Nicole Bellini
Head Coach
Bellini joined New York University as an assistant softball coach in October 2022, was named Interim Head Coach for the 2024-25 season, and was promoted to Head Coach prior to the 2025-26 season. During her one season as Interim Head Coach, the Violets posted a 10-28 record, which included victories over University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents Brandeis University and Carnegie Mellon University. Bellini helped produce a pair of Second Team All-UAA players that season, as both Alyssa Quary and Naya Schubel earned the designations. A total of 11 players were named UAA Spring All-Academic, while Nicole Cicchetti, Olivia de Hesselle, Marina Egbert, and Karleigh Kleuver were cited as Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators (CSC). During the 2024 as an assistant coach, the Violets posted an 8-28 record, ending the campaign with a doubleheader sweep over Hunter College. Bellini helped produce a pair of UAA honorees during that campaign, as both Madi Hand and Lindsey Baron earned Second Team accolades. A total of 12 student-athletes earned UAA All-Academic honors. Lily Candelaria and Jessie Werthman received Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards, while Hand, Werthman, Emily Stone, and Lizzy Smith were chosen as CSC Academic All-District. In her first season on the staff, Bellini helped lead the Violets to a 19-19 record, including six wins against UAA opponents. Ten players received UAA All-Academic honors and Samantha Burggraf (infield) and Margaux Lesser (infield) were named All-UAA Second Team. Bellini served as the Head Softball Coach at her alma mater, Baruch College, from 2020-22. Under her guidance, the Bearcats Baruch finished third in the City University of New York Athletic Conference CUNYAC) standings as she took home CUNYAC Coach of the Year honors. A 2018 Baruch graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems and a Psychology minor, Bellini played for the Bearcats for three seasons, was a three-time CUNYAC All-Star, three-time MVP, and all-time leader in batting average (.406). A year before going to Baruch, Bellini attended NCAA Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University, was a member of their softball team and made the Northeast Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll. Bellini is a native and resident of Staten Island, NY.

Jen Richard
Assistant Coach
Jen Richard began working as an assistant coach of the New York University softball team in September 2025. Prior to NYU, Richard gained a great deal of coaching experience at all levels of the game as both a head coach and an assistant coach. Most recently, she served as the assistant softball coach at The College of New Jersey from 2021-24. During her time there, Richard primarily focused on the outfielders and hitting/slapping. The Lions posted a 112-38 record during her tenure. Richard led the University of the Sciences softball team as head coach from 2014-16. Her responsibilities included overseeing the program, running practices and lifts, serving as the athlete academic advisor, and coordinating the team’s travel. Richard has also coached at the youth and high-school level, serving as a head coach for the Jersey Flames softball organization from 2011-20. She held the role of assistant softball coach at J.W Hallahan High School in 2018. A 2011 graduate of Philadelphia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design and Communications. A four-year member of their softball team, Richard earned CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) First Team and Honorable Mention accolades in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Richard continued her studies at Temple University, earning a master’s degree in Sports Business in 2018. Richard is a native of Millstone Township, NJ, and resident of Waretown, NJ

Rylea Sandel
Assistant Coach
Rylea Sandel joined the New York University softball staff as an assistant coach in January 2026. She is working mainly with the infielders. A 2025 graduate of John Jay College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Forensic Psychology, Sandel was four-year member of their softball team. Sandel earned CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, was a four-year team captain, four-time CUNYAC All-Star, and helped lead the team to three CUNYAC Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. A native of Deer Park, TX, Sandel resides in New York, NY.

