Tempest Vance

Associate Head Coach

Vances leadership. He won four MEAC triple jump titles since 2013 with two indoor and outdoor crowns apiece. He also advanced to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round held in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2015.  Long jumper Frank Quarles is a three-time MEAC outdoor men's long jump champion (2014-16). Quarles also made an appearance in the 2016 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in the long jump, and during the 2015 indoor season, Quarles also took home the MEAC title in the long jump. Vance brings with her seven years of experience competing and working with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. She joined the Aggies program after spending the previous three seasons at Bethune-Cookman University. Under head coach Donald Cooper, Vance served as the track and field program's jumps coach in addition to its recruiting coordinator, compliance liaison and travel coordinator. During her tenure at B-CU, she helped to prepare and develop several athletes for the decathlon event. All athletes under Vance's tutelage earned personal-best performances every year. Prior to joining the B-CU staff, she was an outstanding student-athlete who graduated cum laude from South Carolina State University with a degree in biology. As a collegiate, she held the MEAC indoor track and field pentathlon record for three years starting in 2009, and currently holds the Bulldogs record in the women's 400-meter hurdles. A member of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Vance is also USA Track and Field Level I and Level II Certified in the horizontal and vertical jump events.

Perry Cabean

Cabeans primary responsibility is to coach the Aggies mens and womens cross country runners as well as assists with the distance runners for the track and field indoor and outdoor seasons. The cross country programs have made tremendous improvements under Cabean, including back-to-back second-place finish for the men at the MEAC Cross Country Championships in 2014 and 15. In each season since 2013, the Aggies have placed at least two male members, including three runners in 2014 and 15, on the All-MEAC team because those runners finished in the top-15 at the MEAC championships. Darren White is a three-time All-MEAC performer under Cabeans tutelage. During the 2015 MEAC championships, Cabean coached freshman Hakeem Mustafaa to a second-place finish, while White finished third. Cabean has also led the Aggies to back-to-back (2013 & 2014) HBCU Robert Shumake Great American Cross Country Festival titles. During the track seasons, White has prospered with Cabeans leadership. White captured third-team All-MEAC honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2014 before earning second-team and third-team All-MEAC honors in the 3000 and 5000 meters at the 2015 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. White was a third-team All-MEAC selection after finishing third in the 5,000 meters at the 2016 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships while teammate and Cabeans son Perry Cabean was second-team All-MEAC in the 10,000 meters. Cabean joined the Aggies after 10 successful years as the distance coach and director of athletics of the Tri-City Relays Track Club. Cabean guided his youth cross country team to the AAU national team title in 2012 in the Boys High School division.  Additionally, he also coached a second-place finisher in the 5000 meters of the Young Womans division. In 2010, Cabeans cross country team finished as AAU national runner-up in the Intermediate Boys division boasted by an individual national title in the 2000-meters cross country run in the Primary Girls division.  Overall, Cabean has assisted in the development of 32 AAU track and field All-Americans, 11 USATF track and field All-Americans, eight AAU cross country All-Americans, and two USATF cross country All-Americans. More than 40 Tri-City athletes have moved on to participate as NCAA student-athletes. Prior to his time with AAU programs, Cabean coached the cross country and track and field teams at Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Mich., in 1995 and 1996.  Cabean coached the 2012 North Carolina 1A/2A/3A indoor girls 3200-meter runner-up.  Five years earlier, he coached the North Carolina 1A/2A/3A indoor boys 1000-meter champion.  At Ronald Reagan High School in Pfafftown, N.C., Cabean assisted coach Christopher Catton with the boys and girls distance runners.  Reagan finished runner-up at the boys 4A N.C. state championships, winning the boys 4A 4x800 meter relay.  In 2011, the Reagan cross country team finished fifth at the 4A N.C. state championships.   Cabean is a native of Highland Park, Mich., where he was an outstanding distance runner at Highland Park Community High School.  Cabean attended the University of Michigan where he briefly participated with the cross country and track and field teams.  After graduating from the University of Michigan, Cabean attended Bowling Green State University where he earned an MBA in finance.  Cabean is a USA Track and Field Level 1 Certified Coach and is a USA Track and Field Certified Official.  He resides in Lewisville, North Carolina with his wife Flora and two sons, Perry and Miles.  Perry Cabean became an assistant track and field coach at North Carolina A&T under director of track & field programs Duane Ross in 2013.
