Assistant Coach

King began at Minnesota State in August of 2024 as an assistant athletic trainer and worked with track and field, cross country and swimming and diving teams. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in health science from the College of St. Scholastica in 2023 and earned a master's of science in athletic training in 2024. While in graduate school, King worked with the athletic teams at St. Scholastica, UW-Superior, Minnesota Duluth, Denfeld High School, Waseca High School and Bethany Lutheran College. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association. She has a BOC certification and Minnesota state license. She completed her CPR/AED for professional rescuers certification with the American Red Cross.

Marc Harwood

Assistant Coach

Harwood served as an assistant coach for Bloomsburg (Pa.) in 2012-13 before joining the Mavericks. Harwood, who after spent two seasons as a wrestling instructor for Edge MMA and Fitness in Denver (Colo.) before his one-year stint at Bloomsburg, graduated with a degree in Fine Arts with Emphasis in Graphic Design and minors in Art History and Communication from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, Neb., in 2007.  Harwood, who wrestled for the Huskers and qualified for NCAA Division I championships, was a member of the UNL team that placed third at National Duals.  He also placed multiple times at FILA and University Nationals in Freestyle and Greco.   Prior to working in Colorado, Harwood served as an assistant coach at Jackson County Central High School in Lakefield, Minn., where he helped lead the Huskies to a second straight state wrestling team championship. He also coached several individuals that went on to wrestle at the NCAA Division I level.  He served as the head wrestling coach at Emmetsburg High School in Emmetsburg, Iowa where he helped the team qualify for Iowa State High School Team Tournament for the first time in five years and was named conference coach of the year. He also coached several wrestlers that placed at the Iowa State High School Tournament and went on to compete collegiately.   The Lakefield, Minn., native was a four-time Minnesota All-State high school wrestler for Jackson County Central (Minn.).  A two-time state individual champion going 42-0 in both his junior and senior years, Harwood helped lead his team to back-to-back state titles. The owner of a career record of 192 25 as a prep, he earned academic all-state honors his senior year and was a three-year member of the Minnesota Storm Junior National Freestyle Wrestling Team.  Harwood lettered five times in wrestling and two times in football, earning defensive MVP honors while helping to lead JCC to a Minnesota state high school grid title in 2001. Trayton Anderson

Assistant Coach

Anderson joined the Minnesota State coaching staff in 2024-25 after four years of collegiate wrestling between 2019-24. Anderson spent his first three seasons competing at South Dakota State University, where he was a two-year starter and a two-time Big 12 Academic All-American at 133 pounds. Anderson joined the Minnesota State wrestling team for his final collegiate year of competition and he compiled a record of 28-9 with 11 victories by fall and six by tech fall at 141 pounds. Anderson ended his career ranked No. 16 in the country. In his first season of coaching, he helped the Mavericks finish 8-5 overall in duals with two individual All-Americans.  A native of Farmington, Minnesota, Anderson was a four-time state place winner, including two state finals appearances and a state championship in 2019 finishing that season with a 54-1 record. Anderson went 159-23 in high school meets and competed heavily on the national level, which included being a four-time Minnesota junior duals national team member and an All-American sixth place finish at Cadet Nationals in 2017. Anderson obtained his bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Minnesota State University in 2024.

Matt Blome

Blome is in his first season as Assistant Coach for Minnesota State wrestling in 2025-26. He wrestled in college for Minnesota State, where he achieved a career record of 64-32, was a two-time NCAA Division II National qualifier and earned All-American honors in 2017 with an eighth place finish at the NCAA National Championships. Prior to Minnesota State, Blome went 160-28 in high school, including 93 wins by fall and made a pair of WIAA Division II State Tournament appearances, finishing runner-up in 2015 and State Champion in 2016.

Jim Makovsky

Coach

The head coach of the Mavericks since 1993-94, Jim Makovsky enters the 2025-26 season for his 33rd season at the helm. Makovsky has constructed a 313-145-3 record with Minnesota State. His overall career record sits at 336-164-4 (Makovsky also coached at Valley City State for four years prior to MSU where he posted a 23-19-1 record). A Wahpeton, N.D., native, Makovsky graduated from Valley City State in 1989 before earning his Master’s Degree in 1996 at MSU. Makovsky reached the 100-win plateau with the Mavericks during the 1998-99 campaign with a 39-10 victory over Southwest Minnesota State. The 200th overall win of his career during came during the course of the 2007-08 season, and notched his 200th win as the head coach of the Mavericks in 2008-09.  He reached the 300-win plateau on Jan. 31st, 2019 when the Mavericks registered a 22-18 home win over the University of Mary. His 300th win as Maverick head coach came in 2023-24 with a 50-0 victory over Arizona Christian University (Dec. 16) in Peoria, Arizona. Makovsky guided the Mavericks to a 7-6 overall record in 2023-24, including a 3-2 record at Taylor Center in Mankato. The Mavericks improved to 8-5 in 2024-25 duals (including 5-4 in NSIC competition) and sent three wrrestlers to the NCAA Championships, including All-Americans Caleb Meunier and Drake Hayward. Makovsky and the Mavericks have been one of the most successful programs at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Dual Championships with Minnesota State posting a seventh-place finish at the event in 2011 after back-to-back third-place finishes in 2010 and 2009. MSU won the tournament in 2008 and prior to that finished no worse than fifth as they were fourth in 2007, second in 2006, and fifth in 2005. Along with coaching 12 national champions and 97 NCAA II All-Americans, Makovsky has been named conference Coach of the Year three times (2007-09) and coached two conference championship teams (2007 North Central Conference champions, 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champions). He was named NCAA DII Region Coach of the Year in 2019. Makovsky has helped lead the Mavericks to 15 top-eight NCAA II national finishes while also winning three consecutive NCAA DII Super Region Three championships from 2007-09. Including a pair of second-place finishes in 1993-93 and 2007-08, Makovsky has guided the Mavericks to 18 top-ten finishes at the NCAA Division tournament. Under his tutelage, Makovsky has coached many successful individuals with the Mavericks including two-time heavyweight national champion Troy Kenning, three-time All-American and national champion Troy Szydel, four-time All-American and national champion Matt Petsinger, three-time All-American and national champion Andy Pickar, four-time All-American and national champion Jason Rhoten, along with Trevor Turriff and Darrell Mason, who both captured national championships in 2022. Inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2013 and a 2008 North Central Conference Legacy Award recipient, Makovsky has served on the National Wrestling Coaches Association board of directors since 2003 and also served a stint as president of the organization. Makovsky was selected as the honorary coach for the 2009 NCAA I All-Star Meet at the Ohio State University and in 2019 he was named the 2019 NWCA NCAA DII Super Region V Coach of the Year. Makovsky played an instrumental role in Minnesota State securing and hosting the 2004 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships and planning and designing the 4,000 square-foot Rummy Macias Wrestling Room.