Connor Rumpit
Assistant Coach
Connor Rumpit was hired as an assistant coach of New York University's men's and women's swimming teams in June 2022. Rumpit helped bring the program to new heights in 2024-25, as the women’s team finished as National Champion Runner-ups, the highest finish in team history. His swimmers won five National Championships, as College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Swimmer of the Year Kaley McIntyre won three individual national titles (50-, 100-, 200-yard freestyle), Nicole Ranile won one (200-yard butterfly), and four Violets (McIntyre, Ranile, Elle Motekaitis, Isabel Oldham) combined to win the 800-yard freestyle relay. The men’s team went undefeated in dual meets (8-0) and tied its highest finish with a fourth-place performance at the NCAA Division III Championships. Overall, the women’s team (5-1) earned All-America honors in 28 events at the NCAA’s, while the men’s squad produced 24. A total of 22 NYU swimmers & divers (12 women, 10 men) captured All-America accolades. Both squads finished second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, as NYU earned UAA Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year honors. McIntyre was selected UAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year and Maksym Nechydyuk was Men’s Rookie of the Year. The 2023-24 season was a momentous one for NYU, with numerous achievements produced by the student-athletes, team and coaching staff. The Violets toppled 36 program records and posted best-ever finishes at the NCAA Division III Championships with the women taking third overall and the men placing fourth. The men’s and women’s squads combined for eight national titles: Kaley McIntyre (50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle), Derek Maas (100- and 200-yard breaststroke, and the 200-yard IM) and Caitlin Marshall (200-yard butterfly), and the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Marshall, McIntyre, Nicole Ranile, and Aanya Wala. Overall, the teams combined for 61 All-America honors, and McIntyre earned NCAA Division III Women’s Swimmer of the Year accolades. At the conference level, the Violets’ garnered 10 individual and four relay-team University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, leading to a second-place finish for the men and a third-place showing for the women. McIntyre and Maas earned UAA Swimmer of the Year honors, Calista Lynch was named UAA Newcomer of the Year, and NYU received UAA Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year honor. Rumpit joined NYU after working as a graduate assistant coach and teaching fellow at Springfield College from August 2020-May 2022. While there, he developed and ran workouts and training programs for the swimming team and engaged in recruiting efforts. He also taught physical education courses as part of his teaching fellow duties. A four-year swimming team member at Kenyon College (2016-20), a perennial powerhouse in Division III swimming, Rumpit earned All-America status three times while setting the North Coast Athletic Conference record in the 500 freestyle in 2020. He also took on the role of coaching assistant during his junior year at Kenyon, recording times, sitting in on recruiting meetings with coaches and providing summaries of recruits to the coaching staff. The Brookfield, WI, native also served as an assistant coach at the Elmbrook Swim Club in his hometown during the 2021 summer while also working as an athletic intern at Brookfield East High School. Rumpit held a pair of positions at the Wyoming Swim Club in Wyoming, OH, during the summer of 2019, working as Head Coach and assistant pool manager of the club's swimming program. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Kenyon in 2020, Rumpit went on to earn a Master's of Education in Athletic Administration from Springfield College in 2022. A native of Milwaukee, WI, Rumpit resides in Brooklyn, NY.

A former scholarship athlete at Division I Gardner-Webb University, Johns joined NYU with a great deal of coaching experience. Prior to joining NYU, she served as a swim coach at the Chelsea Piers Athletic Club in Stamford, CT, and as the assistant head coach at the Fairfield County Swim League in Darien, CT. A 2019 graduate of Gardner-Webb with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design, Johns was a four-year member of the Runnin' Bulldogs' swim team. She was an 'A' Finalist at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference Championships and an All-Conference Academic Qualifier. In 2019-20, Johns lived in Australia and worked as a graphic designer for Engine Swim, a competition swimwear brand. Johns' first coaching experience was as an assistant at Chattahoochee Gold in Atlanta. A native of Atlanta, GA, and resident of Brooklyn, NY, Johns also serves as an Assistant Natatorium Manager at NYU.

