Kevin Andres

Head Coach

Andres has started four different wrestling programs in 16 years of being involved in collegiate wrestling. Andres has coached 37 wrestling All-Americans (20 men and 17 women), has had teams finish in the top 10 in the nation seven times, and was a four-time National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year.  Andres is also heavily involved in the NCWA and works closely as a founding member and as an executive board member. In 2007, he was inducted into the NCWA Hall of Fame. Under Andres leadership in 2014-15 the Braves finished with a dual record of 2-8 and had two student athletes qualify for the NAIA National Championships. The Braves finished 24th at nationals and Tyler Hinton earned NAIA All-American honors with his eighth place finish in the 141 pound weight class. The men's wrestling team did well in the classroom as well with Caleb Love being named a Daktronic Scholar Athlete. Prior to coming to OU, Andres spent nine years as head mens and womens wrestling coach at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. While at MU, he established NCWA and National Collegiate Womens Wrestling Association (NCWWA) wrestling programs and was the NCWA National Compliance Officer. As a compliance officer, Andres monitored eligibility of more than 100 teams and 1,100 athletes. He also participated in developing rules and regulations for the NCWA and supervised five other regional compliance officers. Under his leadership at Mercer University, the Bears won four Georgia State Championships and finished second once in the tournaments six year history. MU also amassed four top-ten finishes at the National Duals Championship, which started in 2009, and one top-ten finish at the National Championships. While at Mercer University Andres was director of recreational sports, was the Southeastern Conference commissioner for the NCWA, was the NCWA Conference chairman, and was director of campus life. Before going to Mercer University, Andres was the director of student activities, head wrestling coach, and director of camps and conferences at Belmont Abbey College. There he advised the College Union Board, the Greek Council, the Commuter Council, and the senior class. He also started an NCWA wrestling program.  While at BAC, the wrestling program had two top-10 finishes at the National Championships. Andres has also published two articles, The Role Title IX Plays in Life (or Death) of Wrestling and No Longer Just a Club. Both articles were published in . Coach Hinderliter is in his second season as a volunteer assisant coach with the men's wrestling program. As member of the OU men's wrestling coaching staff, Hinderliter helped OU qualify two student-athletes for the NAIA National Championships with Tyler Hinton earning All-American honors in the 2014-15 season. Hinderliter has been involved with wrestling since 1988 when, as Police Chief of Wellsville, Kan., he formed the Wellsville Kid Matters. He was also heavily involved with the USA Wrestling-Kansas organization. Hinderliter attended his first Silver College, a National Coaches Education Program (NCEP), in 1999 as part of the USA Wrestling. He has since instructed in over 100 Bronze level courses as part of USAW and has certified over 3,000 coaches in wrestling. In 2000, Hinderliter accepted the position of Coaches Certification and Development Manager for USAW-KS. Because of his efforts, Hinderliter was named National Instructor of the Year for USA Wrestlings NCEP in 2009 and 2012. Hinderliter was named Central Heights High Schools (CHS) head wrestling coach, a position he held from 2002 to 2014. At CHS he had 22 state qualifiers. While he was coaching at CHS, Hinderliter continued to help with USAW summer programs and Team Kansas. He is well respected in the wrestling community. In 2004, Hinderliter was named USAW-KS Kids Person of the Year and in 2009 he was the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Associations Contributor of the Year. In 2008 he was asked to help write the second edition of USAWs Bronze Book. That same year Hinderliter received USAW Gold Coaching Certification. Hinderliter enjoys golfing, fishing, and camping. He was also an assistant football coach for over 20 years at Wellsville High School and CHS. Hinderliter loves spending time with his wife Kathy Jo and their six grandchildren. Coach Nelson is in his first season as a graduate assistant coach in the OU wrestling program. Before Ottawa University, Nelson was the Program Manager and Staffing Coordinator for Camp Starlight in NE Pennsylvania. He graduated from Ohio Northern University where he wrestled for three years at 14l and 149 pounds. In addition to collegiate wrestling, Nelson was and is still currently a certified high school wrestling official in Indiana and most recently Florida. He was also the assistant wrestling coach for Tippecanoe Valley High School and Pride Wrestling Club in Jupiter. Nelson has also volunteered with Team USA and Beat the Streets during United in the Square. In high school, Nelson was a four year letterman in wrestling, and two year letterman in tennis. While wrestling he was a three year team captain, conference champion, sectional champion, regional finalist and two -time semi-state qualifier. He wrestled 125, 130, & 135 pounds.

Allen Scruggs

Assistant Coach

Scruggs was a four year letterwinner in wrestling for Campbellsville University. He was a four-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier and was named team captain in 2013. Scruggs earned 2012 Mid-South Conference Runner-up, was the 2012 Eastern Regional Champion at 184 pounds, was named a 2012 NAIA All-American and was runner-up in the 184 pound weight class, and was the 2013 Eastern Regional runner-up. Scruggs was an assistant football coach at Valwood School, helping the 2013 football team to a state runner-up. He was also an assistant wrestling coach were he coached six region champions and had three wrestlers place in state. In high school, Scruggs was a four year letterman in both football and wrestling. In wrestling he was a four-time regional finalist, was the team captain in 2008-09, twice was region champion, in 2008 he placed third at the Georgia 5A State Wrestling Tournament at 189 pounds, and was a Georgia 5A State Champion in 215 pounds in 2009.
