Marist University Men's Soccer

Viggiano and the Red Foxes as he saw Krystian Witkowski close his decorated career as the school's first-ever MLS draftee when he was chosen by the Philadelphia Union in the Second Round of the Supplemental Draft. Freshman Matt Wendelken also became the first ever Marist athlete to represent the school on the U.S. level as he participated at the U.S. Under-20 National Team Camp. After two consecutive seasons of .500 soccer, the Red Foxes finished their 2011 campaign with a 8-7-5 record and an appearance in the MAAC Tournament semifinals. In addition to their continued maturation on the field, the Red Foxes have excelled in the classroom under Viggiano. The team received the NCAA public recognition award in 2008 and 2009, placing it in the top 10 percent of all men's soccer programs in the country. The squad has garnered two ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Awards from Chris Nacca and Joe Touloumis and has amassed 20 MAAC All-Academic Team selections. In 2009, Touloumis was named Marist's ninth Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA and the first men's soccer player to earn the award. In 2013, six Red Foxes were named to the MAAC All-Academic team: Matel Anasta, Steven Arraiano, Matty Berman, Connor Flatley, Connor Preece and MJ Stellwag. During the 2009 season Viggiano led the team to a new level of success. The Red Foxes were ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Atlantic Region during eight out of 10 weeks of the regular season, the most in program history. The team placed as high as third on the list after consecutive one-goal road wins at Army and Drexel. Marist began the 2009 season with a record of 3-0-1, the team's best start since 2003. Individually, three players garnered weekly awards from the MAAC on five occasions during the regular season. The Red Foxes' defense was able to keep them in the game each time out. Marist ranked third in the MAAC in shutouts (six), goals against average (1.24) and goals allowed (23, 1.28 per game). Against conference foes, the Red Foxes had individuals rank in the top two in points, points per game, goals, goals per game, and assists. Additionally, Viggiano's players led the league in game-winning goals and saves. In November 2006 Viggiano became just the third coach in Marist men's soccer history by replacing his mentor Bobby Herodes. Viggiano began his coaching career serving under Herodes and helped form the nucleus of the first Marist team to qualify for the NCAA tournament in 2000. His coaching experience includes two stints as an assistant at his alma mater (1998-99, and 2002-05) as well as stops as the head coach at Marywood University and SUNY Purchase and assistant positions at Iona and Elmira College. Viggiano earned a bachelor's degree in American Studies from Marist in 1999 and a master's degree in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 2003. The Mamaroneck, N.Y., native holds National and Advanced National diplomas from the NSCAA and has coached extensively at the club level in addition to his experience with the Olympic Development Program. Viggiano began his collegiate playing career at the University at Albany, where, as a freshman starter, he spearheaded the Great Danes to a national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Viggiano played for the Red Foxes from 1996-1998 and was a two-year starter and team captain. His playing experience includes stints in the Semi-Professional Cosmopolitan League as well as being an eight-time member of the Hudson Valley's men's soccer team at the Empire State Games. His squads have taken home two gold medals along with two silvers and two bronze. He currently resides in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., with his wife Elizabeth and daughters Maia and Shae. Biography  Matt Viggiano, '99 enters his 18th season as the head coach of the Red Foxes. He completed his 17th season at the helm the Red Foxes in 2023. Under his leadership, the 2021 team went 12-7-3 overall and 7-2-1 in the MAAC to earn the top seed in the MAAC Championships. The Red Foxes took down Manhattan, Monmouth, and Rider to win the MAAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. The 2021 title was the team's fourth MAAC Championship in school history. Offensively, finished 13th in the country and first in the MAAC in scoring offense with 1.89 goals per game, 21st in the nation and first in the MAAC in goals with 36, 22nd in the nation and first in the MAAC in points per game with 5.26 and 27th in the country and second in the MAAC in total points with 100. Ricky Cusano begins his 14th season as an Assistant Coach in 2018-19 after playing at Marist for four years and being a three-year starter at midfield/forward from 2001-2004. He was a MAAC All-Academic Team Selection in 2003 and 2004 while also being named MAAC Offensive Player of the week on September 14, 2003. He played in every game over his four years at Marist and finished his playing career with 4 goals and 6 assists.  Cusano led Marist in assists in his junior year 2003.  Cusano was a member of two Marist teams that made appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship game in 2002 and 2004. He was a starter and member of the 2004 team that won the MAAC Tournament Championship and went on to play UConn in the NCAA Tournament College Cup. After graduation in 2005, Cusano immediately joined the coaching staff.  He served as an Assistant Coach to the 2005 MAAC Tournament Championship team that went on to play St. John's in the NCAA Tournament College Cup.  Over the years, he has helped recruit and coach numerous All MAAC First, Second, and rookie team selections as well as many All MAAC Academic Team recipients during his time as an assistant to Coach Viggiano and Coach Herodes.   Prior to Marist, Cusano was a five-time New York State Cup Champion with the FC Westchester 84's in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. He also won two Region I Championships in 2000 and 2002, as well as a National Championship in 2000 with FC Westchester. Cusano attended North Rockland High School, where he was a four-year varsity starter. In his junior and senior years he earned All-League, All-Section, and All-County recognition. He is among the all-time leaders at North Rockland in career goals scored and career assists even though he missed his entire sophomore season due to injury. He also played and was a starter for the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 1998-2001.   In the summers of 2004 and 2005, Cusano won two open State Cup Championships with the New York Irish Rovers. He has also was worked with the LaGrange Soccer club winning two more state cup championships as a Head Coach in 2010 and 2011.  He currently trains youth teams in the Hyde Park soccer club and has joined the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program coaching staff.  He holds a USSF national coaching license.     Cusano earned his Bachelor's Degree in History with a Minor in Business and Minor in American Studies from Marist in 2005. He also earned a Master's of Business Administration with a Concentration in Executive Leadership from Marist in 2007. He is currently the Coordinator of Tutoring and teaches at Marist. He resides in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. with his wife Stefanie and son Anthony.