Hank Browning

A total of 38 All-America honors were achieved, while two National Champions (Caitlin Marshall – 200 butterfly; Jessica Flynn – 100 backstroke) were produced. Flynn led the team with four All-America honors, while Graham Chatoor, Nika Kouznetsova and Isabel Oldham each earned three. NYU did not compete in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, a total of 16 men and 16 women earned UAA Winter Sport All-Academic honors. The 2019-20 season featured 26 team members earning 60 All-America honors, all qualifying for the NCAA Championships but unable to compete when the event was canceled due to Covid-19. Individually, Honore Collins and Sydney Catron led the women’s team with seven event qualifications, while Giorgio DelGrosso led the men with four. The women’s team, which finished the season ranked #6 in the nation by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), tied its best finish ever with a second-place showing at the UAA Championships and NYU received UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The men’s team, which was ranked #14 in the nation by the CSCAA at the end of the season after having risen as high as #6 during the campaign, finished third at the UAA Championships. In addition to her seven All-America honors, Collins won five UAA titles and was named both UAA Swimmer of the Year and NYU Senior Athlete of the Year. DelGrosso won two UAA backstroke events and was named Co-Swimmer of the Year. Both student-athletes earned CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-America At-Large honors and were named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans. Flynn, who was a member of two winning relays at the UAA’s, was named UAA Co-Rookie of the Year and NYU Female Freshman of the Year. The 2018-19 season was a historic one for NYU as the women finished a best-ever fifth at the NCAA Championships while Collins won three national titles and was named National Swimmer of the Year by the CSCAA. Collins, who captured the 200- and 400-yard Individual Medleys as well as the 200-yard Butterfly at the NCAA’s, was also a member of three All-America relays. In total, nine women combined to earn 22 All-America honors in 2019. On the men’s side, sophomore Elan Oumarov earned two of the Violets’ four All-America honors as the squad combined for a 28th-place national finish. NYU also produced both the men’s (Chatoor) and women’s (Rachel Reistroffer) UAA Rookies of the Year. The men finished with a 4-2 dual-meet record in ’18-19, while the women produced a 3-3 mark. In 2017-18, the men posted a near-perfect 7-1 record in dual-meets while the women ended the season at 4-4. Both teams had numerous qualifiers for the NCAA Championships as the men posted a sixth-place national finish while the women produced a 10th-place result. In addition, both teams achieved second-place finishes at their respective UAA Championships. Ian Rainey became the first NYU male swimmer in program history to win a NCAA Championships event by capturing both the 200-yard and 400-yard IM. Rainey was just one of a plethora of student-athletes who made their marks at the NCAA’s as the men’s squad earned 17 All-America honors and 14 Honorable Mentions. Rainey finished with six honors and Chad Moody had five while DelGrosso, Tim Kou and Nianzhong Liu each had four. The women’s team captured seven All-America awards and 11 Honorable Mentions in ’17-18. Collins led the team with four total awards (two All-America, two Honorable Mentions), while Grace Wakabayashi earned three honors. In Browning’s first season in 2016-17, the women posted a perfect 8-0 dual-meet record and ended the season having won 26 consecutive dual meets, while the men finished with a 4-3 mark. The men finished a best-ever fifth at the NCAA Championships while the women took eighth. In addition, the women placed second and the men took third at the UAA Championships. Collins became NYU’s first-ever swimming & diving National Champion by winning the 200-yard IM at the NCAA’s. Her victory was one of 46 Violet All-America accolades (26 men, 20 women). Kou led NYU with five All-America honors, while Elise Gibbs, Noel Leung and Collins led the women’s team with three apiece. For their achievements, Collins and classmate Carlos Colmenares were named NYU Female and Male Freshman Athlete of the Year, respectively. Browning, who spent the 2012-14 seasons as an assistant coach at Tufts University, is a 2010 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business communication studies. A decorated swimmer for the Tar Heels, Browning was the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Year, an All-American, a two-time UNC Most Valuable Swimmer, and served as a team captain his junior and senior years. He qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in 2008 in the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle and was a three-year selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Currently also working as a New York City Sales Manager for Remarkable Liquids, Browning is a native of Cincinnati, OH, and resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Emma Reaney

A 2015 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Communication Design and a minor in Business Economics, Reaney was a four-year member of the Fighting Irish’s swim team. As a junior, she set NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), U.S. Open, and American records and won the program’s first-ever individual national title in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.06). Reaney was named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. An 11-time NCAA All-American at Notre Dame, Reaney went on to compete as a professional for USA Swimming. She won the silver medal in the 200-meter medley relay at the 2014 World Short Course Championships and took bronze in the 50-meter breaststroke at the 2015 World University Games. Reaney’s coaching experience also includes stints as a Clinician for the Fitter & Faster Swim Camps (2018-21) and as an instructor at the Notre Dame Swim Camp (2013-14). A native of Lawrence, KS, Reaney resides in New York City.

