championships. Cross country's most successful season to date was 2011 as the women's team came in third at the WHAC championships led by individual champion Bianca Kubicki. Kubicki became MU's first cross country individual champion and became the second runner - joining Sherwood in 2008, 2009 and 2010 - to run at the NAIA National Championships. On the men's side Daugherty has had three runners advance to the NAIA National Championships in Tim Boes in 2012 while both Ahron Gunn and Alec Smith qualified in 2014. Gunn was named the WHAC Newcomer of the Year in 2014 as well. The success extends into the classroom as Daugherty led teams have posted grade point averages above 3.0 in each of his seasons as head coach. Daugherty went on to say, "The time is perfect for Madonna University to start and build a highly competitive track and field program for both the men's and women's teams. We have great leadership and direction from our new president, Dr. Michael Grandillo, Ph. D and Bryan Rizzo, our athletic director. We have a great location to draw highly skilled and competitive student athletes from in southeastern Michigan. The area has a rich tradition of outstanding track & field individuals and teams which will enable us to recruit the very best student athletes. Our athletic programs at Madonna University have the highest level of work ethic and character traits that I hope to continue with the cross country and track and field teams. We also have collectively the most competitive athletic program in the WHAC. My desire as the coach for the indoor and outdoor track and field teams is to develop highly competitive individuals and teams with the main goal to be WHAC champions and NAIA qualifiers on a year-to-year basis. Our team will represent the university at the highest level both academically and with great character. Our success will be defined by our willingness to do our best in each practice, each meet as a team and each individual event, and in the classroom. Nothing less will be good enough for me as a coach or Madonna University." Prior to coming to Madonna, Daugherty was an assistant boy's track and cross country coach at Livonia Churchill High School from 2002 to 2004. He is currently the girl's head track coach at Churchill as well, having just completed his 15th season with the Chargers overall and ninth as head coach. During his tenure on the Churchill staff, the team set school records in the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, the 3200 meter relay, the 4x100 meter relay, the high jump and the pole vault. Daugherty has also coached over 100 state qualifiers and has had six all-state honorees. As a team the Chargers won the Livonia City Championship nine years in a row and won the state regional championship from 2008-2013 before winning it again last spring. In addition to his Churchill experience, Daugherty has also served as the head boy's and girl's cross country coach at Frost Middle School in Livonia and as a P.E./Health teacher in both the Livonia and Taylor School Districts. Daugherty is a native of Norfolk, Va., but grew up in southeastern Michigan and attended both Central and Eastern Michigan Universities. After completing his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan in 1994, Daugherty earned his teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan in 1999 and his master's degree in Educational Leadership in 2005. Furthering his education on the track, Daugherty has earned both level one and level two USATF coaching certifications in addition to attending the Michigan State University Summer Coaches School and is in the process of becoming a certified strength and conditioning coach (CSCC). An avid runner, Daugherty has run numerous long distance races over the past 15 years including starting and finishing seven different marathons including the Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and Boston marathons. Chinney McGee, a successful track & field coach at the high school, college and club levels, joined the MU coaching staff in early 2016. McGee began his track career at Saginaw Valley State University before moving on to Emporia State (Kan.) where he was a two-time C.S.I.C. champion in the 400 meters, winning Athlete of the Year honors. The standout student-athlete began coaching at Atherton High School where he led the boys team to its first winning record in school history and a conference runner-up finish. After his time at Atherton, McGee moved on to Michigan and assumed the role at Flint Southwesterns girls coach. During his two years at the helm with Southwestern, McGee coached a pair of Nike All-American sprinters and two Saginaw Valley Conference Most Valuable Athletes. Under his direction, McGee had an athlete go All-State in the 100,200, and1,600 meter relay as well as the 400 meter event, including a State Champion in the 400-meter and 800 relay. After Southwestern, McGee moved up to coach collegiate track and field at Saginaw Valley State University where he coached the GLIAC runner-up in the 60-meter (indoor) and the 100-meter (outdoor) events. From SVSU, McGee went on to coach Ypsilanti High School where he led Ypsilanti to a MHSAA State runner-up finish in his first year. While at Ypsilanti, McGee coached a trio of National Scholastic All-Americans, a Wendys High school Heisman finalist, a Michigan Gatorade Athlete of the Year and a pair Michigan Indoor Outstanding performers. Adding on to the heralded list while at Ypsilanti, the longtime coach was also able to help mold over 20 All-State student-athletes, including three state champions, six Washtnew County Athletes of the Year and numerous conference champions that set a handful of conference records. Overall, McGee has coached three Midwest Meet of Champions gold medalists, 10 state champions and 43 All-State performers and has had student-athletes break 24 school records. McGee also was the head coach the Flint All-Stars track club, where he guided 25 All-Americans including a three-time USA Gold medalist, nine national champions and had athletes break five National records. For his efforts, McGee was named AAU Indoor National Coach of the Year in 2007, Saginaw Valley Coach of the Year in 2008 and Washtnew County Coach of the Year 2013. McGee, who is USATF level one certified, is a graduate of Flint Central High School. His daughter, Dynasty, holds the state record in the indoor (400) and is a three-time First Team All-American, earning 10 All-Big Ten nods along with three Academic All-American honors at Penn State University. McGee also has two other daughters who have earned All-American honors, Summer and China, who currently attend Norte Dame. Chinney resides locally with his wife, Tina.
