Mary Schwartz
Head Coach
Schwartz is entering her 12th season with Roanoke as the head coach of the womens lacrosse program. In 11 seasons, Schwartz has compiled a 114-79 overall record, including a 69-24 mark in the ODAC. She is the program's all-time leader for career wins at Roanoke College. Schwartz just completed her 11 th season as the head coach of the Roanoke women's lacrosse team, finishing with a record of 7-5, 7-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. During her 11 years at Roanoke, she has had seven 10-win seasons with 10 consecutive winning seasons. In 2013, Schwartz coached Roanoke to a record of 9-8. Roanoke went 8-2 in the ODAC regular season, which included a win over Washington and Lee that took three overtime periods, and was the Maroons first win over the Generals since May 6, 2009. The Maroons scored 20 or more goals in five different ODAC wins in 2013. Junior Allison Bonanno set the ODAC and Roanoke single game assists record earlier in the season with 12 assists against Randolph-Macon. Darragh Evarts was named Third Team IWLCA All-American in 2013 as well. In 2012, Schwartz took the Maroons to an 11-7 overall record, and a 7-2 mark in ODAC play. The Maroons reached the ODAC finals after a late night, 13-12 thriller against Lynchburg College. Schwartz also coached five All-ODAC Selections, including four First Team picks, as well as ODAC Rookie of the Year Darragh Evarts. In 2011, she guided the Maroons to a 12-8 mark, 6-2 in the ODAC and the programs' fifth ODAC final in six years. Schwartz also produced her second IWLCA All-American, Gina Valles, who garnered the honor three-straight years and is the ODAC's all-time leading scorer. After a 10-8 season in 2008, which the Maroons advanced to the ODAC Championship game, Schwartz took her 2009 team to new heights, finishing with a 16-5 record, 8-0 in the ODAC and capturing the ODAC Championship. Their success took the Maroons to the NCAA Regional semifinals. The conference title and undefeated conference record were the first for the program since 1999. The 16 wins tied the 1988 team for the second-most wins in the programs' history. Taking over a rebuilding program in the spring of 2005, Schwartz led her first Roanoke team to a 5-11 overall record. She quickly turned things around and in her second season led the Maroons to a 10-8 overall mark. Of the eight losses the team suffered in 2006, three came to nationally ranked opponents, one a two-goal loss to the nations fourth ranked team. The 2007 team finished 15-4 and earned a spot in the NCAA playoffs, losing in the second round to eventual National Champion, Franklin & Marshall. Schwartz came to Roanoke College after serving as the Head Womens Lacrosse Coach at Division I Davidson College in Davidson, NC. Schwartz began her tenure at Davidson in 1996, taking over a third-year varsity program, and continued her coaching duties through the 2003 season. Prior to her appointment at Davidson, Schwartz was the Head Girls Lacrosse Coach at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, PA for four years. She coached the first four high school All-Americans at Shady Side Academy and was named the Midwest School Girl's Lacrosse Association Coach of the Year in 1994. Schwartz won the 2009 ODAC Coach of the Year while guiding her team to the most wins (16) and the first ODAC Championship in 10 years While at Shady Side Academy, Schwartz was also an assistant coach with the field hockey team for three seasons. She began her coaching career in 1989 as an assistant field hockey coach at North Allegheny High School in Pennsylvania. After three years at North Allegheny, Schwartz moved to Mt. Lebanon High School to assume the head coaching duties of the schools lacrosse program, a position she held for two seasons. Active off the field as well, Schwartz has served on several NCAA Womens Lacrosse Committees, including a stint as the chairperson of the NCAA Division I South Region selection committee. She has also served as a Second Vice President of US Lacrosse and as an Executive Board member with the organization. While in Pennsylvania, Schwartz founded the Pittsburgh Womens Lacrosse Club in 1991. As of 2016, she is currently serving her second year as a NCAA Division III At Large Representative for the IWLCA Board of Directors. A four-year letter winner at the goalie position at the University of Maryland, Schwartz helped the Tarps to three NCAA Division I championship games (1982, 84, 85) and was named to both the ACCs All-Tournament team and the North/South Senior All-Star game in 1985. As a goalie with Marylands field hockey team, Schwartz also was a four-year letter recipient and still remains fourth on the Terps all-time goals against average list.
