Hollie Bonewit-Cron
Head Coach
Bonewit-Cron joined the Nova Southeastern University coaching staff in August 2009 to head up the most recent of NSUs three athletic department expansions since being granted full NCAA membership in 2002. The addition of men's and women's swimming and diving began NCAA competition in 2010-11. During her first year, Bonewit-Cron took the time to carefully plan out the first season of competition, most of it spent on recruiting. However, it didnt take long for the word to spread that NSU had added mens and womens swimming and diving with 37 student-athletes (23 men and 14 women) joining Bonewit-Cron for the programs inaugural season. Under Bonewit-Crons guidance, the Sharks swim programs experienced instant success which started with the mens team winning the inaugural Sunshine State Conference championship in the spring of 2011, an honor that earned her the mens Coach of the Year Award. Eight first-time Sharks (six men and two women) went on to advance to the programs first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division II National Championship in San Antonio, seven of which brought home either All-America or Honorable Mention All-America Honors. The next year saw even greater success as Bonewit-Cron guided both the mens and womens programs to the SSC title. It was the second straight title for the men and first for the women. Nineteen student-athletes also advanced to the NCAA National Championships in Mansfield, Texas where Erin Black (Ft. Myers, Fla.) brought home the swimming programs first-ever individual national title in the 500y free. Each one of the 19 swimmers earned either All-America or Honorable Mention All-America honors. Although the team finished second in the SSC Championships in 2012-13, a total of 13 swimmers went on to the programs third straight appearance at the DII championships. Black successfully defended her individual title in the 500y free, while Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) won the mens 500y free securing the mens first-ever individual national title at the university. Twelve of the 13 that advanced earned either All-America or Honorable Mention All-America honors. In the programs three years of NCAA competition, Bonewit-Cron has helped NSU garner 22 SSC individual champions, 48 All-American honors, and 73 All-American Honorable Mention honors. She has also guided the program to three SSC team titles as well as three individual NCAA Division II National Champions. Under Bonewit-Crons helm, three athletes have been named the Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Meet and one has been named SSC Swimmer of the Year. Not only has Bonewit-Cron been successful in the water, she has overseen both programs that have achieved academic excellence in the classroom. Under her direction, she has produced 38 Scholar All-Americans and Scholar Honorable Mention All-America honors in three years. The womens team currently carries a 3.2 GPA while the men secured a 3.0 team grade point average. Bonewit-Cron is a 13-year collegiate coaching veteran. During her tenure at NSU, she was named the Head Olympic Swim Coach for the country of Grenada where she coached NSU standout Esau Simpson to a new Grenadian National record. Prior to NSU, she spent one year as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Miami where she was primarily responsible for overseeing and planning of the daily training regimen of the breaststroke group. She was also certified as an Infant Swimming Resource instructor. Before UM, she spent the bulk of her coaching career (2002-2008) as the assistant men's and women's swim coach at the University of Florida. She assisted in coaching and overseeing a wealth of success for the Gators including 12 NCAA DI Individual Championships, 50 Southeastern Conference Championships, 198 All-American honors for the women, 222 All-American honors for the men, and five Olympians in two Olympics for a total of 4 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. Bonewit-Cron launched her collegiate coaching career at Georgia Southern University in 2000 as the Assistant Women's Swim Coach. She was later promoted to the Interim Head Coach overseeing 28 female swimmers until assuming the position at Florida. A three-time Mid-American Conference All-First Team selection, Bonewit-Cron earned four varsity letters in swimming at Ohio University from 1996-2000. As a senior, she earned All-America honors in the 200m breaststroke. She won six MAC Championships in 2000, capturing titles in the 200y breaststroke, 400y individual medley, the 200y and 400y medley relay, and the 400y and 800y freestyle relay. Bonewit-Cron also led Ohio to the MAC team title and was a Senior National Qualifier for the third straight year. During her four-year career at Ohio, Bonewit-Cron was a 17-time MAC champion, including three consecutive titles in the 200y and 400y medley relay, as well as the 400y and 800y freestyle relay. She set school records in the 400y individual medley and MAC records in the 200y breaststroke, 400y freestyle relay, and the 200y and 400y medley relays. A three-time medalist in the 400y individual medley and two-time medalist in the 200y breaststroke, she was awarded MAC Swimmer of the Year honors after her junior season. In 2000, she was also an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100y and 200y breaststroke as well as the 400y individual medley.
