Biography A cornerstone of McMurry University Baseball for over two decades, Josh Lee has guided the War Hawks to historic success as Head Baseball Coach, establishing the program as a rising national power in NCAA Division III. Since assuming the head role in 2022, Lee has built a culture defined by discipline, player development, academic excellence, and competitive consistency that has elevated McMurry into one of the most respected programs in the American Southwest and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conferences. The 2025 season marked the most accomplished campaign in McMurry Baseball history. Under Lee’s leadership, the War Hawks posted a 35–13 record, captured the program’s first NCAA Division III Regional Championship with a victory over Pomona-Pitzer College in the La Verne (CA) Regional, and advanced to the program’s first-ever Super Regional appearance versus Trinity University. The War Hawks also reached a #16 national ranking, the first in school history, and finished #41 in the official NCAA NPI standings entering postseason play. Lee’s overall record as head coach stands at 70–60, reflecting rapid growth and sustained program momentum. During his tenure, Lee has coached 33 All-Conference selections, including 8 First Team All-Conference, 5 All-Region, 1 All-American, and 1 All-Region 10 Defensive Team member. The 2025 season also produced two major conference award winners — SCAC Player of the Year Michael Smosna and SCAC Freshman of the Year Collin Bruning — highlighting McMurry’s continued rise in individual player development and conference recognition. In the classroom, Lee’s program earned the 2025 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, recognizing McMurry Baseball for maintaining one of the highest collective GPAs in the nation during its championship season. Coaching and Leadership Experience Lee first joined the McMurry coaching staff in 2007 as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, helping guide the 2008 team to an American Southwest Conference Championship. He returned to McMurry in 2019 and took over as head coach in 2022, implementing a comprehensive development system that emphasizes both physical performance and mental toughness. His leadership has fostered a renewed sense of tradition and community within the program, strengthening alumni relations and enhancing the student-athlete experience. Beyond the collegiate level, Lee is the Founder and Owner of both the San Antonio Angels and West Texas Angels Baseball Programs, two of the most prominent amateur baseball organizations in Texas. Since their inception, the Angels programs have grown to 400+ active athletes and produced more than 175 collegiate baseball players, consistently ranking among the Top 15 programs in Texas. Lee’s coaching experience also includes time as an Assistant Coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and as General Manager and Owner of D-BAT Abilene, where he managed operations for one of the region’s premier training facilities. Playing Career A McMurry Baseball Hall of Honor inductee, All-Quarter Century Team, and All-Century Team Lee starred for the War Hawks from 2001–2004, cementing one of the most decorated playing careers in school history. His excellence on and off the field led to induction into the McMurry University Athletics Hall of Honor as both an individual (2021) and a member of the 2001 and 2008 ASC Championship Teams. Mike Gonzales
Assistant Coach
Mike Gonzales joined the McMurry Baseball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant during the 2021-2022 athletic season, following graduation from McMurry in 2021. Gonzales was a five-year player for the program, enjoying two years of all-conference honors. He ranks among the top players all-time in career batting average (.340), games played (123), at-bats (420), runs scored (78), hits (143), doubles (29), total bases (193), walks (40) and slugging percentage (.459). Gonzales aided McMurry in winning the 2022 American Southwest Conference Co-Coaching Staff of the Year award. McMurry enjoyed a historic 15-win improvement with a 24-18 record and a fourth place finish in the conference, despite being picked to finish 11th. One of two players to start every game, roaming center field all season ... Led the team in batting average (.366), hits (48), at-bats (131), stolen bases (4-5) and on-base percentage (.421) ... Tied team-highs doubles (6) and runs (25) ... One of five players on the team to hit a triple ... Batted 12-for-21 in a five-game win streak en-route to ASC Hitter of the Week honors, hitting a triple, two homers, scoring 10 runs and driving home six more ... He had four multi-hit games in the five-game stretch while scoring at least once in all five games ... Went 2-for-2 against Schreiner with a two-RBI single, a solo homer and a pair of walks in a 12-11 win ... Won the War Hawk of the Year Award for McMurry Baseball and was one of five scholar-athletes up for the Bill Libby Award (Top Overall Male Athlete). 2020 (Senior): Started the first two games of the season before sustaining a season-ending injury ... Boardman Adams
