Ashley Phillips enters her 11th season as the head coach of the Northeastern women’s soccer team during 2026, having been named the program’s fourth head coach on March 2, 2016. She previously served as the Huskies’ assistant coach from 2010 to 2015, earning promotion to associate head coach in 2015 and interim head coach in 2016.   In Phillips coaching career with the Huskies, she became the first head coach during CAA history to win the conference’s regular season and postseason championships during their first season as head coach in 2016. She has added 47 All-Conference award mentions, including Alexis Legowski, who earned All-CAA honors in each of her five seasons, and Julianne Ross, who earned four All-CAA First Team awards. Phillips coached Northeastern to 13 straight CAA Tournaments from 2011 to 2023. Phillips mentored the Huskies' first-ever CAA Goalkeeper of the Year honoree Eliza Teplow, in 2025, who also brought home All-CAA First Team accolades as a junior. She has also guided Northeastern’s attack to the single-season program record for goals scored in 2017 recording a total of 41 goals and helped Northeastern secure the No. 3 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll upon entering the 2016 NCAA tournament.  Phillips' playing career first started when she won the 2003 Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year during her senior season in high school. She then went on to play in college at Clemson University where she was the starting goalkeeper from 2004 to 2007. During her time at Clemson, Phillips had won All-ACC First Team in 2017, three-time United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Honoree, and All-American Third Team in 2006. She reached the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals during her junior year and currently holds the program's career saves record at 326 saves making her single-season best 119 saves. Ashley Phillips started first playing professional soccer with the Boston Renegades from 2002 to 2006 and then for the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2008 where she competed in the USL W-League going undefeated as the starting goalkeeper for Atlanta. Northeastern women’s soccer head coach Ashley Phillips announced the hiring of Ricky Newton as associate head coach ahead of the 2025 season. Newton enters his second year with Northeastern during the 2026 season.    “I’m excited to officially welcome Ricky Newton to our coaching staff,” remarked Phillips. “Ricky brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and positive energy to our program. He has coached at two successful Division I programs in the area and has worked extensively at the highest levels of youth club soccer.”   “Ricky possesses a deep technical and tactical understanding of the game, and he has a remarkable ability to teach and develop young players. He’s a thoughtful, detail-oriented coach who communicates clearly and effectively, helping players improve in meaningful ways. His ability to build relationships, foster confidence and bring out the best in those he works with, paired with his strong ability to evaluate talent, makes him an outstanding addition to our staff.”   Newton arrives to Huntington Avenue after spending the past two seasons at Holy Cross. He helped the Crusaders to a 5-7-5 overall and 2-4-3 conference record in 2023, the best season for the program since 2019.   Prior to his time at Holy Cross, Newton spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts. During his time with the Minutewomen, he coached the program’s first and second-ever A-10 Midfielder of the Year award winners in Jenny Hipp and Bella Recinos. Additionally, he coached several student-athletes to All-Atlantic 10 honors, the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and had multiple players go on to play professionally.   He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Gloucestershire, owning a bachelor's degree in sports education. Newton was a standout player, captain and coach who helped lead his team to a national championship in his senior season.
