Roy Coates
Head Coach
Coates' 24th season at the helm of the Huskies swimming and diving program. Since the 1993-94 season, Coates has amassed a 155-99 record (.610) with the Huskies, including 18 winning seasons and 10 straight since 2006-07. Last season, Coates led Northeastern to a 9-4 record. For the first time since joining the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the team finished in first place after day one of CAA Championships. They later landed fifth place overall and on the podium five times, and tabbed five new school records (six overall that season) and more than 30 new personal bests. The team was named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for the third semester straight (fall 2015, GPA of 3.0 or greater) and won the 2015 Alumni Challenge on the womens varsity programs' side for most alumni donor participation with nearly 50 percent. Coates has seen the overhaul of the Northeastern record books continue in his last four seasons. In 2010-11, his Huskies set nine school records, only to be followed up by the 2011-12 squad's incredible performance, capturing 15 more records. The Huskies set six program records in 2012-13, and broke ten more during the 2013-14 season. Coates is no stranger to success at the conference level, as he coached Northeastern to an unprecedented five-straight America East Championships from 2000 to 2004. The Huskies annually boast some of the most competitive swimmers and divers in the region, regularly sending members to the NCAAs year-end swimming and diving championship. Five years ago, NU sent Adela Gavozdea to the national championship at Purdue, where she earned All-America honorable mention accolades for the third season in a row. In his first three seasons with the Huskies, Coates also directed the NU mens team and earned Coach of the Year honors in 1995 and 96 as NU won America East championships in both seasons. Before arriving at NU, Coates was the head coach of the mens swimming team at Dartmouth College for four seasons (1989-93). He also was an assistant for the Big Green from 1986-1989. During his seven years in Hanover, N.H., Coates was also head coach of the North Country Aquatic Club, a 120-member competitive swim program of athletes ranging in age from four to 80 years. Previously, he served as head coach at Winchester and Medford High Schools and was an assistant coach of the New England Barracudas. Besides his coaching experience, Coates is a certified Level 4 Coach by the American Swim Coaches Association and has held positions on various swimming committees. Coates is a native of Medford, Mass., and a 1986 graduate of UMass Boston with a degree in Computer Science. He earned his masters in Sports Leadership from Northeastern in 2008. Coates and his wife, Marianne, have a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Caroline, and live in Scituate.
