Gentry Johnson
Head Coach
Gentry Johnson was named Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Millsaps College in August 2023. Since his appointment, Johnson has led the Majors to marked improvement and competitive success. Under his direction, the program has achieved several statistical milestones. i In his second season, Millsaps recorded its highest win total since 2019 including the fewest goals conceded since 2017 and the most goals scored since 2019. During Gentry's third campaign in 2025the Majors netted 33 goals — their most in a single season since 2016. Johnson brings a wealth of coaching experience across collegiate, semi-professional, and youth levels throughout the state of Mississippi. Before joining Millsaps, he served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Holmes Community College from 2020 to 2022. During his tenure, the Holmes women’s team captured back-to-back MACCC Tournament Championships and advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Final in both 2021 and 2023. Beyond the collegiate ranks, Johnson has contributed to the growth of the game at the semi-professional level, serving as head coach of the U23 Mississippi Blues SC in 2021 and as an assistant coach with Gaffa FC in 2020, both members of the Gulf Coast Premier League. At the youth level, Johnson has been the Director of Player Development for Rankin Soccer Club since 2018, overseeing several teams that have achieved success on the regional and national stages. Under his leadership in 2025, the U19 (’06/’07) and U16 (’09) girls secured ECNL-RL Central Championships. In addition the 2009 and 2007 girls’ teams earned USYS National and Regional Finalist honors in 2023, while the 2005 boys captured the USYS Midsouth Championship. In recognition of his accomplishments, Johnson was named the 2023 Mississippi Soccer Association Female Competitive Coach of the Year and the 2022 MSA Male Competitive Coach of the Year. He currently holds a USSF A-Youth License and is completing his USSF A-Senior License. A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, Johnson began his coaching career with the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club, one of North Carolina’s premier ECNL programs, where he spent seven years (2011–2018) developing elite-level players. As a student-athlete, Johnson played collegiately at Francis Marion University and Cape Fear Community College, where he served as team captain, before completing his playing career at Greensboro College (2009–2013). He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Stephen Roberson
Assistant Coach
Stephen Roberson joined the Millsaps men’s soccer staff in the summer of 2023 as an assistant coach. He was born in Madison, Miss., where he attended Madison Central High School. In 2011, Roberson was named Mr. Mississippi for soccer and was a part of the Region lll for years. After graduating from Madison Central, Roberson attended the University of Tulsa where he played soccer for three years. Roberson then embarked to Mississippi where he finished his college career at Mississippi College. The Mississippi native continued playing soccer for four years with the Mississippi Brillia. In 2022, Roberson finished his playing career with Gaffa FC. Roberson began his coaching career for the Mississippi Rush and instructed at Ridgeland High School, where he coached for four years. He currently lives in Ridgeland, Miss. with his family.

Michael Azzarone
Assistant Coach
Azzarone joins the Millsaps College men's soccer program as an assist coach after spending one season as an assistant coach for Wachusett United FC, a premier youth soccer club in the Central Massachusetts region. He brings a thinking approach geared toward solutions that counter an opposing team’s strategy at game time. He possesses a deep understanding of data driven and qualitative analysis, and is able to find players that align with the team’s and school’s culture. He will also use his knowledge to analyze player profiles and communicate a comprehensive player recruitment strategy. Azzarone began his soccer coaching career at Wachusett United FC, where he helped develop players technically, physically, and mentally under the head coach's philosophy. He also ensured that sessions ran smoothly and that players were constantly engaged. In August 2025, Azzarone became a Sports Analytics intern at Anna Maria College Athletics in Paxton, Massachusetts. His main tasks included tracking and organizing the statistics for games during the Fall and Winter sports. Azzarone also reviewed game footage and picked out key points for the school's teams. He spent two seasons playing for NCAA Division III Anna Maria College as a forward and defender. In the summer of 2025, Azzarone was a Soccer Shots coach, where he started off as an assistant coach before being promoted to lead coach. There he oversaw the develop of youth players. From August 2018 to December 2024, Azzarone was a referee for the New Jersey Referee Association, where he was assigned as either an assistant referee or center referee for area games. Azzarone made sure he ensured a safe, productive, and safe environment for all players. He completed his bachelor's degree in Data Analytics from Anna Maria College in December 2025, achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. While at Anna Maria College, he also was a member the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a student ambassador. He was involved with the Jersey Shore Boca and Lacey Soccer Clubs. Azzarone intends to pursue his master's degree at Millsaps College, while managing the men's soccer program as an assistant coach.
