Oscar Mendoza
Assistant Coach
Mendoza as the new soccer head coach for the 2015 season. Oscar will come to New Mexico Highlands after spending the 2014-2015 season as an assistant coach at Cleveland State University. His first year at Cleveland State he helped guide the program to its first conference tournament appearance in 5 years, break school records, helped place players on the All-Conference Team, and helped players achieve Player of the Week honors. Coach Mendoza has an outstanding lineup of references that include the 2010 MLS Coach of the Year Schellas Hyndman, Univeristy of Arkansas Head Coach Colby Hale, UTEP Head Coach Kevin Cross, and Cleveland State University Head Coach Sonia Curvelo to name a few. Mendoza has more than 17 years of highly-successful coaching experience that includes: NCAA D.I, international experience,club soccer, and university soccer camps. In 2013, Mendoza led the El Paso Storm U18 Girls to a Division I State Cup title and to a Region 3 tournament berth. That squad also became the first ever El Paso girls team to win a State Cup title at the Division I level. As a club soccer coach he helped place 37 players in collegiate programs with all receiving soccer scholarships. He also coached players who made the U.S. National Pool and one that played in the U-17 and U-20 women's World Cup. Mendoza was also part of the New Mexico Olympic Development Program coaching staff from 2005-10. Mendoza played three years at Gadsden HS in Anthony, New Mexico, earning First Team All-District and All-State honors. He was the second leading scorer in the district, helping the squad to its first top-10 ranking in the state. Mendoza is a 2006 graduate of UTEP with a degree in history and has a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from NMSU. While at UTEP, Mendoza was a starting forward on the men's club team which participated in the NIRSA National Soccer Championship. Anthony Evans
Assistant Coach
Anthony Evans enters his third season as an assistant coach for the New Mexico Highlands University soccer program in 2026. Evans brings more than 20 years of coaching experience across the youth, club, high school, junior college, and NCAA ranks. At NMHU, he assists with all aspects of the program, and is also the director of Goalkeeping. Prior to joining Highlands, Evans served as an assistant coach at Mary Baldwin University, Compton College, Northland College, and Salt Lake Community College. Throughout his career, he has helped programs improve competitively while developing conference-recognized goalkeepers and promoting academic success. He has also coached with the Utah Olympic Development Program and founded Evans Calcio Training, working with players from the youth through collegiate levels. Evans earned a bachelor’s degree in Educational Studies with an emphasis in Special Education from Western Governors University. He holds the United Soccer Coaches Director of Coaching Diploma, Advanced National Diploma, State & Modern Goalkeeping Diplomas, USSF Licenses, and several additional coaching certifications.
