Curt Wheeler
Head Coach
Wheeler will enter his second season at the helm of the Point Loma men's and women's tennis programs in 2016. Wheeler took over the program on May 6, 2014 following the retirement of longtime PLNU coach Rich Hills. In his first season as the leader of the Sea Lions, Wheeler guided Andre Staab to become PLNU's first-ever male NCAA Division II All-American. The Point Loma men's team climbed to No. 25 in the ITA rankings before finishing the year ranked No. 26 with a 12-11 record. Three Sea Lions earned All-PacWest honors and CJ Erion was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year. The men also placed seven of its nine student-athletes on the PacWest All-Academic team with grade point averages over 3.0. The women's team was ranked in the top 25 throughout the season but they found their rhythm at the season as they made a run to the consolation title at the PacWest Championships. PLNU dropped all three doubles points before fighting back to upset Sonoma State and then came back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to defeat Azusa Pacific 5-3 in the consolation match. Freshman Nikki Newell earned second team All-PacWest honors and seven Sea Lions grabbed PacWest All-Academic honors. Prior to taking over the head job Wheeler served as an assistant coach with Point Loma for one season. In 2014, Wheeler had the opportunity to learn from coach Rich Hills and his 35 years of coaching experience while assisting with both programs. He helped lead the women's team to multiple wins against top 25 opponents and the men's squad to a deep run in the Pacific West Conference Tournament. Before Wheeler was pacing the sidelines for the Sea Lions he wore the Green & Gold for four seasons. He played his collegiate tennis at Point Loma where he was named an NAIA All-American in 2009, and his 2007 season winning percentage of .846 is still the fourth-best in school history. Wheeler graduated from Point Loma in 2010 with a degree in Psychology.
