Mike Snell
Head Coach
Snell enters his 9th year as the Head Men's Basketball coach for the Fighting Scots. During his eight year tenure Coach Snell has lead the team to their most successful seasons since joining NCAA Division II with the 2014-15 year being the best in school history. As OVU enters their fourth season in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, Coach Snell looks to improve their record and leave a footprint in the new conference. Snell was a three year member of the NCAA regional advisory committee from 2010-2013. During his final year on the committee he was named the NCAA site representative for the Atlantic Region Men's Basketball Tournament. As the NCAA site representative, Snell supervised all aspects of the tournament including pregame and postgame activities. His duties included working with host site administration to make sure the tournament ran smoothly for all teams and fans. Snell has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for the past 17 years Prior to OVU, Snell was the assistant mens basketball coach and head mens tennis coach at Marietta College. Snell also served as an assistant coach at West Liberty University from 1998-2002. While at West Liberty, Snell also coached the mens golf team and served as the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). As an adjunct faculty member in the physical education and business administration departments, he also served as academic counselor to all student-athletes, as well as athletic facilities supervisor. Prior to his coaching duties at West Liberty, Snell spent the 1997-98 season with Marietta College. He began his coaching career at OVU in 1991 and helped guide the Fighting Scots to the National Small College Athletic Association Tournament in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Snell enjoyed a 2 year playing career at Ohio Valley from 1981-83. During his sophomore year, while serving as the team captain, he led the Scots in scoring and rebounding while earning NJCAA-All region honors. In 1983 Snell transferred to Ohio University where he suffered a career-ending knee injury. Snell was the head mens basketball coach and head mens tennis coach at Thiel College in Greenville, PA from 2002-2006. During his first season Snell guided the Tomcats to a regular season championship and conference tournament runner-up losing by 1 point to 2nd seeded Grove City College in the championship game. In the same year, Snells team tied the school record for overall wins in a season and broke the school record for consecutive wins. For his efforts Snell was named 2003 PAC mens basketball Coach of the year. He also had success coaching Tennis at Thiel, being named PAC Coach of the year in 2005. He received an Associate in Arts degree from Ohio Valley in 1983 and earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Ohio University in 1985. He went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Ohio University in 1995. Snell and his wife Kristy have one daughter, Lyndi.
