Head Coach

Clinton became the head coach for the mens soccer team in 2002. He has posted a record of 136-84-38 during that time and is 152-112-41 in his coaching career. Last season, the Engineers went 12-5-3, including 3-3-2 in the Liberty League. RPI earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament and defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-1 (in overtime), in the First Round. Five players were named All-Liberty League, including seniors Nathaniel Gunderson and Devon Baughen, who earned First Team honors. Gunderson also garnered Second Team NCSAA All-Region. RPI advanced to the Liberty League finals, before falling to St. Lawrence, 1-0, in 2014. The Engineers posted a 12-4-3 overall record, including a 6-1-1 mark in Liberty League play. Five players earned All-Liberty League recognition, including senior goalkeeper Rob Dewald, who was the conference Defensive Player of the Year and classmate Matt Koziol, who was the Offensive Player of the Year. Dewald, Koziol and junior Nathaniel Gunderson were NSCAA All-Region selections, while Dewald was tabbed as the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year. In 2013, Rensselaer went 11-5-2 and 5-1-2 in Liberty League competition for the second straight season. The team qualified for the league tournament, falling to Skidmore, 2-0, at East Campus Stadium in the semifinals. Five players were all-league selections, including junior Matt Koziol, who also earned All-East First Team and All-ECAC honors. Senior center back Jared Doolan was an Academic All-America. Rensselaer made the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years in 2012, eventually falling to Swarthmore College. The Engineers, who ended the season at 10-6-6 (5-1-2 Liberty League) had three All-Liberty League players, including Rob Dewald, Matt Koziol, Adam Updegrove, Michael Birk and Zach Fane. Additionally, Birk, Updegrove, Tyler Iosue, Jake Tonkel and William Keddy-Hector were Capital One Academic All-District honorees, with Iosue and Updegrove earning Academic All-America recognition. RPI won the Liberty League Tournament title, topping Vassar on penalty kicks in the title game.   The Engineers went 7-6-4 (2-3-3 Liberty League) during the 2011 season under Clinton's guidance. RPI had the league's Rookie of the Year in midfielder Matt Koziol, while also seeing captain Brad Shelofsky and Adam Updegrove both garner All-League Second Team recognition.  Additionally, the Engineers produced a Liberty League-best 15 selections to the All-Academic Team, while Shelofsky and Updegrove were both named 2011 Captial One National Academic All-Americans, earning First Team and Third Team, respectively. In 2010, Clinton's squad advanced to the Liberty League Championship Game after posting a record of 9-5-5 with a 4-1-2 conference mark.  Led by the league's Defensive Player of the Year, goalkeeper Alex Penny, the Engineers once again led the conference in fewest points (2.11) and fewest goals (0.74) allowed. Clinton saw his squad produce one of the best season's in program history in 2009 as the Engineers went 14-3-2 with a 5-1-1 Liberty League mark.  RPI, which was ranked as high as sixth nationally, claimed the conference's regular season title and advanced to the Liberty League Semifinals.  The Engineers went on to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, advancing to the second round.  Clinton, who earned Liberty League Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, was also named the 2009 NSCAA/Mondo Regional Coach of the Year.  His squad was powered by nine All-League selections, including NSCAA All-American and All-Conference First Team honoree, Lincoln Field. In 2008, the Engineers posted a record of 13-6-1 overall and 6-1-0 in Liberty League play.  The team played in the Liberty League Semifinals and later received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Clinton was named the Liberty League Coach of the Year, while six student-athletes earned All-Conference recognition. During the 2007 campaign, RPI captured its second ECAC Tournament title on its way to a 10-6-4 record.  The Engineers finished with a 2-3-2 mark in the Liberty League. The 2006 season saw Rensselaer go 5-11-1 and 1-6-0 in conference play. In 2005, RPI posted an 11-7-2 record and captured the ECAC Division III Upstate Championship title. Six of Rensselaers squad members were All-Liberty League selections, including senior Joe Johnson, who also earned All-Region and Academic All-America honors. Prior to coaching at Rensselaer, Clinton was an assistant at the University of Albany for one season. He was the head coach at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) for one year. Clinton has also been an assistant at Union and Skidmore Colleges. Clinton has also been a head coach on the professional level, leading the Capital District Alley Cats of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues from 1997-98. While with the Alley Cats, where he started as an assistant coach, he assisted with the day-to-day operations of the team, including recruiting the players and forming the team. Clinton played soccer at both HVCC and Keene State College in New Hampshire. At HVCC, Clinton was the teams MVP and named All-Region. At Keene he was the captain of the nationally-ranked Division II program. Clinton also played professionally for the New York Kick in the National Professional Soccer Indoor League. Clinton, who earned an A.A.S. degree in drafting design from Hudson Valley before receiving a B.S. in industrial technology from Keene, holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A license. In addition to his duties with Rensselaer, he is also a USSF State D-Level Instructor/Examiner and a director of Clifton Park Soccer Club-Premier.
