Dan Cozzetto

Head Coach

Cozzetto stepped onto the Bears Football sideline for the first time last August as a head coach for the first time ever.  Cozzettos coaching journey began at his alma mater-right after he completed his playing career (as a tight end, linebacker and offensive lineman) at the University of Idaho in 1979.  Cozzetto spent a dozen years with the Vandals, moving his way up the coaching change until finally winding up as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator his last two years, and helping Idaho win 5 Big Sky Championships.  From there, Cozzetto would spend the next 13 years of his life making several Pac-10 programs bowl-worthy.  Cozzetto went from Idaho to the University of California, leading the Bears to Copper Bowl and Citrus Bowl Championship in successive years.  He then followed Bruce Snyder (who hired him at Cal-Berkeley) to Arizona State University as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, and helped the Sun Devils go undefeated in conference play to win the Pac-10 title, and reach the Rose Bowl for only the second time in their storied history in 1997; then took the most potent rushing attack in ASU history (172 rushing yards per game) to an Aloha Bowl victory two years later.  After seven years in Tempe, Cozzetto longed for the Pacific Northwest again (hes born and raised in the state of Washington), so he reunited with his former boss at Idaho, Dennis Erickson, as Ericksons running backs coach at Oregon State, where he helped take them to a Pac-10 title, and a pair of bowl appearances (including a Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame in 2001) in three years.  The move to his home state became complete when he joined Rick Neuheisels staff at the University of Washington for the next two years.  Erickson gave Cozzetto his first chance at pro coaching in 2004 when he hired Dan as tight ends and offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers.  After one season at that level, the Cozzetto-Erickson combo returned to the college ranks, and returned to a pair of familiar stops:  Idaho in 06, then Arizona State for the next two years.  After taking the Devils to the Holiday Bowl (after winning a share of another Pac-10 crown), Cozzetto returned to UW for five seasons at offensive line coach and run game coordinator.   Cozzetto spent the 2014 season as run game coordinator for the FXFLs Boston Brawlers, but longed for a job in Arizona, and was fielding offers until the PC job opened up.  Year 1 saw the debut of the 6th-best passing offense in the NJCAA last year. A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from the University of Idaho, Cozzetto and his wife, Debbie, have finally decided to make Arizona their permanent home, and will celebrate their 16th year of marriage in the Grand Canyon State.  The Cozzettos are the proud parents of 4 grown children:  Adrian (40), Rachel (38), Ryan (33), and Tara (29); as well as two grandchildren. Mark Garalczyk

Coach

Garalczyk will be making his full-time college coaching debut when the Bears head to Tucson in late August, but the Bears new defensive line coach doesnt step on the Bears sideline without an abundance of knowledge about his position-both from his playing and coaching success.  Garalczyk can speak to his new charges about what it means to take over a defense, since as a player at Western Michigan University, Garalczyk was such a driving force that he was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1986, and was inducted into the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame five years ago.    His MVP credentials drew the interest of NFL scouts, and over the next five years, Garalczyk played with the Cardinals, Jets, Colts and Houston Oilers before his pro career was cut short from a neck injury.  His playing days over, Garalczyk moved to the Valley of the Sun for good, and worked in the private sector for nearly two decades before the football bug got to him again.  On the high school side, Garalczyk has enjoyed coaching stints at such Phoenix-area schools as Cactus Shadows, Horizon and Mountain View, while also spending the 2011 season on the college level as a linebacker and defensive end coach at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.   Garalczyk keeps up with his NFL ties as a member of the NFL Players Association, and continues to keep his coaching skills sharp by running youth camps and for USA Football.  Garalczyk earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at Western Michigan, and dotes on his three daughters:  Sydney, Hailey and Alyssa.
