Karin Harvey

Head Coach

Harveys teams have achieved. Since the start of the 2012-2013 campaign, Montclair State has put together an 88-6 record, a .936 winning percentage. In addition the Red Hawks have been ranked in the Top 10 of both major Division III national polls as well as picking up numerous individual and team honors. MSU has been just as dominant in the New Jersey Athletic Conference claiming the league title the last three years winning 50 of 52 conference contests. As the 2015-16 season begins, Harvey has compiled a Montclair State record of 174-56 and is the all-time winningest coach, a spot she took over last season. Harveys record in the NJAC is even better at 93-24, a .795 winning percentage. Montclair State has reached the NJAC semifinals in each of Harveys first nine seasons. Also during that time the Red Hawks have had 19 players named to the All-NJAC Team as well as claiming numerous Regional and All-American honors. Harvey herself has also picked up awards as Coach of the Year on the conference, regional and national levels. Last year Harvey led Montclair State to the finest season in the 46-year history of the womens basketball program. The 2014-15 Red Hawks finished third at the NCAA Division III Final Four. MSU concluded its season 31-2 setting a single-season mark for victories in addition to capturing its third consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference title. Montclair spent the entire season ranked in both the USA Today Sports / Division III and D3Hoops.com Top 25 polls and finished the year No. 3 in both. It was a magical run for Harvey, who became the all-time winningest coach in program history. She surpassed Maureen Wendelken for the top spot with her 153 victory in the Red Hawks win over Marymount University in December and guided Montclair to its third consecutive NJAC title as it became the first conference team to win three straight league titles in 16 years. Montclair State made its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and hosted the first four rounds. The Red Hawks used the friendly confines of the Panzer Athletic Center to help send their coach back to her native Michigan as MSU advanced to the Division III national semifinals for the first time. In Grand Rapids, Montclair State fell to George Fox but bounced back the next day to beat Tufts University for its third-place finish. For the second time in three years, Harvey took home several pieces of hardware for coaching excellence. She was named the NJAC Coach of the Year for the third time and was honored by the Metropolitan Writers as the Division III Coach of the Year. Harvey was tabbed as the WBCA District Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Pat Summitt Trophy presented to the United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year. In 2014 Harveys team faced very lofty expectations following one of the greatest seasons in program history, yet it managed to surpass those with a 28-3 record, a second straight NJAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament Elite 8 for the first time in program history. Once again the Red Hawks dominated the NJAC with a 17-1 mark, the most league wins by MSU since 1990.  Montclair added another first time to its resume hosting the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Panzer Athletic Center. The Red Hawks used that home-court advantage to advance to the NCAA Sectional Tournament for the second time in as many years and went one round further than the previous season reaching the national quarterfinal. Harvey, who was named the Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by D3Hoops.com and District 2 Regional Coach of the Year by the WBCA, moved past Jill Jeffrey into second place on the all-time wins list at Montclair State with her 131 victory the teams 69-39 triumph over Rutgers-Newark. Three years ago, Harvey accomplished something that very few coaches in Montclair State athletic history, let alone in the womens basketball program, have ever done. The 2012-13 Red Hawks put their name among the elite teams in school history as MSU went 29-1, captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship for the first time 18 years and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in history. Harveys team won its first 29 games of the season setting the record for the longest winning streak in school athletic history and became just the second womens basketball team and ninth team at MSU overall to record an unbeaten regular season going 25-0, 16-0 in the always-difficult NJAC becoming only the third conference team to do that in 13 years. MSU set school records for most victories, longest winning streak and tied the New Jersey State records for womens collegiate basketball for winning percentage (.967) and winning streak (29 games).  In addition Montclair State was ranked in the USA Today Sports/WBCA Division III Top 25 for all but three weeks of the season and reaching as high as No. 7 following its first conference title and NCAA appearance since the 1994-95 campaign. Harvey collected plenty of accolades along the way starting with the NJAC Coach of the Year honor which she won for the second time in her career. She was also named the Division III Coach of the Year by the Metropolitan Writers Association and honored among the best in the nation as the WBCA District 2 Coach of the Year. Harvey also passed a few milestones along the wonderful journey of that season as well. She earned her 100th career coaching victory in the Red Hawks season-opening win over Salisbury in the Gwynedd-Mercy Tip-Off Tournament and two months later became the fourth coach in MSU womens basketball history to record 100 wins joining Wendelken (1975-1983), Jill Jeffrey (1984-1991) and Gloria Bradley (1993-2000) as the only coaches to reach that mark. Harvey is no stranger to Montclair State basketball having served two seasons as an assistant with the Red Hawks, including the 2005-06 campaign during which Montclair posted an 18-10 overall mark and finished second in the NJAC, the best league finish by MSU since 1999. In addition to her coaching duties, Harvey served as the recruiting coordinator, handled all scouting operations and oversaw community outreach and fundraising efforts.  As the Red Hawks recruiting coordinator she was responsible for bringing in two very talented incoming classes. The following season, Harvey moved on to her first collegiate head coaching position at Drew University where she led the Rangers to the most successful season in program history with conference and ECAC playoff semifinal appearances.  The 2006-07 Drew team set a school record for conference wins and under Harvey's tutelage. Courtney Cunningham was named a WBCA/Kodak National All-American and Melissa Kraft became the first Rangers to be named to the All-Conference first team for three consecutive seasons.  In 2007, Harvey returned to the Montclair State campus and led the Red Hawks to an 18-8 mark and the first of its five trips to the NJAC Tournament semifinals. The following year was one of MSUs best in recent history as it went 18-8 and won the NJAC North Division title with an 11-2 mark as Harvey earned NJAC Coach of the Year honors.    In addition to her basketball tenure at Montclair State, Harvey was also the head volleyball coach for two seasons and assisted with the Red Hawks womens lacrosse program in 2006. On the volleyball court, Harvey revitalized the program and turning it into a NJAC contender with the infusion of 13 new players in two years and had two players selected to the NJAC All-Conference Team, the first multiple selections for MSU since 2000. Prior to Montclair State, Harvey had been successful on the high school and collegiate levels.  She spent two years at the Connelly of the Holy Child where she helped the team to a 15-6 mark and its first basketball banner in seven years.  In 1997, at Northampton High School, Harvey made Massachusetts state history as she became the first female coach of a boys high school team as the assistant varsity and freshman coach. Harvey spent two seasons at Smith College where she earned her masters degree in Exercise and Sports Studies in 2000.  While at Smith, Harvey was responsible for several aspects of the program, including scouting, recruiting and team administration.  In addition to Harveys extensive coaching experience, she was the junior varsity coach for the Deerfield (MI) High School girls team and also spent time coaching with her alma mater Aquinas College. She spent two seasons with the womens team at Aquinas and earned herself the Athletic Management Award.  Harvey also served as an assistant coach on the Zag USA Team that earned a bronze medal at the Eastern University Games in July, 2005.   2007-Present 196-63 (.757) 108-27