Assistant Coach
Biography Since joining the McMurry University baseball coaching staff, Boardman Adams has emerged as one of the region’s young pitching minds and recruiters, helping elevate the War Hawks’ pitching development and recruiting pipelines to new heights. Serving as both Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, Adams plays an instrumental role in the program’s continued rise within NCAA Division III baseball. A specialist in pitcher development, Adams has implemented advanced data-driven training systems utilizing Rapsodo and YakkerTech technology, daily pitching protocols, and individualized development plans to maximize performance across the War Hawks’ pitching staff. In his tenure, McMurry pitchers have earned 14 All-Conference selections, including All-Region and All-Defensive Region 10 honors for standout right-hander Hunter Poe (2025). His pitchers played a big part in McMurry’s historic 2025 campaign, which culminated in a 35–13 record, a #16 national ranking, and the program’s first NCAA Regional Championship. As Recruiting Coordinator, Adams oversees McMurry’s recruiting strategy and national player database, helping identify and attract high-character, high-talent student-athletes who align with the War Hawk standard. His organizational systems, evaluation tools, and personal relationships across the country have helped solidify McMurry’s reputation as a growing destination for elite Division III talent. Summer Coaching Experience Outside of McMurry, Adams has built an extensive summer-league résumé developing elite collegiate players across some of the nation’s top developmental circuits. He served as Pitching Coach for the St. Cloud Rox in the prestigious Northwoods League (2019), where the team finished among league leaders in strikeouts (564) and opponent batting average (.224), producing multiple All-NWL selections and professional signees, including players who went on to the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets. He also coached with the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas Collegiate League (2020), contributing to the Bombers’ TCL Championship season (22–11) while mentoring future professional pitchers such as Bryce Miller (Seattle Mariners), Chandler Jozwiak (Miami Marlins), Dustin Saenz (Washington Nationals), and Will Johnston (Oakland Athletics). Earlier in his career, Adams served as Head Coach and General Manager for the Conway Cadets in the Beach Collegiate Baseball League (BCBL), winning back-to-back league championships (2017 & 2018) and earning BCBL Coach of the Year honors in 2017. His teams produced more than 20 All-BCBL players while leading the league in pitching across multiple seasons. Reed Hodges
Assistant Coach
Biography Former McMurry standout catcher and All-Region selection Reed Hodges returned to his alma mater as a member of the War Hawks baseball coaching staff, bringing with him a strong background in player development, program operations, and athlete performance training. Hodges joined the McMurry staff after establishing himself within the Central Texas baseball community as a Head Coach and Assistant Director of Baseball Operations for Marucci Elite Texas. In that role, he oversaw program logistics, developed team practice plans, managed player registration and communication, and led on-field instruction across multiple age levels. His leadership in that program was marked by his emphasis on detailed player development and consistency in team culture. In addition to his work with Marucci Elite, Hodges has served as Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning and Lead Catching Instructor for Nuclear Baseball Training in Leander, Texas, where he directed offseason training programs and helped athletes prepare for collegiate-level competition. He also spent multiple summers working in the Tejas Collegiate Baseball League, where he coordinated team data collection, handled in-game management, and produced digital media content for player exposure. Prior to his return to McMurry, Hodges also gained experience at the high school level as an Assistant Coach at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (Austin, TX) and as Associate Director and Head Coach for Dirtbags Baseball, guiding team operations, practice structures, and player evaluations. Playing Career A four-year member of the McMurry University baseball program (2018–2022), Hodges was one of the most decorated catchers in program history. He was named First Team All-Conference (ASC) and Second Team All-Region (D3baseball.com) in 2022 while also earning multiple Academic All-Conference and Dean’s List honors. Known for his leadership, defensive skillset, and knowledge of the game, Hodges helped set the foundation for McMurry’s continued success behind the plate.
