Dale Martin
Head Coach
Martin enters the fifth season of his second stint in Purchase and 11th season overall at the helm of the Manhattanville softball program in 2017. A four-time Conference Coach of the Year, Martin is one of the most successful coaches in Manhattanville history. He is the softball program's all-time leader in wins, games coached and winning percentage thanks to a 251-129-1 (.660) record, and is one of only seven coaches in department history to lead a team for more than 10 years. Martin led Manhattanville to a historical 2016 season, achieving multiple milestones on the way to a 41-5 overall record that ranked third in the country in winning percentage (.891). The team won its first 18 games of the season to garner the first NFCA national ranking in program history, moving all the way up to #19 by the end of the year. The top-seeded Valiants captured their second MAC Freedom Tournament championship in three years with three straight wins, and then advanced to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever after winning the Ewing, New Jersey Regional with two thrilling shutout victories over top-seeded TCNJ on the final day. Manhattanville was one of the top hitting teams in Division III all year, leading the country in home runs (67, eighth in D-III history), home runs per game (1.46/gm, 5th in D-III history) and slugging percentage (.636, seventh in D-III history). The team also set new program records in runs (369), hits (460), doubles (105), runs batted in (334), total bases (792), wins (41), shutouts (16) and games played (46) during the year, and did so with a very young lineup that regularly started four freshmen and seven underclassmen. As a result of the spectacular year, eight Valiants were named to the All-MAC Freedom first and second teams, marking the most by any MAC Freedom team in a single season since 2002. The honorees were led by sophomore Pitcher of the Year Alycia Feeney and the team's third straight Rookie of the Year, freshman Desiree Buboi. Feeney and Buboi were also two of Manhattanville's four NFCA All-Region honorees, as Buboi, Aarin Hartenstein and Alicia Marino doubled the program's number of first-team All-Region selections from three to six in just one year. Marino and Feeney also were named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, the first time in school history that two teammates earned the honor in the same year, while Marino was named the school's seventh CoSIDA Academic All-American. The team's 2016 success resulted in the second-largest single-season turnaround in Division III history after an injury-plagued 13-20 record in 2015 that saw five starters on the shelf by the end of the season. The Valiants still had a freshman earn NFCA All-East Region first-team and Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year honors for the second straight year in first baseman Alexis Ventarola, who also led three players recognized on the All-Freedom Conference teams. Martin also reached multiple milestones over the course of the year, earning his 200th win at Manhattanville on March 11 with a walkoff win over Emerson, and then picking up his 300th career victory the next day against Salve Regina. Martin performed perhaps his most masterful coaching job in 2014, guiding a Valiant squad comprising only 11 players to a 29-10 (13-1 Freedom) record and the program's first Freedom Conference championship. After going 2-6 in Florida, Manhattanville went 25-2 in its next 27 games to nearly sweep the Freedom Conference regular season and capture Martin's fourth conference title and fifth NCAA Tournament berth in eight years with the team. The Valiants also reached the first NCAA Tournament Regional final in program history as well, beating Penn State Berks and #24 William Paterson to reach the finals of the Salisbury, Maryland regional. The honors poured in for Manhattanville after the season, led by the program's first-ever NFCA All-American in freshman Shelbee Damianos, who led all NCAA freshmen in hitting in addition to earning Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year and All-Region first-team recognition. Senior Alyssa Taylor was also honored as Freedom Conference Player of the Year and an NFCA All-Region second-team selection. In addition, Kirsten Savage and Rosaria Callara were named to the All-Freedom first team and Dolores Diemicke was tabbed an All-Freedom second-team pick, while Martin earned his fourth conference Coach of the year honor. Martin set the stage for the 2014 resurgence in his first year back with Manhattanville in 2013, when he guided the team to a 22-19 record and a fourth straight berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament. After the season, the Valiants had four players named to the All-Freedom Conference teams and nabbed three first-team selections, including Freedom Player of the Year Jessica Van Galen. Van Galen was also named the ECAC South Region Player of the Year, an NFCA All-Region selection and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as well. Martin came back to Manhattanville after serving as head coach at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University from 2008-12, and during his tenure improved the teams record in all five seasons as head coach of the Knights. He set new single-season win totals in both of his last two seasons with the program, including a record 30-20 mark in 2012, and leaves the school as its all-time winningest coach as well, recording 92 wins in his five years. Martin previously had been the head coach of the Valiant softball program for six years from 2002-07. He led the program to unprecedented heights during his first tenure, posting the four highest single-season win totals at the school and guiding the team to three Skyline Conference Tournament championships and the only four NCAA Tournament appearances in program history up to that point. He concluded his run with a 47-game conference winning streak and topped the regular-season standings four times, including each of his final three years. He started his run at the school with a program-record 24 wins in 2002, sweeping the Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships to earn Skyline Coach of the Year honors for the first time. In the process, he earned the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the squad became only the second Valiant program ever to win an NCAA Tournament game. The team reached new heights again in 2005, posting a 30-11 record and sweeping through the Skyline Conference regular season and tournament without a single loss. The squad, which earned a second NCAA Tournament appearance, also included a program-record five NFCA All-Region selections and earned Martin his second conference Coach of the Year honor. Manhattanville continued its unbeaten run through the Skyline Conference in 2006 and 2007, earning two more NCAA Tournament berths. The Valiants had a program-record nine All-Conference honorees in both seasons, led by back-to-back Skyline Conference Player of the Year Michele Ribeiro. In those first six seasons, he registered a 146-75-1 (.658) record and produced 11 NFCA All-Region selections, four conference Players of the Year and 34 All-Conference honorees.
