Kate Vlahakis
Head Coach
Vlahakis returns for for her fifth season as the head coach of the Manhattanville women's basketball team in 2016-17. Vlahakis led the Valiants to a breakout season in 2015-16, compiling an 18-8 overall record, 9-5 in MAC Freedom play. The Valiants began the year with the best 20-game start in nearly three decades, beginning the year 14-6. The team would go on to defeat FDU-Florham at home, marking the first win in five seasons over the Devils. The team's three seniors, Ashley Franklin, Bri Pabon, and Ashley Raaf were all named to the All-MAC Freedom teams, the first time that each player was named to the squad. The team also was regionally ranked as high as third by the NCAA during the season, marking the highest such ranking in recent program history. Vlahakis guided another young roster to an 11-14 record in 2014-15, despite playing most of the year with only one senior on the squad. That senior, Alyson Caiazzo, earned multiple honors during her final year, recognized as a D3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region second-team and MBWA All-Met third-team honoree in addition to her third straight All-Freedom Conference selection. Caiazzo also graduated as the school's all-time leader in rebounds, blocks and field-goal percentage despite playing less than four full years at the school. Carrying a very young roster comprised of only three juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen in 2013-14, Vlahakis coached her squad to a 10-15 record in her second season at the helm. The Valiants competed at a high level all season long and saw the development of several key contributors, as all five starters averaged in double figures for most of the year. Vlahakis also coached Caiazzo to All-Freedom Conference second-team honors for the second season in a row. In her first season, despite not taking over as head coach until the second week of the school year, Vlahakis guided the Valiants to a 10-14 overall record, a one-game improvement from the season prior. She also helped senior Taylor Wilson and Caiazzo earn All-Freedom Conference second-team honors, while Caiazzo also was named to the MBWA All-Met first team as well. Vlahakis came to Manhattanville after a two-year stint at Framingham State University, where she served as an assistant coach under Patricia O'Brien and played a vital role in all aspects of the Division III program. As coach with the Rams, she helped the program to a MASCAC Tournament appearance in her second season and also mentored the reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Year as well as a second-team All-Conference performer. Prior to her time in Framingham, Vlahakis served three seasons as an assistant coach at Simmons College. While in Boston, the Sharks posted a combined 44-29 record in three years and earned a spot in the GNAC Tournament in all three seasons. A native of Lebanon, N.H., Vlahakis played for nationally ranked St. Lawrence University where she earned all-tournament recognition and was named the most improved player in 2003. While at St. Lawrence, Vlahakis was a member of the Saints team that posted a perfect record in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (now the Liberty League), earned a conference championship, and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Vlahakis graduated from St. Lawrence in 2007 and also earned her master's degree in business with a specialization in Athletic Administration from Southern New Hampshire University in 2012. A native of Lebanon, N.H., Vlahakis currently resides in Queens, N.Y.
