Andrew Carlson

Head Coach

Carlson is in his third full season directing the distance runners for the North Dakota State mens and womens track & field and cross country teams in 2016-17. In 2016, Carlson directed NDSU's Erin Teschuk to four All-America honors -- one in cross country, two in indoor track, and one in outdoor track. His training plan guided Teschuk to a spot on Team Canada for the 2016 Rio Olympics after she captured the Canadian national championship in the 3,000m steeplechase in July. Teschuk's accomplishments resulted in her signing a professional contact with ASICS Furman Elite. During the 2016 track campaign alone, Carlson coached NDSU athletes to 12 new marks that rank among NDSU's all-time top 10 lists in the distance events.   Carlson guided the Bison distance program to new levels of success on the national scene in 2015, coaching athletes to a total of four first-team All-America honors. Teschuk was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year and claimed first-team All-American recognition in the mile and 3,000m indoors, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively, at the NCAA Championships. Outdoors, Carlson coached Teschuk and Maddie Van Beek to top-eight finishes in the 3,000m steeplechase at the NCAA meet. Van Beek was named The Summit League's Indoor and Outdoor Championships Track MVP after scoring 28 points with two event titles at the indoor meet and netting 24 points outdoors. On the men's side in 2015, Brett Kelly won a Summit League title in the steeplechase and was the highest Summit League finisher in a men's track event at the NCAA Prelims. Carlson led a resurgence in the Bison men's cross country program that saw two meet titles and the highest finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional since 2011.   A 2005 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Carlson was a two-time NCAA All-American in cross country and set the school record in the 5,000 meters at 13:44.64. He was the 2002 and 2004 NCAA Midwest Region champion in cross country, a two-time runner-up in the Big Ten outdoor 5,000 meters, and also owns the second-fastest time in school history in the 10,000 meters (28:56:59).   Post-collegiately, he joined Team USA Minnesota in 2005, and won the USA 15K road championship in 2008. He was also a member of the 2011 U.S. squad that competed in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain.   From 2008-10, Carlson trained with the McMillan Elite training group in Flagstaff, Ariz., during which time he won the 2010 USA 25K title, before rejoining Team USA Minnesota late in 2010. In 2012, Carlson placed sixth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:11.24 -- a time that still stands as the seventh-fastest marathon debut in U.S. history.   Carlson is a graduate of Fargo South High School where he was a four-time all-state honoree and a North Dakota state cross country champion.

Stevie Keller

Coach

Keller enters his second season as the head womens track & field and cross country coach at North Dakota State in 2015-16.   Keller was named the head coach of the Bison womens track & field and cross country programs on Nov. 3, 2014, while remaining as the associate head coach for the NDSU mens track & field team. He is now in his 16th year with NDSU track & field, including seven seasons as associate head coach, directing the Bison multi-events, hurdles and pole vault to unprecedented success.   In his first season as the head womens coach in 2015, Keller led the Bison to their eighth straight indoor and outdoor Summit League team titles, giving NDSU all 16 team conference titles since they joined the league. The Bison also sent 13 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with a total of 16 entries, once again marking the largest contingent of national qualifiers in the schools Division I history.   Since the Bison gained full NCAA Division I status in 2008, the number of achievements racked up by Kellers student-athletes is remarkable. In all, Keller-coached athletes have earned 191 All-Summit League honors and 68 Summit League titles over the past seven seasons.   Keller has directed four athletes to a total of five first-team Division I All-America honors since 2009, including a fifth-place heptathlon finish by Whitney Carlson in 2011 and a fourth-place finish in the pole vault by Leslie Brost at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. In addition, Carlson was a three-time second-team All-American in the long jump and multi-events.   Keller has qualified 13 athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Preliminary Rounds (2010-present) and NCAA Regionals (prior to 2010). Indoors, Keller has coached five NCAA Championships qualifiers.   As a team, the Bison women have won eight consecutive Summit League championships both indoors and outdoors. The NDSU men have claimed four indoor and seven outdoor titles in the last eight seasons.   Keller owns coaching experience on the national and international levels. In 2010 and 2011, he coached Heather Zander, Leslie Brost and Whitney Carlson at the USATF Championships. In 2008, Keller served as an assistant coach for Team USA in the Thorpe Cup decathlon and guided Weston Leutz to a 10th-place finish at the Junior World Championships in the decathlon.   Under Kellers guidance, Brost developed into the most decorated vaulter in NDSU history, with honors including a fourth-place finish and a school record vault of 14-03.25 at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. Brost placed ninth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and was the top collegiate finisher in the event.   Keller coached Carlson to the NDSU heptathlon school record on her way to a fifth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Buchanan, N.D., native also placed ninth in the long jump at the national meet in 2011 and was a second-team All-American in the indoor pentathlon. Carlson was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was later named the NCAA Elite 88 Award winner as the nations top student-athlete in womens track & field.   In 2010, Heather Zander became NDSUs first multi-event Division I All-American after placing eighth in the heptathlon under Kellers guidance.   Matt Bishoff was NDSUs first male Division I All-American in 2009, taking home the honor in the indoor heptathlon.   Prior to NDSUs move to Division I, Keller coached 10 athletes to 28 NCAA Division II All-American awards, including Nate Schmidt who won two NCAA Division II national championships in the decathlon.    As an athlete at NDSU, Keller was a two-time North Central Conference champion and a Division II All-American in the decathlon. Keller also competed at Montana State University where he was a Big Sky Conference champion and Division I All-American in the decathlon. He competed in the 2004 Olympic Trials in the decathlon.   He is married to former NDSU distance runner Erin (Klein) Keller. The couple have one son, Kyson, and one daughter, Aspyn.