Derek Maas
Assistant Coach
Derek Maas is serving his first year as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s and women’s swimming teams in 2024-25. He is assisting with on-deck coaching and recruitment. In his first season on staff, Maas helped bring the program to new heights, as the women’s team finished as National Champion Runner-ups, the highest finish in team history. His swimmers won five National Championships, as College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Swimmer of the Year Kaley McIntyre won three individual national titles (50-, 100-, 200-yard freestyle), Nicole Ranile won one (200-yard butterfly), and four Violets (McIntyre, Ranile, Elle Motekaitis, Isabel Oldham) combined to win the 800-yard freestyle relay. The men’s team went undefeated in dual meets (8-0) and tied its highest finish with a fourth-place performance at the NCAA Division III Championships. A member of the men’s swimming and diving team during the 2023-24 season, Maas’ time at NYU was spectacular and filled with record-breaking accomplishments. He won three National Championships, four University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, and was named UAA Male Swimmer of the Year. His NCAA titles included victories in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley. In total, Maas earned seven All-America honors in helping lead the Violets to a best-ever fourth-place team finish at the 2024 NCAA Division III Championships. Over the summer, Maas represented NYU at the Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis, IN. Currently studying at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine, Maas came to NYU after graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He spent his four years as a member of the Crimson Tide’s swimming team. A 12-time All-American at Alabama who earned the NCAA Elite 90 Award, Maas set several program records, including the 200 IM (1:42:59) at the 2023 NCAA Division I Championships. A native of Holland, MI, Maas resides in New York City.

Issara Schmidt
Assistant Coach
Issara Schmidt joined New York University as an assistant diving coach for the 2025-26 season. Schmidt returns to NYU following one of the most accomplished diving careers in program history. A four-year team member, she was five-time NCAA All-American, earning First Team honors in the 1-meter dive and Second Team honors in the 3-meter dive at the NCAA Championships as sophomore following First Team honors in the 1-meter as a freshman. Schmidt added additional All-America honors as a senior, finishing seventh in the 1-meter and 10th in the 3-meter. A 2025 NYU graduate with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Economics, Schmidt also excelled at the regional level, capturing three NCAA Northeast Regional titles during her career (3-meter twice). Earning multiple University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors throughout her career, Schmidt was also recognized for her academic achievements as a multi-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and UAA All-Academic honoree. An NYU Presidential Honors Scholar, she also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition to her current role with the team, Schmidt also works for EmpowerED Consulting, a group that collaborates and consults on improvements for NYC Public School sites. A native of Winona, MN, Schmidt resides in New York City.

Vicky Xu
Assistant Coach
Vicky Xu joined New York University as a volunteer assistant diving coach in September 2024. Xu helped produce a pair of All-Americans during her first season. Issara Schmidt earned First (1-meter) and Second (3-meter) Team honors at the NCAA Division III Championships, while Maya Williams earned two Second Team distinctions. Schmidt was also the NCAA Regional 3-Meter Diving Champion. On the men’s side, William Hopkins earned Academic All-District honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The combined performances of the divers and swimmers at the NCAA Division III Championships helped lead the Violets to best-ever team finishes (women 2nd, men 4th) in program history. Xu brought a wealth of experience to NYU from her recent role as an assistant coach of the Penn State University swimming & diving team in 2023-24. While there, Xu led practice sessions for more than 20 hours per week, creating individualized training schedules to cater to the diverse needs of athletes. She effectively blended aquatic and dry training techniques to enhance muscle memory for divers and guided athletes through psychological strategies to thrive in high-pressure situations. A standout student-athlete at the University of Kansas, Xu earned a degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2023. Her impressive accomplishments included being a Big 12 Diving Champion and achieving an NCAA Top-8 finish. Xu also produced a decorated career as a former Chinese National Team athlete with 13 World Championship titles and 19 World Championship medals. Xu went on to earn a Master of Finance from Penn State in 2024. In addition to her athletic background, Xu ran a small business in Hebei, China, from 2014-17, where she matched clients with suitable skincare products and conducted research to deepen her industry knowledge. A native of Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province in China, Xu resides in Ozone Park, NY.
