Mayville State University Men's Baseball

Berry runs one of the most outstanding college baseball programs in the nation. A member of four halls of fame and an active participant in local, regional, and national baseball organizations, Berry has kept Mayville State on the collegiate baseball map for more than three decades. In 36 years since becoming the Comets head coach in 1982, Berry's teams have won 23 regular season conference championships (including 17 in a row from 1986-2002), 21 conference tournament championships, and have made 27 appearances in the NAIA national playoffs.   The Mayville State University Comets have won three NAIA regional titles under Scott Berry, won the 2002 Plains Super Regional title, and finished in 5 th  place at the NAIA World Series in 2002.   Coach Berrys career record as head coach after 35 years in the NAIA stands at 1,012-573-1, which is good for a winning percentage of 0.638 even though over 75% of all MSU baseball games have been played on the road. Coach Berry is the sixth active winningest coach in the NAIA, and all of his wins have come as the head coach of the Mayville State University Comets.   Coach Berry has been named as Conference Coach of the Year 23 times, District 12 Coach of the Year 9 times, NAIA Region Coach of the Year 4 times.  The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) is set to induct Coach Berry into its Hall of Fame in 2017. The induction ceremony will take place on January 6, 2017 in Anaheim, CA.  Coach Berry has coached 42 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 25 NAIA All-Americans, and 22 players who have signed professional contracts. Berry has a tradition-rich background in the game of baseball. Growing up in LaMoure, N.D., Berry participated on American Legion teams in LaMoure that won one State B Championship in 1970 and finished as Runner-Up in the State Regional playoffs three times. After graduating high school, Berry went to Mayville State University to play for the Comets and their legendary coach, Al Meyer. He lettered four years and received all-conference honors his junior and senior seasons. After graduating from Mayville State, Berry coached baseball teams in Ellendale, Binford, Rolla and Casselton, N.D. He returned to his alma mater as an assistant baseball coach for Al Meyer in 1981 and became the head coach for the 1982 season. Scott also coached the summer amateur baseball team in Mayville when his Red Caps were in the state finals six out of seven years, coming away with championships in 1981 and 1984. A very active participant in local, state, and national baseball organizations, Berry has served or is currently serving as an officer or committee chairperson in the North Dakota Baseball Coaches Association, North Dakota Amateur Baseball Coaches Association, North Dakota College Athletic Conference, USA Baseball, American Baseball Coaches Association, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In 1992, Berry represented USA Baseball as a task force member responsible for administering the National Junior Baseball Championships in Boise, Idaho. In August 1992, Scott began an eight-year stint as an officer for the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association and served as president in 2000. Berry served as first vice president for the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the largest baseball coaches association in the world, and became president of the organization in January of 2014. Berry now serves as an ABCA Membership Committee Chair.   In 1996, Berry was honored by his alma mater with his induction into the Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1998, the North Dakota Associated Press Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association honored Berry with the Special Achievement Award. In 1999, Berry was recognized by his NAIA Great Plains Region coaching peers as being the Great Plains Region Coach of the Year. In 2001, Berry was named Region 3 Coach of the year. The NAIA awarded Berry with its highest honor by inducting him into the NAIA Hall of Fame for Baseball in 2002. In 2003, Berry was named to his third hall of fame by being inducted into the North Dakota Amateur Baseball Association Hall of Fame. In 2009, Berry was inducted into the Christian Sports Commission Hall of Fame; his fourth Hall of Fame award in his tenure at Mayville State.    In 2010 the baseball field at Mayville State University was named in his honor. In 2010 Berry received the NAIA Robert E. Smith Achievement Award. This award is presented to an NAIA coach or administrator who has demonstrated unselfish promotion of NAIA baseball. In 2011 Berry was awarded the FCA Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award. This award is presented annually to the college or high school baseball coach who best exemplifies the Christian principles of character, integrity, excellence, teamwork, and service on and off the baseball field.

Billy Tomblin is entering his 3rd season as head baseball coach for the Comets and his second as assistant athletic director for Comet Athletics. Tomblin was previously Mayville State's assistant baseball coach for 9 years. He also played 2 seasons under head coach, Scott Berry, where his team would win back to back DAC Championships and he would get All-Conference honors behind the plate.  2024-25 Season: The Comets finish 5th overall in their last season in the NSAA. Tomblin had four all-conference recipients. Chris Shopbell & Carson Lundmark were named First Team, Garret Lundmark was named Second Team and Jack McQueen was named Honorable Mention. Shopbell was also 5th in the conference overall with a .379 batting average. The team was 7th overall in hitting statistics.  2023-24 Season: The Comets finished 7th overall in the NSAA. Tomblin had 3 all-conference recipients. Chris Shopbell & Riley Rankin were both named First Team, Carson Lundmark & Gunner Thompson were both named Honorable Mention. Senior, Marcus Hughes, was 5th in stolen bases in the conference with 19. The team was 4th in the conference in fielding % with .951. Tomblin also had 9 Daktronic NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes. Since joining the staff in the spring of 2013, Tomblin has worked to make an impact in the program in numerous ways.  Previous to Spring of 2013, Tomblin was a Graduate Assistant with the Mayville State University football program, working as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator since the fall of 2012.  He continued in those roles, doubling up coaching both sports until 2017, when he made the move to being a full time baseball coach.   Tomblin has been active in the summers. He was the former head coach of the Badlands Big Sticks (Dickinson, ND) of the Northwoods League. In his first year at the helm, Tomblin led the team to a Lewis Division Championship. He was with the Big Sticks for 2 seasons. Previous to the Big Sticks, in the summer of 2016, Tomblin got his first head coaching gig and was named the head coach of the Titustown Titans of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League, a college summer league out of Norfolk, Virginia. The Titans had a rollercoaster type summer, struggling to find their groove until they went on a run in the playoffs and won the league championship. An active member in the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association), speaking at the South Dakota State Barnstormers Clinic in August of 2017. In 2023 he was named the ABCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.   Tomblin is a Fremont, California native and attended Irvington High School.  After high school Tomblin attended Ohlone Junior College and Chabot Junior College before being recruited by Scott Berry and playing on two consecutive DAC Championship teams and receiving All-Conference honors behind the plate. Tomblin completed his B.S. degree in Fitness and Wellness with a minor in Coaching from Mayville State University in 2012 and was named HPER Major of the Year.  He then completed his M.S. degree in Leadership in Physical Education and Sport at North Dakota State University in 2014. Tomblin resides in Mayville with his wife Ashley and their two boys, Billy and Cayson.
