Kevin Kelly

Head Coach

Kelly returns for his ninth season at the helm of the Manhattanville field hockey program in 2016. In his first eight seasons at the helm, Kelly has become the program's all-time winningest coach with 65 victories at Manhattanville. In addition, the team's three straight 11-win seasons from 2011 to 2013 are the third-most successful three-year stretch in program history and mark only the fourth time ever that a Valiant field hockey program has achieved double-digit wins three years in a row. In his eighth season in 2015, Kelly continued to help the Valiants rebuild, compiling a roster that featured 17 underclassmen.  Despite the youth, the Valiants posted a 6-13 record on the season.  At the season's end, junior Bregje Smits was named to the All-MAC Freedom team as a second-team defender.   During his seventh season, Kelly went through a rebuilding year, settling for a 4-14 record. In 2014, Kelly helped develop an inexperienced team of 16 underclassmen, including 11 freshmen on the roster. At the end of the season, graduate student Kirsten Savage and sophomore Bregje Smits were named to the Freedom Conference Honorable Mention list. In his sixth year, Kelly helped lead the team to an overall record of 11-8, placing the team in a four-way tie for second place in the competitive Freedom Conference. Manhattanville boasted a record-setting offensive attack, ranking eighth in Division III by averaging 4.26 goals per game and setting new program single-season records with 81 goals, 43 assists and 207 points as a team. Senior Amanda DeChent matched her program single-season records with 30 goals and 73 points in 2013, while sophomore Rylee McGuire also posted the third-best offensive season in program history with 21 goals and 55 points. After the year, DeChent was named a second consecutive NFHCA All-American selection, in addition to NFHCA All-South Region first-team honors and a Freedom Conference Player of the Year nod for the second straight year. DeChent also joined McGuire, Sharon Konfederak and Bregje Smits on the All-Freedom Conference teams. In 2012, Kelly led the team to an overall record of 11-8, including a six-game winning streak between late-September and mid-October that saw the team outscore its opponents 29-16. During the stretch Manhattanville won three straight overtime victories, all on game-winners by junior Amanda DeChent. The junior finished with the best individual season in program history, recording new school and Freedom Conference single-season records with 30 goals and 73 points in addition to a school-record seven game-winning tallies. After the season, DeChent was named the team's first-ever NFHCA first-team All-American, after also being named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year. She also joined teammates Melissa Goncalves and Kayla Meenan on the All-Freedom Conference teams. In his fourth season with the Valiants, Kelly delivered Manhattanville to a Freedom Conference Tournament appearance for the first time, as the Valiants made the conference semifinals as the fourth seed. The team came out of the gates hot, tying the program record for best nine-game start to a season with an 8-1 mark that saw the Valiants outscore their opponents by a 34-14 margin. After the season, four Valiants were named to the All-Freedom Conference second team, the most All-Conference honorees since the program's first year in the conference in 2003. DeChent had a great first season with the team, ranking second in program history with 36 points as the first player in Valiant history to average more than two points per game. In 2010, Kelly nearly guided the Valiants to a winning record despite fielding a roster with just four upperclassmen and only one senior, posting a 9-10 overall mark. The most exciting game of the year came later at DeSales, when the Valiants tied the score late and Megan Greene tallied the game-winner with only five seconds left in overtime. Although no Valiants were named All-Conference, Kayla Meenan had one of the best statistical seasons in program history in 2010, as she ranked second on the school's single-season points list with 33 (11 goals, 11 assists). Manhattanville posted a 7-11 record in Kellys second season as head coach in 2009, providing a solid base for future successes. The teams potential was evident in the season-opening 6-3 win over Keystone College in which five of the teams six tallies came from freshmen. A trio of Valiants Jen Ascencio, Maura Bruen and Lauren Rutledge earned All-Conference honors from the Freedom Conference after the 2009 season, as all three players were named to the second team. In his first season as a collegiate head coach, Kelly guided the Valiants to a 6-12 record. The team faced a very difficult schedule that featured five nationally ranked opponents, falling to three of those teams by a single goal. In all, 10 of the Valiants' 18 matches in 2008 were decided by one goal, including five of the team's six wins. Kelly came to Manhattanville from Rye High School, where he served as the head coach of the varsity field hockey team for 30 years. He experienced unparalleled success at the school, posting a career record of 391-56-9 (.867), and built a resume that includes four New York State championships, five regional titles and nearly 20 league championships. Individually, Kelly was a three-time Section 1 Coach of the Year and in his final season was named the 2007 Journal News Coach of the Year. Kelly, whose Rye program was named the "Team of the Decade" by New York State, finished his high school career with the second-highest win total among active New York coaches.
