Jeff Caulfield
Head Coach
Caulfield returns for his 13th season at the helm of the Valiant baseball program in 2017. A four-time conference Coach of the Year, Caulfield is 262-226-1 in 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including a 145-94 record in conference play. Over those 12 seasons, Caulfield has coached two All-Americans, 19 All-Region selections, four Conference Players of the Year and 61 All-Conference selections. One of only three coaches (along with current head men's basketball coach Pat Scanlon) ever to coach a sport at Manhattanville for at least 13 seasons, he became the department's all-time leader in career wins with his 203rd career victory on April 13, 2014 at FDU-Florham. Manhattanville earned a berth in the MAC Freedom Tournament for the fifth consecutive year in 2016, boasting a 25-16 record. Four Valiants were named to the All-Conference team, including junior Robbie Lynch, who was named MAC Freedom Player of the Year in addition to a D3baseball first-team All-Region and ABCA second-team All-Region honoree. Lynch, along with teammates Chris Conklin and Jordanis Nunez were named to the All-MAC Freedom first team, while freshman Luke Scoggins secured a spot on the second team. Lynch's huge season for the Valiants included several record moments, including a school-record nine RBIs in a win over FDU-Florham and a new school record with 132 RBIs for his career after just three seasons. Thanks to Lynch's honor, Manhattanville has had at least one All-Region pick in 10 of Caulfield's 12 years at the helm, and 19 of the programs 21 All-Region honors have come under his successful watch. Manhattanville returned to the Freedom Conference Tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons in 2015, posting a 23-18 mark and 14-7 record in Freedom Conference play. Six Valiants (including four underclassmen) earned All-Freedom Conference recognition after the season, led by two-time first-team selection Robbie Lynch. Caulfield brought the Valiants back to the title round of the Freedom Conference Championships in 2014 and came within an inch of a third conference title despite entering as the fourth seed, ending the year with a 24-16 record. The Valiants knocked off the top seed for the third straight year and also took out second-seeded Misericordia before two tough losses in the title round. The mentor was named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year following the season, his school-record tying fourth coaching honor, and he saw eight players named to the All-Freedom Conference teams, including first-team selection and D3baseball.com All-Region pick Chris Conklin. The 2013 season saw Manhattanville reach the postseason for the second consecutive season as the fourth seed, as the Valiants pulled out two dramatic victories over FDU-Florham on the last day of the conference season to clinch a berth to the Freedom Conference Tournament. As the fourth seed, Manhattanville upset top-seeded Misericordia by a 2-1 score in 10 innings, the second straight season that the Valiants defeated the top seed. At the conclusion of the season, Caulfield saw four players earn All-Conference Honorable Mention honors, including the team's third straight Rookie of The Year honoree in shortstop Jordanis Nunez. In 2012, Caulfield guided a team with 18 underclassmen to a 16-22 record against a customarily difficult schedule that included seven games against nationally ranked opponents. The Valiants made the Freedom Conference Tournament for the fourth time and defeated #10 Misericordia before bowing out of the postseason. Caulfield helped coach four All-Conference honorees on the year, including Freedom Conference Player of the Year Dan Fiorito and Freedom Rookie of the Year Michael Lyon, while Fiorito was named an ABCA third-team All-American and earned consensus All-Region honors from the ABCA and D3Baseball.com. Caulfield faced perhaps his toughest coaching challenge the previous year in 2011, as he had to find a way to replace nine key contributors and six everyday starters. Despite fielding the youngest roster in his tenure at Manhattanville, he guided the team to an 8-1 start, one of the best in program history. After the season, the team was recognized with four All-Freedom Conference honorees and the conference Rookie of the Year in Alex Basso, while junior Chris Nardozzi was named to the ABCA All-Region second team. In 2010, Caulfield guided the Valiants to the programs first Freedom Conference Tournament championship and second NCAA Tournament berth with a 22-21-1 overall record, the teams fourth straight year with a conference regular-season or tournament title. Six players were honored with spots on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Paul Blejec, who was one of four first-team selections and also was named to the ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. Dan Fiorito also became the first player in program history to earn All-America honors with an honorable mention from D3Baseball.com. Caulfield was named the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Valiants to a 26-17 overall record and the Freedom Conference regular-season championship, the programs third straight conference regular-season title. The skipper became the second active Manhattanville coach to reach the 100-win plateau on March 8 with a 13-12 win over La Roche College. Caulfields players also received plenty of individual accolades, as Stephen Pinto was named the conference Player of the Year and National ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner to lead three All-Conference honorees and two Valiants to be named to the ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams. In the team's first season with the Freedom Conference in 2008, Caulfield guided the Valiants to a 29-13 record, including a 14-4 mark in conference play. Manhattanville won a conference regular-season championship for the second consecutive season and also earned a berth in the Freedom Tournament Championship game. Four Valiants were named to the All-Conference first team to lead six overall All-Freedom honorees, while Pinto was named to the ABCA All-Region team for a second time. Caulfield led the Valiants to the first Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships in program history in 2007, guiding Manhattanville to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The team finished the year ranked seventh in the New York Region and was comprised mainly of young talent recruited by Caulfield, as six of the Valiants' nine starters were freshmen or sophomores. As a result, Caulfield was named Skyline Coach of the Year for a second time and the Valiants earned seven All-Conference honorees, including five on the first team, and a program-record five ABCA All-Region selections. The 2006 Valiants also qualified for the postseason, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament and finishing the year 22-19, including a 13-5 mark in the Skyline Conference. In his first season of 2005, Caulfield led the Valiants to a 23-15 mark, setting a program record for wins by a first-year coach and earning Skyline Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time. He also coached a program-record eight All-Conference honorees, including an amazing six players on the All-Skyline first team. Before taking the head coaching reigns of the Valiant program, Caulfield worked as an assistant at Manhattanville from 2002-04, serving as the team's pitching coach. A 2000 graduate of New York Region power Cortland State, Caulfield was a part of the Red Dragon team for five seasons as a player and coach, helping the team to the College World Series in each year. Caulfield also earned his Master's Degree from Mercy College in 2004.
