Head Coach

Nash's tenure as head coach of the Mustangs' track & field and cross country teams. During that time the Mustangs have made significant competitive strides at both the conference and national levels. At the national level, Morningside crowned six national champions at the 2012 and 2013 NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Morningside athletes have produced 62 All-America performances at the NAIA National Championships during the Nash era. Nash was named the 2013 Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Mens Indoor Track & Field Co-Coach of the Year after the Mustangs finished second at the 2013 GPAC Indoor Track & Field Championships for their highest finish ever at the conference championships. He was also the 2012 GPAC Mens Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year after the Mustangs finished third at the conference meet for their previous best league finish. Nash was named the 2009 GPAC Womens Indoor Track & Field Co-Coach of the Year after the Mustangs finished fourth at the GPAC Indoor Championships for their highest finish ever at the conference meet. Nash, a 1990 Morningside graduate, was previously the head boy's and girl's cross country coach and an assistant track coach at Sioux City West High School. As a collegian, Nash was one of the most successful middle distance runners in Morningside history. He earned All-America honors in the 800-meters as a senior. Nash set Morningside indoor records in the 1500-meters (3:58.30) and mile (4:15.30) and outdoor records in the 800-meters (1:51.03) and 1500-meters (3:57.50). Nash was also part of school-record setting relay teams in the outdoor 4x800-meters (7:44.32) and the indoor 4x800-meters (7:50.64). He was inducted into Morningside's M-Club Hall of Fame in 2010. Nash is a highly successful amateur runner at the national level and was named 2003 Master's Male Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field (USATF). He was the 2005 USATF outdoor national champion in the 1500-meters and 800-meters in the 35 to 39-year-old division and broke the age group record in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.91. Nash was the 2006 Sioux City Relays champion in the 800-meters by running a time of 1:52.85 at the age of 38. Nash was as an assistant track coach at Morningside for eight years before he was named to the head post. He was also an assistant track coach at the University of South Dakota and Sioux City West and Wilton High Schools in Iowa. As head cross country coach at Sioux City West, Nash's boy's teams consistently won city and conference championships and qualified for the state meet at the team or individual levels. The Iowa High School Athletic Association presented Nash with the Bernie Saggau Coaching Award for sportsmanship, citizenship, and integrity in 2000. Nash holds a master's degree from the University of South Dakota.   Assistant Coach Vaughn Tackmann E-Mail: Vaughn Tackmann is the Mustangs top assistant track & field and assistant cross country coach. Tackmann was previously an assistant track & field coach for four years at Luther College, where he coached the teams sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers. He is a 2011 graduate of Luther, where he was a four-year letter winner in track & field. Tackmann earned All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) honors in the 1600-meter relay in his 2010 junior campaign and was a member of the IIAC Spring Sports All-Academic Team. Tackmann ran two of the fastest times in Norse history during the 2010 outdoor season with times of 22.51 seconds in the 200-meters and 49.82 in the 400-meters. He clocked a time of 51.25 seconds for one of the top 400-meter times in Luther history during his 2011 senior campaign.   Assistant Coach Monte Larsen Monte Larsen, a 2012 Morningside graduate, works with the Mustangs' hurdlers and middle distance runners. Larsen ranks him as one of the greatest track athletes in Morningside history. He was a 12-time NAIA All-American and a four-time NAIA National Champion. Larsen was the 2013 NAIA Indoor 800-Meters National Champion while competing as a graduate school student-athlete. He anchored the Mustangs to national titles in the 3200-meter relay at both the 2012 and 2013 NAIA Indoor National Championships and the 2013 NAIA Outdoor National Championships. Larsen was a nine-time GPAC champion in individual events and was part of five conference championship relay teams. He received the Top Performance of the Meet awards at the 2011 and 2013 GPAC Outdoor Championships and the 2012 GPAC Indoor Championships and received the NAIA National Track Athlete of the Week award three times during his career. He is the Morningside record holder in the outdoor 800-meters, the indoor 600-meters, 800-meters, 1000-meters, and 600-yard dash, and is part of five school-record holding relay teams. Aside from his exploits on the track, Larsen was a standout in the classroom and a three-time Capital One Academic All-American, including the 2012 and 2013 Capital One College Division Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-American of the Year.   Assistant Coach Lisa Ryan Lisa Ryan works with the Mustangs hurdlers and distance runners. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she earned NCAA All-America honors in field hockey. Ryan, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a state champion in the 100-meter hurdles and the 800-meters during her prep career. Ryan is a meteorologist for KMEG TV in Sioux City and is certified in personal training, core training, plyometrics, sprints, and zumba.   Assistant Coach Stan Simpson Stan Simpson works with the Mustangs' hurdlers, weight throwers, and middle distance runners. Simpson was previously the head boy's track & field coach at Lawton-Bronson High School, where he led the Eagles to a state championship in 1991. Simpson coached Lawton-Bronson to 10 Maple Valley Conference championships in his 16 seasons as head coach. He received a state coach of the year award in 1991 and a regional coach of the year award in 1995. Simpson set a school record in the high hurdles during his prep career at Ogden High School in Iowa and was a four-year letterwinnner in track and football at Wayne State College.
