Maggie Young

Head Coach

The Maryville University Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation announced Maggie Young as the inaugural head coach of the women’s field hockey program April 2021. She will spend the 2021-22 academic year recruiting Saints student-athletes. Maryville will officially begin NCAA Division II competition in the fall of 2022.   Young comes to the Saints after serving as the head coach of the girl’s field hockey team at nearby Whitfield School. She has guided Whitfield to the Sweet 16 of the Missouri State tournament 10 times in 11 seasons. Young recently recorded the 100th win of her high school coaching career.   Young was the recipient of the St. Louis Field Hockey Association Coach of the Year Award in 2018. Her Whitfield girl’s lacrosse squad earned the “Grow the Game – Spirit of the Game Award” in 2018 from the Missouri State Lacrosse Association.   Prior to Whitfield, she was the coach of the varsity and JV teams at Holland Hall High School in Tulsa, Okla. In 2008, she guided the team to the Southwest Preparatory Conference Division 2 championship. The next season, the team finished as the runner up, falling on a goal in overtime of the championship game. Young also was the USFHA Futures Site Director, coach and selector for the National Futures Tournament in Tulsa.   Young worked as an assistant field hockey coach at MICDS and helped the Rams reach the 2007 State Championship game. Off the field, she was the President of the St. Louis Field Hockey Association for eight years before stepping down in 2019, and also served as the Region 5 representative of the NFHS. Young is the St. Louis Field Hockey Association scholarship advisor for the Rob and Kathleen Durbin Memorial Scholarship which will be awarded starting in 2022. The award was named after her parents who passed away in 2019, and her mom is a graduate of Maryville.   Young is a graduate of Villa Duchesne High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in 2007. She and her husband, Michael Young, have three daughters ages five, seven and eight who all play field hockey for Gateway Club.   Student-athletes interesting in joining the Saints field hockey program should contact coach Young at [email protected] or (314) 540-4883.

Brad Smith

Head Coach

Brad Smith was named the new head men’s and women’s golf coach just prior to the start of the 2025-26 season. He came to the Saints after four seasons as the head men’s golf coach at Webster University.   During his four seasons at Webster, Smith led the Gorloks to two St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in 2022 and 2023 to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. He was twice voted the SLIAC Coach of the year (2022 and 2023) and oversaw 13 players earn All-Conference honors, and had 12 individuals earn All-Academic recognition. Smith guided Jan Antonin Wdowka to back-to-back SLIAC individual men’s golf championships in 2023 and 2024 as he picked up conference Men’s Golfer of the Year honors in two straight seasons.   Originally from Adelaide, Australia, Smith was a two-time NJCAA All-American at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. He won five individual titles during his time there, including the 2006 NJCAA Championship, where he tied the course and championship record with a 10-under-par 62 in the second round. Smith went on to win the championship in a playoff after tying the 72-hole scoring record with Brady Jones. Smith later transferred to Division I University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He was named Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in 2006-07 and earned First-Team All-Conference USA and Academic All-Conference USA honors as a senior in 2007-08. He also finished runner-up in the Conference USA Championship and won the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. As an amateur, Smith's playing highlights included a second-place finish in the 2004 Australian Amateur Strokeplay Championship. He was named to the All-Australian High School Golf Team in 2001 during his senior year at Scotch College. Smith competed as a touring professional golfer from 2008 to 2017, playing on tours such as the Asian, Australian, DP World, Korn Ferry, and Latin American Tours. In 2015, he served as the Director of Instruction at Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Georgia.   Smith serves as the U.S.-based Managing Partner for Fenix Apparel & Accessories, a custom apparel and accessories company headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand. Fenix, which has been expanding since its founding in 2008, specializing in private label polos, pullovers, and hoodies. Smith is also the co-founder of FLYT Golf, a Kansas City-based company specializing in golf training aids. His original invention, the FLYT Chipping Sleeve, helps golfers improve their chipping and pitching technique by reducing excessive hand and arm movement, promoting proper body rotation. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Management from UAB (2008) and an Associate of Arts from Indian Hills (2006). He resides with his wife Whitney and their two children, Bronson and Kennedy.

John Hogan

Head Coach

St. Louis native, John Hogan, was named the inaugural head coach for the Maryville Saints Men's Ice Hockey team in February 2018. He additionally assumed the Director of Hockey role over the summer of 2019 to oversee the entire program's day-to-day operations. Hogan has been instrumental in accelerating the growth of Saints’ Hockey. After just one season at the Men’s ACHA D2 level, Maryville fielded teams at the ACHA D1 and D2 levels for the 2019-2020 season. A women’s team joined the men’s teams in the 2020-2021 season. Starting in the fall of 2022, Maryville fielded five teams with a team in each ACHA division (M1, M2, M3, W1, W2). Hogan serves in the role of Director of Hockey as well as the head coach for the Men’s 1 team. As of 2023, the Men’s 1 team competes as an independent team within the ACHA M1 league with no conference affiliation. Before becoming the head coach at Maryville University, Hogan was an assistant coach with the University of Arizona’s ACHA M1 team. He additionally played three years for the Arizona M1 program before joining the coaching staff. As players, Hogan and his twin brother, Toppie, were instrumental in leading their team to the 2016 National Tournament. The goal is to build a perennial hockey program in the ACHA stemming from a culture of integral development. Athletic, academic, professional, and personal growth will all be focal points of a student athlete’s collegiate experience at Maryville University.”

Kevin Gregory

Coach

Kevin Gregory joined the Maryville Hockey coaching staff for the 2019-20 season after finishing his playing career as an assistant captain on the inaugural Saints hockey team in 2018-19. Gregory spent the 2019-20 season as the Head Men’s Ice Hockey Coach for Maryville’s ACHA M2 team and will be at the helm of the University’s newest ACHA Men’s 3 team in 2022-23. Before coming home and transferring to Maryville University, Gregory spent three years at the ACHA Division I level with Midland University (Nebraska). He also had a long junior hockey career in the NA3HL spending time with the Toledo Cherokee, Peoria Mustangs, St. Louis JR Blues, and the Cincinnati Swords. Coaching Philosophy: “The goal of coaching is to not only make the players better on the ice but also to help make them better people. Being a coach is about preparing your players to succeed in life away from the rink.”
