Assistant Coach
Thompson completed his 12th year as head coach of the North Central College women's golf team in 2015-2016. He has guided the young program to a new level of success, molding the Cardinals into a contender on the national level. In 2015, his team placed third at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships for the second straight year, with two players earning All-CCIW status and five making the Academic All-CCIW Team. The previous year, North Central had two of the CCIW's top three individual finishers. During the 2013-2014 campaign, the Cardinals finished in second place at the CCIW Championships as Mary Kate Rohn '14 earned the program's second individual CCIW title, tying for first with a two round total score of 151, also earning All-CCIW honors for the second straight season. The Cardinals turned in an impressive fall schedule as well, winning the North Central Fall Classic and finishing in the top-five in four other tournaments. The 2013 squad also set new precedence in the classroom as a program record eight student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-CCIW selections. In 2010, North Central experienced its best fall season to date, winning five tournaments and establishing a new 18-hole scoring record of 314, which broke the all-time scoring record at the Augustana College Fall Classic. The Cardinals also established a new 36-hole scoring record of 645 at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic and posted their highest placing at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships, finishing second. The Cardinals were selected as an at-large qualifier for the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship in spring 2011, marking North Central's first appearance in the national tournament. Alyssa Gaudio '11 was named a First Team All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association, which also selected Thompson as its Central Region Coach of the Year. North Central also established a new benchmark for individual success at the CCIW Championships, as three players, Gaudio, Mallory Carr '12, and Marisa Miko '13 each earned All-CCIW honors. Thompson received his second CCIW Coach of the Year Award as well. 2010 saw the Cardinals venture into the national rankings for the first time as well. as they were rated 14th in the final National Golf Coaches Association NCAA Divsion III Poll for the fall. North Central finished the spring ranked seventh in the national computer rankings released by Golfstat. North Central repeated its second-place finish at the CCIW Championships in fall 2011, also adding a pair of first-place finishes at tournaments during the season. Carr and Miko earned All-CCIW honors once again. The Cardinals began jumping up the leaderboards in 2007, as Gaudio became the first Cardinal to win the individual title at the CCIW Championships, and Thompson became North Central's first CCIW Coach of the Year. Gaudio became the first female golfer in the history of the College to participate in the NCAA Division III National Championships in the spring of 2008. The 2008 fall season saw the Cardinals continue their high level of success, winning the Monmouth College (Ill.) Fighting Scots Invitational to post the first tournament victory in the program's history. North Central also posted its highest team finish ever at the CCIW Championships, placing third, and Gaudio once again received All-Conference honors. In 2009, the Cardinals posted their second invitational victory, winning the season-opening University of St. Francis (Ill.) Fall Invitational by 13 strokes over the hosts. North Central finished in the top five at seven out of 10 tournaments, including a fourth-place finish at the CCIW Championships. Gaudio placed in the top five six times in 2009, placing first three times, and finished fifth at the CCIW Championships to earn All-CCIW honors for an unprecedented third time. Miko placed in the top five three times, including one first-place effort. Thompson's passion for golf has led him to participate in golf events in both the United Sates and Europe, where he has won various amateur competitions. He furthered his golfing development and skills from Troy Burton, head golf pro at Lake Arrowhead Country Club in California. Troy Burton is the brother of Brandi Burton, the touring LPGA Golf Pro. Thompson has spent over 30 years in the transportation industry with a Fortune 500 company as director of national accounts. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in business administration. Thompson and his wife, Sandy, reside in Naperville.
