Brock Ellingson
Head Coach
Brock Ellingson is in his fourth season as MSUM's head women's golf coach. He was hired in June of 2023 following a successful tenure at Fargo Shanley High School. In his third season, Ellingson continued to level up the Dragon women's golf program. The Dragons were again led by senior Halle Balluff, who recorded a season stroke average of 83.8. On March 13 at the SMSU Challenge, Balluff tied the 18-hole school record (held by teammate Aspen Beyer) after carding a second-round 74. By season's end, Ellingson's outfit had secured a new school record for 18-hole team scoring average (355.1). At the NSIC Championships, Moorhead placed 12th as a team, shooting a 54-hole school record score of 1,066. Ellingson's second season saw MSUM finish 12th overall at the NSIC Golf Championships. Stellar individual performances continued to occur for the Dragons. This was headlined by true freshman Aspen Beyer resetting the school record for an 18-hole low round. Beyer carded a 74 in the second round of the EverSpring Inn & Suites Mustang Invitational on September 29. It is the second straight season where a Dragon has reset the 18-hole low round record. In his first season at the helm, MSUM would finish 12th at the NSIC Golf Championships. However, Ellingson's tutelage proved to be successful as he helped sophomore Halle Balluff to multiple school records during the season. Balluff reset the 18-hole and 36-hole school records at the Watkins Invitational on September 25 and 26. "I am thrilled and honored to accept the position of women's golf head coach at my alma mater, Minnesota State University Moorhead," Ellingson said. "It's a dream opportunity to lead and inspire these athletes." Ellingson is a Dragon graduate, having earned his degree in physical education in 2020. He had spent the last seven seasons coaching golf at the high school level, first at Fargo Davies High School for two seasons. After his work at Davies, Ellingson began his time at Fargo Shanley where he was an assistant for both the boys' and girls' programs. On the boy's side, Ellingson spent a season under legendary head coach Don Johnson before moving into the head coach role, having been at the helm of the Deacon program for four seasons. "Brock has an internal drive that is contagious. I am excited for the future of our golf team," said MSUM athletic director Chad Markuson. "His passion for the game of golf and the student-athlete experience convinced me that he is the right coach for the Dragons." Ellingson has also been the head girls' assistant coach at Shanley under Shari McTaggart for the last four seasons. He helped the Deacons to a state title in 2020, a team that included current Dragon Halle Balluff. During the 2022-23 season, Ellingson helped Shanley's Lindsey Astrup to a seventh-place finish in the state meet in October 2022. The Shanley girls finished ninth as a team at the state tournament. On the boy's side, Ellingson guided junior Zach Skarperud to a runner-up finish at the Class A Boys Golf State Tournament. Ellingson is also the Eastern Tournament Director for the Dakota Junior Golf Association. He has been active in local junior golf scene for years and has a passion that is hard to match for the game of golf.
