Trey Martin

Head Coach

Martin who looks to follow up on a successful debut year on staff.  Martin helped both programs to USA South postseason appearances last season and brought in a bevy of fresh talent for long-time Head Coach Shane Wood, now in his 14th season, to work with as Piedmont continues to pursue titles on the court. "I am excited to have Trey join the tennis teams as an assistant coach," said Wood of the recent addition.  "He knows everything about the program and has shown a strong work ethic as a player that will translate perfectly into coaching.  He will make our players better and will also do a great job recruiting."   In his first season as a Graduate Assistant Coach, Martin helped the Piedmont tennis programs to 20 wins combined with each posting an appearance in the USA South Championship Tournament.  On the womens side, the Lady Lions earned a third trip to the quarterfinals in four years as a conference member while the mens team made a fourth straight semifinal appearance.    Martin was on board for Piedmonts postseason 7-2 win over Huntingdon College that handed the Lions a semifinal berth once again.  Additionally, three players earned USA South All-Conference accolades during Martins first season as a coach on Burgen Tennis Courts including the Metzger brothers on the mens side and veteran Nicole Parrish for the women.    The run by the Lions is one Martin played a large hand in as he spent the four seasons prior to coming on staff as a player for Head Coach Shane Wood posting a 44-21 overall record in singles play including a perfect 5-0 showing in his debut season with the team.  Martin displayed remarkable consistency over his final three seasons with the team posting double-digit win totals in singles play topping all Lions with his 11 wins in his sophomore year and again with 12 in his junior season. With his dozen victories in 2014, Martin also earned a 7-2 record against USA South competition winning his final five decisions of the regular season with all of those coming in league action.  Martin's only defeat against a conference foe that season came against opponents from the league's last two standing including a three-set thriller that came in the postseason against NC Wesleyan, the eventual league champ. The success of his junior season helped Martin earn All-Conference honors in 2014 as a 3rd Team selection, one of two Lions to stake a spot on the All-Conference team that season.  Martin also got it done in the classroom earning Academic All-Conference honors in the USA South twice as well and took a spot on the Director of Athletics Honor Roll in each semester he was on campus at PC.  Martin helped Piedmont to great team success as well during his four years with the men's tennis program as the Lions posted three straight top four finishes in the tough USA South Athletic Conference which in the 2015 season included the national runner-up in doubles action, Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh of North Carolina Wesleyan. The Lions also earned a postseason win in each of their last three seasons in the USA South with Martin on the squad as Piedmont joined the league just prior to his sophomore season in 2012-13.  Martin helped his Lions to back-to-back 9-0 quarterfinal shutouts of LaGrange in his final two seasons as well as a 5-3 quarterfinal victory Greensboro College in 2013.   Martin was key in the 2013 victory over the Pride of Greensboro as it was his straight sets victory at the #5 singles spot that clinched the match for the Lions handing Piedmont a spot in the USA South semis during the program's debut season in the league.   In Martin's freshman year, the youngster helped his team to an appearance in the Great South Athletic Conference Championship Match and the league's regular season title with Piedmont going a perfect 8-0 in the GSAC regular season.   Martin will bring that championship experience with him to the courts where he spent his four seasons as a player while also adding a variety of experience as a former  [7010] student-athlete at PC including heavy involvement within the community.   While enrolled as a student-athlete with the Lions, Martin served as a Piedmont Pride Leader helping a group of 20 freshmen students in their transition to college.  Martin later became the leader of the overall program at Piedmont Pride and served as a member of Team Piedmont as well, a program designed for prospective students who are interested in learning more about the college.   Martin also returned to his hometown throughout the summer to mentor high school and middle school students academically in Banks County.  Martin spent time volunteering to teach those same students the rules of the same game he played in his time as a student-athlete at Piedmont while also teaching basic tennis technique as well.  In addition to his time on the courts, Martin also ran cross country at Piedmont in his first two years on campus helping the Lions to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Conference Championship Meet, first in 2011 while PC was a GSAC member and again in Piedmont's USA South debut in 2012.  Martin was a GSAC All-Freshman honoree for his finish in 2011 placing 7th of the 31 runners at the championship event. Having graduated from Piedmont as a triple major in History, Political Science, and Secondary Education with a concentration in History, Martin was a member of Sigma Tau Delta (Writing Honors Society) and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success.  In the summer of 2015, Martin became the third NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award winner in Piedmonts athletic history with all three having been mens tennis players at PC. While serving on the tennis coaching staff as a graduate assistant, Martin will pursue his Masters degree in Education from the graduate school at Piedmont College.
