Matt Schissel

Head Coach

Matt Schissel was promoted as Quincy University's 12th head baseball coach on July 2, 2021. He will enter his fifth season as head baseball coach in the spring of 2026. Schissel spent three seasons as the pitching coach and head assistant for the Hawks after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant.  Schissel took over pitching coach duties midway into the 2018 spring season.  Under Schissel, the Hawks advanced to their first World Series in 2017 and won back-to-back GLVC Tournament titles in 2017 and 2018. In his first year of taking over as the pitching coach, the Hawks' staff posted a team ERA of 3.83, which was the lowest it had been since 2015.  Schissel came to Quincy after finishing his playing career at Central College in Pella, Iowa. During his time in Pella, he was also a member of the football program for two years. Schissel was selected as a team captain in two seasons with the Dutch. In his first season as the head coach, Schissel led the Hawks to a 37-25 record and an NCAA tournament berth. The Hawks would reach the Super Regional for the first time since 2017. In 2023, Schissel would set the school record for wins in a season with 47. With those wins, the Hawks were GLVC regular season and postseason champions. They would clinch an NCAA tournament berth and find their way to the Super Regional for the second straight year. Outside of QU, he has also spent time working for Perfect Game Baseball, one of the top high school baseball showcase organizations in the country.    Year Record Postseason 2022 37-25 NCAA Tournament Berth, Midwest Super Regional 2023 47-11 Most Wins in School History, GLVC Regular/Postseason Champions, NCAA Tournament Berth, Midwest Super Regional 2024 28-26 2025 26-27

Connor McClennen

Assistant Coach

McClennen enters his second season with the Hawks as a graduate assistant in the spring of 2026. From Rochester Hills, Michigan, he enjoyed a standout playing career as a shortstop at Saginaw Valley State University (DII – GLIAC), where he appeared in 180 games and was a career .305 hitter. As a senior, he hit .333 and posted a .970 fielding percentage while helping the Cardinals win a school-record 41 games and advance to the Midwest Super Regional, just one step shy of the Division II College World Series. In his first season on staff, McClennen worked with the Hawks’ outfielders, guiding a group that produced two All-Conference honorees, including one with regional recognition. He also assisted with baserunning, where the Hawks saw a dramatic improvement in stolen bases, jumping from 11 in 2024 to 98 in 2025. Alongside his coaching duties, McClennen is pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree at Quincy University.
