Mark McClure

Head Coach

McClure completed his seventh year as the head coach of the mens and womens track and field teams at Malone University in 2014-15, once again guiding the Pioneers to very successful indoor and outdoor seasons.  Competing in one of the top track & field conferences in NCAA Division II, the Malone men registered a sixth-place finish at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships (among 14 teams) while the Pioneer women were seventh among 16 schools.  A total of 12 student athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships during Malones first two years of Division II postseason eligibility, highlighted by hurdler Emily Fisher, who became the Pioneers first NCAA Track & Field All-American in 2014 after finishing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. The Pioneers rich tradition of success in track and field has continued to flourish during McClures tenure at the helm of the program.  Prior to the Malone athletic departments departure from the NAIA and move to NCAA Division II, the Pioneer men registered three Top 10 finishes at NAIA National Meets (fifth-place Indoor finish in 09-10, seventh-place indoor finish in 08-09, sixth-place outdoor finish in 08-09) in addition to capturing the 2010 NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Outdoor National Crown.  The Pioneer women have also thrived under McClures guidance, claiming the 2009 NCCAA Outdoor National Championship and three consecutive conference titles. A 1986 Green High School graduate, McClure was the Ohio High School runner-up in the high jump and a member of Greens 1986 Division I State Track and Field Championship Team.  He graduated from Malone in 1991 with a degree in Physical Education after a stellar collegiate track career.  McClure won an NCCAA National Championship in the high jump and also currently holds the Malone decathlon record. McClure received a masters degree in Physical Education (Athletic Administration) from Ohio University in 1992.  For the past five seasons before taking over the reins of the Pioneer track & field program, he served as the head track & field and cross country coach at John Carroll University.  He led his 2006 JCU womens track & field team to a 12th-place finish at the NCCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships and coached a total of 13 All-Americans during his tenure at the school.  Prior to his stint at JCU, McClure served for nine years (1994-2003) as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Miami University.  He has also been an assistant coach at the University of Akron (1993-94), Emory (GA) University (1992-93) and Ohio University (1991-92).   McClure was inducted into the Malone Athletics Hall of Fame in January of 2007.  He and his wife, Bonnie, a former state champion in the 800 meters, and their five children, Collin (14), Conner (12), Caden (9), Caleb (7), and Caylie (4), reside in Green.

Jack Hazen

Head Coach

Hazen has served as head coach of mens cross country at Malone University for 48 years and as women's cross country head coach for 24 years. His mens program still ranks as the all-time winningest program as ranked by the NAIA and his 1972 mens team became the first Malone team to earn an NAIA national championship while his 1999 womens team became the second. The Pioneers have captured a total of four mens cross country titles and one womens cross country title during Hazens tenure.  In the fall of 2007, the mens cross country team captured the programs second NAIA national title, completing a perfect season after having finished first in every meet in which it competed. The Pioneer men backed up their incredible 2007 campaign with another national championship in 2008 as the squad held the NAIAs #1 national ranking from the seasons start to finish. Then, in the fall of 2009, the men's program collected an incredible "three-peat" by capturing its third straight NAIA national title. During Malones time in the NAIA, Hazens mens squad qualified for the NAIA national meet each and every year, never losing a conference/district meet. In addition, his mens team recorded 35 top-ten NAIA national finishes.  The Pioneers rich tradition of cross country success has continued throughout the institutions transition to NCAA Division II membership.  Last fall, the mens team placed ninth at the Division II National Championship Meet while the womens squad finished 11th.  In 2014, the womens team also became the first NCAA Division II program to claim the All-Ohio Championship, joining Cedarville Universitys 2008 squad as the only non-Division I programs to capture the overall All-Ohio Title.  On the mens side, Malone has claimed an incredible total of eight overall All-Ohio Championships, the last one coming in 2008.  Jack also served as the head coach of mens track & field for 28 years and womens for three years. He has coached over 325 NAIA All-Americans in cross country and track & field, which represents over 80% of the All-Americans in all of Malone athletics history.  The All-America trend has continued since Malone moved to Division II as womens cross country runner Tina Oprean became the first Pioneer athlete in any sport to earn NCAA Division II All-America recognition in 2013.  Andrew Trusty and Ryan Roush then captured All-America honors for the mens cross country squad in the fall of 2014.  Jack recently served as an assistant coach for the USA Track and Field Team during the 2012 Olympic Games. In addition to working with the men's distance runners for Team USA at the London Olympics, he has had several previous international coaching opportunities. He was named Head Manager for the 1999 Junior Pan American Track & Field Team and was twice named as U.S. Coach for mens cross country at the World Championships in Boston and Capetown, South Africa. He was also selected as the Assistant Coach for the U.S. World Championship meet in Helsinki, Finland in 2005.  Jack has coached two Olympians and served on the Track & Field Competition Management Team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A member of the USA Track & Field Board of Directors, Jack has written textbooks on coaching and has been published numerous times. But most importantly, he has impacted many lives for Christ at Malone University. Get to know more about Jack through Malone's Pioneer Spotlight

Brian Kelly

Assistant Coach

Kelly was the top pole vaulter in the NAIA and with five total chances to compete at the NAIA national meet (indoor and outdoor), he placed no lower than third at those national events. In 1989, he placed third in the pole vault at both the indoor and outdoor NAIA national meets while also earning the NCCAA national title that year. He then went on to become a two-time NAIA national champion, winning the outdoor title in the pole vault as a junior and a senior. In all, he claimed five NAIA All-America honors including an indoor national runner-up finish as a senior. He also earned the NCCAA pole vault national title in 1991. In addition, Brian was a three-time All-Ohio Champion (in 1989, 90, and 91).   As a decathlete, Brian has scored 6128 points, which still ranks him in the top 10 all-time at Malone. He still holds Malones indoor pole vault record at 170 and, with a leap of 17 4 ¾, has the second highest jump in Malone history, only ¼ behind the Pioneer record holder. And, oh yes, that record holder ---- none other than the 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Tim Mack. Brian is currently one of the most respected vault coaches in the state of Ohio.  He previously served as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy where he coached the 2008 and 2010 Ohio Division II state runner-up in the girls pole vault. He also helped direct CVCA to Ohio Girls Division II Track & Field Championships in both 2008 and 2009.