Rob Esposito currently assists Matt Viggiano in coaching the Marist Red Foxes, and also holds the title Technical Director at Quickstrike FC. As a student-athlete, Esposito played at Herkimer Community College from 2004-2006, where the team finished as national runners-up in 2004 and won a National Championship in 2005. Following his time at Herkimer, Esposito enrolled at SUNY Fredonia, playing from 2006-2008, when the team finished as SUNYAC runners-up in 2006 and conference champions in 2007. During his time at Fredonia, Esposito was named NSCAA All-Region twice and after graduation, played for the Westchester Flames of the PDL. Esposito began coaching in 2011 at Dutchess Community College, before he was hired as an assistant at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh from 2012-17, winning a conference championship during the 2013 season. Esposito holds a FAW C License.

Ricky Cusano is in his 17th season as an Assistant Coach at Marist College in 2021 after playing at Marist for four years and being a three-year starter at midfield/forward from 2001-2004. Rob Esposito joined the Marist men's soccer staff as an assistant coach in August 2017. Esposito joins the Red Foxes with a plethora of playing experiencing as a student-athlete at Herkimer Community College from 2004-2006, where the team finished as national runners-up in 2004 and won a National Championship in 2005. Following his time at Herkimer, Esposito enrolled at SUNY Fredonia, playing from 2006-2008, when the team finished as SUNY Athletic Conference runners-up in 2006 and conference champions in 2007. During his time at Fredonia, Esposito was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region twice and after graduation, played for the Westchester Flames of the Premier Development League. Esposito began coaching in 2011 at Dutchess Community College, before he was hired as an assistant at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh from 2012-17, winning a conference championship during the 2013 season. In addition to coaching the Knights, he also coached at the National Premier League's Soccer Plus Academy as holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
