Chavez has now coached 2 Individual National Champions, Jeremy Langdale (2003) and Maroy (2015). With the victory at Nationals, Maroy also earned the 2015 Arnold Palmer Award, and 1st Team Ping All-American honors. Other Wranglers to earn post season awards were: Luke Neeley (Ping All-American, Ping All-Region), Conner Bjugstad (Ping All-Region, WJCAC All-Conference), Will Clark (Ping All-Region, NJCAA Southwest Champion, WJCAC All-Conference). What a year for the Wranglers!!! Head Golf Coach Paul Chavez is entering his 19th year at the helm of the Wrangler golf program. During his tenure, Coach Chavez has revived the OC golf program to national prominence. The Wranglers won BACK TO BACK National Championships in 2004 and 2005 and Coach Chavez was named NJCAA National Coach of the Year both years, along with being named National Coach of the Year another 3 times. The Wranglers have won 139 team championships which include: 8 NJCAA Region V Championships, 10 NJCAA Texas State Championships, and 10 WJCAC Conference Championships. During this time the Wranglers have produced 23 NJCAA All-Americans (including the 2003 and 2015 individual champion, 2004 runner-up, 2005 runner-up, and 2006 runner-up), 15 Ping All-Americans (began in 2007), 44 NJCAA All-Region, 37 NJCAA All-State, and 60 WJCAC All-Conference performers. In all 67 student-athletes have transferred to 4-year institutions, and 5 are currently playing at the professional level, including former Odessa College standout, Abraham Ancer. Ancer finished the 2015 PGA Web.Com 11th on the money list and earned his card into the PGA Tour. Ancer is the first Wrangler (under Coach Chavez) to earn his status on the PGA Tour. Ancer was the 2010 NJCAA Player of the Year (Jack Nicklaus Award) and 2010 NJCAA Freshman of the Year (Phil Mickelson Award), along with earning NJCAA All-American, Ping All-American, NJCAA All-State, NJCAA All-Region, WJCAC All-Conference, and led the Nation in Scoring Average with a 71.16. 2003-2004 was a HISTORIC year for the Odessa College Wrangler Golf Program as the Wranglers won an unprecedented 14 team championships in a row and finished the year with a perfect 119 0 record and won the 1st of 2 National Championships under Coach Chavez. During the same year, Coach Chavez was selected to coach Team USA in the World University Golf Championships (Thailand) and won the bronze medal. Coach Chavez was once again selected to coach Team USA in the 2006 World University Golf Championships and Team USA came away with the silver medal. Coach Chavez is also involved with other activities away from the golf course. He is currently the Golf Poll (Div. 1) committee member of the NJCAA Golf Coaches Association, and is a Past President of the Coaches Association as well, and was instrumental in the implementation of the Golfstat scoring system for NJCAA Golf. Coach Chavez also serves on the Golf Advisory Board for Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, Texas Junior Golf Tour Advisory Board member, Upward Basketball Coach, and has been the guest speaker at several engagements along with being involved with many church and community activities. An avid golfer, Coach Chavez has competed in the National Coaches golf tournament, finishing in the Top 5 in 1997 2000. Coach Chavez has also competed in the Odessa Cup, Mission Dorado Club Championship, Odessa City Golf Championship, and the Parent/Child Golf Tournament (which Coach Chavez and son Jaden won in 2012).. The Wranglers along with Coach Chavez have also volunteered at the Permian Basin Charity Classic (Web.com Tour), West Texas Kidney foundation, Joe Beene Golf tournament, Permian Basin Fair, Free Kids Golf Clinic, and other charity events. Coach Chavez is also proud to conduct various youth clinics and camps for children in the Permian Basin area. He also conducted the first ever Nike Golf Camp and the Odessa College Elite Golf Camps. In 2007, Odessa College acquired Champions Golf Center (formerly Legacy Golf Center) which is one of the premier practice facilities in the state of Texas. Coach Chavez serves as the manager of the facility and golf instructor. Chavez earned an associate degree from Carl Sandburg College and a B.A. in psychology with a minor in Physical Education from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He and his wife, Dottie, have two sons, Kyler 20 and Jaden 14.
