Head Coach

Pina is in his 24th season as the programs Head Coach. During that time, he has compiled a career record of 318-301 (.514).   Since his debut as Head Coach in 1994, Pina has piloted the Violets to two Molten Division III Mens Invitational Championships (2000, 2002), two Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Hay Division titles (2002, 2004), and seven EIVA Tournament invitations (1999, 2001-02, 2004-05, 2008, 2011).   Pina led the team to a 14-14 record in 2016, marking the sixth-straight season with a winning percentage of .500 or above. The Violets posted a 5-2 home record, while seven of their 14 losses came in five-set contests. The squad also went 6-2 in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play, qualified for the UVC Tournament as the #3 seed, and finished the season ranked #13 in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).   Individually, senior captain Nick Benson earned Second Team All-UVC honors, junior Chase Klein was tabbed Honorable Mention and junior Derrick Chiu was selected AVCA National Player of the Week on March 29.   Also successful off the court, eight of Pinas players were named UVC All-Academic while three earned the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award.   In 2015, the Violets posted a 17-11 overall record and finished the campaign ranked #9 in the AVCA poll. NYU advanced to the UVC semifinals, where they lost to the eventual champions, the Stevens Institute of Technology.   Individually, Benson was named Second Team All-UVC while Klein earned Honorable Mention. In 2014, NYU went 18-11 overall and reached the UVC Tournament Final. NYU finished the season ranked #13 in the AVCA Poll. Nick Capriccio was named Second Team All-UVC, while Connor Mortland earned First Team accolades as well as being named to the AVCA All-America Second Team for the third time in his career.   In 2013, NYU posted a 14-13 record with a 7-4 mark in its second season as a member of the UVC. Under Pinas tutelage, Mortland (Second Team) and Capriccio (Honorable Mention) each received UVC postseason accolades.   The Violets did not miss a beat during the squads first year in the UVC in 2012. Pina led the team to a 20-9 overall record and to a perfect 11-0 mark within the conference. Though it fell short of reaching the inaugural NCAA Division III Championship, NYU finished the season ranked #8 by the AVCA. For his efforts, Pina was named UVC Coach of the Year.   In 2011, the Violets final year in the EIVA, the team went 19-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference, earning a berth in the EIVA Tournament. The Violets also earned the #1 ranking in all of Division III late in the season and missed out on a berth to the Molten Division III Championship on tiebreakers. NYU ended the year ranked #3 in Division III by the AVCA , the sixth time the program had ended a season in the top three.   In 2008, the Violets went 23-8 and advanced to the EIVA semifinals for the first time before bowing to eventual NCAA National Champion Penn State University in three tightly-contested sets. In addition to tying for the second-most wins in school history, NYU finished with a #5 final ranking in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Poll.   Pina has coached seven First Team All-Americans and nine Second Team All-Americans during his tenure. Mortland earned AVCA Second Team All-America honors in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Pinas most recent First Team honoree, Devin Zolnowski, graduated in 2009 as the programs career and single-season leader in kills and points during the rally-scoring era.    Pina began his coaching career as an assistant under NYUs Mike Michalakis from 1991-93. He helped the Violets earn an EIVA Tournament bid in 1992.   A two-year captain and four-year starter for NYU's mens club volleyball team, Pina earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1987. The schools mens volleyball program began playing at the varsity level in 1989.    Above all, Pinas heart lies with an NYU volleyball program that he has helped to build into one of the nations best.    "NYU provides an educational experience unlike any other school," Pina said. "Our location, our faculty and our student body are the university's strongest assets. I believe it is truly one of the best places in the country for a student-athlete to continue his academic career. The Scarlet Raiders posted a 17-12 overall record and reached the semifinals of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Championship.   The womens team also had its best season in years under France in 2010, going 10-18, and recording its most victories in a season since 2006.   Prior to his stint at Rutgers-Newark, France served as an assistant coach with the NYU mens volleyball program for five years. In 2007, he helped the Violets finish the season ranked #6 in the CSTV/ AVCA Division III Coaches Poll and post a 6-4 record in the EIVA Hay Division.   In 2006, France helped lead NYU to the #2 ranking in the final CSTV/ AVCA Poll and a second-place finish in the EIVA Championship. The squad also reached the EIVA playoffs in 2005 with France on staff.   Prior to beginning his first stint at NYU, France was the Mens and Womens Head Volleyball Coach at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY, from 1998-2002. During his years there, the mens team posted an overall record of 76-46 and he earned Northeastern Collegiate Volleyball Association Coach of the Year honors in 2000. France also guided the womens team to a 52-27 record and to three Hudson Valley Womens Athletic Conference titles.   In addition to his collegiate experience, France was selected to serve as the Head Coach of the New York City Empire State Games Mens Open (2005) and Scholastic Womens (2002-04) teams. He has also worked for USA Volleyball in their High Performance Program as an Assistant Coach (2007, 2008, 2014, 2015). Prior to his collegiate experience, France coached volleyball, basketball, softball, and swimming at the Marymount School in Manhattan.   A 1991 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications, France played on the Falcons club volleyball team for three years   France is a native and resident of Brooklyn, NY.
