Chris Freije
Head Coach
Chris Freije was named the Men's Head Wrestling coach at New Mexico Highlands University in March. "We couldn't be happier to have Chris be our Head Wrestling Coach. He's not only experienced, but extremely passionate about Wrestling and we're excited to see him find success with the program," said Co-Director of Athletics Shanna Halalilo. Coach Freije brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Cowboy wrestling program. He is an NCAA DII National Finalist for Western Colorado University, an RMAC/Super Region IV champion who has competed both for Arizona State University and Western Colorado University. During his coaching tenure, Chris has coached over 30 National Qualifiers, four NCAA DII National Champions, 16 NCAA DII All-Americans, 15 NCAA DII Super Region Champions, and Multiple NCAA DII Super Region finalists. Freije previously served as the Associate Head Coach at Lander University and has been instrumental in their rise to a top program in the country in only three seasons. Lander finished second in the 2023-24 NCAA Division II Championships. Originally from Arizona, Freije is a graduate of Mesa High School where he was a standout wrestler for the Jackrabbits. Freije will use his extensive ties to the Southwest community in developing the wrestling program at NMHU. "I'm ecstatic to be named the next head coach of New Mexico Highlands University Wrestling. I want to thank my family, and mentors for their support and guidance throughout the process. Along with them I want to thank Jim Deisler and Shanna Halalilo for being believing in my vision for the program moving forward," said Freije. "There is a strong history of wrestling here in New Mexico and across the Southwest. The sport is also a great mesh with the traditions and culture of the region. Our focus is to bring in honest, hard-working, quality young men who have their sights set on becoming college graduates, consistently competing for RMAC and NCAA Championships and find enjoyment and gratitude for the daily process of moving towards attaining success."

Doug Moses

Moses is beginning his ninth season as head coach of the New Mexico Highlands wrestling program, guiding the team since its rebirth for the 2005-06 season. During head coach Doug Moses tenure with New Mexico Highlands wrestling, he has produced New Mexico Highlands Universitys first ever NCAA National Champion, Seth Wright, at 125 pounds in 2010. Entering the ninth season directing the wrestling program here at New Mexico Highlands University, Head Coach Doug Moses has produced five All-Americans (Patrick Sharpe at 141 lb. in 2006, Luke McPeak at 197 lbs. in 2009, Jesse Feinsod at 174 lbs. in both 2008 and 2009 and Seth Wright at 125 lbs. in 2010). Along with coaching five All-Americans, Moses has mentored nine NCAA National Qualifiers (Patrick Sharpe and Charles Segal in 2006, Ross Montour in 2007, Jesse Boggs in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Luke McPeak in 2009, Jesse Feinsod in 2008 and 2009, Seth Wright in 2010, Justin Rockhill in 2013 and Erick Rangel in 2014). Ross Montour was the NCAA Western Regional/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion at 141 lbs. in 2007. In his coaching career, he has produced an astonishing 73 All-Americans and 13 National Champions. Donovan Troup
Assistant Coach
Troup is in his second year as a Graduate Assistant coach for the New Mexico Highlands wrestling program. He graduated from Highlands in 2011 with a bachelors degree in finance and is currently a finishing his MBA. Coach Troup comes to the Cowboys from Colorado Springs, Colorado. After a successful wrestling career at Cheyenne Mountain HS, he was brought to Highlands by head coach Doug Moses. While wrestling for the Cowboys, Troup was a 4-year starter at 133 pounds, team captain in 2010-11 and an Academic All-American. After wrestling at Highlands, Coach Troup returned home to Colorado. There, he coached high school wrestling for the three seasons while working professionally. He was also a freestyle wrestling coach for Cheyenne Mountain Wrestling Club in 2012 and 2013. He is excited to contribute back to Highlands as Coach Mosess Assistant.
