Joe DiMento

Head Coach

Joe DiMento was named head baseball coach at Penn State Abington on Oct. 21, 2022.  DiMento has spent the previous four seasons on the Nittany Lions coaching staff.  In 2022, DiMento served as the team's top assistant as well as hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.  The Nittany Lions set a school record with a 33-11 record and led the nation in several categories including, home runs, runs, hits, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, walks per game and total bases.    During his tenure with Abington, DiMento helped recruit and develop 21 all-conference players and nine all-region players, including the NCAA Division III National Player of the Year, Ryan McCarty.  McCarty went on to sign as an Undrafted Free Agent with the Toronto Blue Jays and spent this past summer on the team's Single-A squad in Dunedin, Fla.   In 2019, DiMento helped guide Abington to its first conference championship as the Nittany Lions won the NEAC title and earned the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.   Prior to joining Abington's staff in 2018, DiMento spent four seasons at his alma mater, Rutgers University-Camden, as an assistant coach working as the Catching Coordinator and Hitting Coach.  While on staff, Rutgers-Camden won its first NJAC Regular Season Title and earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance.    DiMento graduated from Rutgers-Camden in 2014 with a degree in Marketing and Management with a Finance minor.  He was a four-year letterman and a two-time team captain during his playing career.

Sean Westerlund

Head Coach

Sean Westerlund was named head coach of the Penn State Abington Men's Basketball program on May 13, 2025 becoming the 13th head coach in the program's history.  Westerlund is no stranger to Penn State Abington as he previously coached at near-by Bryn Athyn College as a member school in the United East Conference (UEC) for four seasons.  In his tenure with the Lions, Westerlund accumulated 55 victories, including the program's first 20-win season this past year.  Bryn Athyn finished conference play with a 15-1 record and went on to win the United East championship and secure the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Lions also placed a conference high, four student-athletes, on the All-United East teams, including Will Little - 1st Team, Jakir Hampton - 1st Team, Keith Bullock Jr. - 3rd Team, and Jalen Jackson - 3rd Team.   Prior to his time at Bryn Athyn, Westerlund spent four years as an assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Hood College.  While at Hood, Westerlund's responsibilities included, recruiting, opponent scouting reports, game and practice planning, skill development, advanced statistical analysis and fundraising. He helped bring to Hood many successful recruits, including Mason Wang (2x MACC first team, 2x D3Hoops.com All-Region second team, 2019-20 NABC All-Middle Atlantic District second team, 2018-19 ALL-ECAC honorable mention), Evan Wang (2019-20 MACC second team), Michael Riley (2018-19 MACC second team), and Scott Bolen (2016-17 MACC second team).   Before joining Hood, Westerlund was the head varsity boy's basketball coach at Harford Christian High School in Maryland from 2013 through 2016. Harford Christian won the Maryland Association of Christian Schools Athletic Conference (MACSAC) in each of Westerlund's three seasons at the helm. In the 2015-16 season, Harford Christian won the Bob Jones University National Invitational Tournament and reached the Maryland Christian School Tournament Division 1 Championship final for the first time in school history. Westerlund coached 16 All-MACSAC players, six All-Harford County players, and one DMVElite All-State player.   Westerlund started his career as the associate head varsity boy's basketball coach and junior varsity head coach at Harford Christian in 2010. In the 2012-13 season, the JV team won its first-ever conference title.   A 2013 graduate of Lancaster Bible College with a degree in Professional Counseling – Psychology and Bible, Westerlund played three sports while in college. He was a four-year men's soccer player and earned All-North Eastern Athletic Conference first-team recognition in 2011. Westerlund was an outfielder for the baseball team in his sophomore and senior years and a guard for the men's basketball program as a freshman.   Westerlund went on to earn a master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2016.

Chris Crail

Head Coach

Chris Crail enters his second season as head coach of the Penn State Abington men's golf team with the 2022-23 academic year.  Prior to coming onboard, Crail was the assistant coach for the Bucks County Community College golf team for the last 10 years. In his tenure at Bucks, the team qualified for the NJCAA Nationals 4 times, earning a 6th place finish in 2018. Additionally, Crail helped in coaching 4 All-Region qualifiers and a two-time All-American, as well. Crail played three years of Varsity golf for Burlington City High School, leading the Blue Devils in scoring for his junior year. After high school, he earned an Associates Degree from Bucks County Community College, in addition to being a part of the school’s golf team. In 2008, Crail received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport and Recreation Management from Temple University. A lifelong golfer, Crail takes any opportunity to play a round or just hit the driving range. He credits his grandfather, Terry, for always encouraging his love for the game. Crail has also spent summers as an instructor for youth golf camps and has volunteered his time assisting with local charity golf outings. Off the course, Crail works as a Financial Advisor. He resides in Ambler, PA, alongside his wife, Beth.

Jill Swavely

Assistant Coach

Jill Swavely is excited to begin her first year as Assistant Cross Country Coach for Penn State Abington. She brings a unique blend of competitive running experience and over 25 years of college teaching. A lifelong endurance athlete, Swavely has competed in cross country, track, road racing, and triathlons—including 16 marathons and three Ironman finishes—demonstrating her deep commitment to physical and mental endurance. Her background as an educator and athlete shapes her holistic approach to coaching and student development. Swavely’s coaching philosophy centers on helping student-athletes strive for continual improvement, both on and off the course. She believes in challenging runners to push beyond their perceived limits while maintaining a healthy balance and love for the sport. She is equally committed to building a positive, inclusive team culture where collaboration, mutual support, and accountability are core values.
