Regis University Men's Baseball

Matt Lautz was named the 14th Head Coach of the Regis Rangers in July of 2026.  Lautz joined the Regis University baseball program in June 2021 as a Graduate Assistant Coach. He was promoted to an Assistant Baseball Coach in 2024, working primarily with Regis pitchers and as the program's Recruiting Coordinator, and was promoted to Head Coach in 2026. Since Lautz joined the coaching staff, the Rangers have put together multiple historic seasons. RU won a program record 35 wins in 2025, earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024, and have had multiple top-10 season marks in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks, hit by pitches, sacrifice flies, and stolen bases, lowest opponent batting average, strikeouts per nine innings, and saves. In his time on staff, the Rangers finished second in the RMAC standings in 2022; the highest finish for the program since rejoining the RMAC in 1996. They followed it up with a third-place finish in 2023 and a postseason run all the way to the RMAC Tournament championship game against No. 1 ranked Colorado Mesa. The 2024 squad also advanced to the RMAC Tournament championship game before earning a trip to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2012. The 2023 team set school records for runs scored (517), runs batted in (462) and stolen bases (100) while tying the program's longest winning streak of 13 games.   Prior to coming to Regis, Lautz played baseball at Santa Barbara City College from 2016-2018 before transferring to Concordia University Irvine in Irvine, CA for the 2019 and 2021 seasons. He finished his Concordia University Irvine playing career with a .343 batting average and a .448 on-base percentage.    In 2021, he was recognized as among the best NCAA DII players in the West Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) with First Team All-Region honors. He was also named First Team All-Region by the Division Two Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA).   Lautz earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science and a Master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia Irvine. He also completed a second Master's degree in 2023 through Regis University in Organizational Leadership.  

Mike Newton returned to the Regis baseball coaching staff prior to the 2022 season and was promoted to Pitching Coach in July of that year. Prior to joining the staff at Regis, Newton was the Head Coach at Erie High School and led the Tigers to a 25-16 record and made the post season two of three years, one being the Covid year in which the season was cancelled. Additionally, Newton has coached over the last 20 years at several high schools which include Niwot, Silver Creek and Lakewood. His responsibilities included pitchers, hitters and outfielders and over that time, those teams reached one final four, three final eights, two final 16's, three District Championships, two League Titles and 10 playoff appearances. Newton began his college career at Lamar Community College where he pitched and played outfield for the Antelopes and then finished his college career at Regis where he pitched, played outfield and first base. After playing at Regis, Newton stayed and was the Assistant Coach working with the pitching staff for the 1990 and 1991 seasons. The 1991 team was elected to the Regis University Hall of Fame. Newton is a native of Colorado and grew up in Lakewood where he played all three sports at Alameda High School.
