Jake Coon
Head Coach
Coon has accomplished more in seven seasons then what some coaches accomplish in a career. In just seven seasons at RIT, Coon has led the Tigers to an astounding 127-17 record, seven straight conference titles, and seven straight trips to the NCAA Div. III Tournament, including the Tigers first-ever appearance in the National Championship game in 2013. On March 9, 2016, Coon became the winningest coach in program history winning his 128th game in a 12-8 win at Rensselaer. He needed just 143 games to reach the hallowed milestone. Coon, the 2011 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and 2013 Mens Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division III Coach of the Year, has coached 47 All-Americans, 79 all-conference selections, and six straight conference players of the year (Jordan MacIntosh - 2010, MJ Kiekebelt - 2011, Tyler Russell - 2012, Jack Krzyston 2013, Kyle Aquin 2014, and Ryan Lee -2015), and Matt Hossack, the two-time Defensive Players of the Year (2015, 2016). Last season, Coon, led the Tigers to an 18-2 overall record, helping RIT win its fifth straight Liberty League Tournament title, led by 13 All-Liberty League selections, including two-time Defensive Player of the Year (Matt Hossack). In the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers defeated John Carroll in the first round before falling to No. 11 Amherst in the second round. In 2015, Coon, the Liberty League Coach of the Year, led the Tigers to an impressive 21-1 overall record, including a 21-game winning streak, and a school record 394 goals. RIT won its fourth straight Liberty League Tournament title, led by 10 All-Conference selections, including Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year (Lee), and Defensive Player of the Year (Matt Hossack). The Tigers advanced to the National Semifinals for the third straight season. Hossack was named the Iroquois Nationals Award for Division III's Outstanding Player of the Year. In 2014, Coon led RIT to a 20-1 overall record, posting wins over seven nationally ranked teams, advancing to the NCAA National Semifinal. He led the Tigers to their third straight Liberty League tournament championship, and were the No. 1 ranked team in Division III for 12 straight weeks. Coon led the Tigers to a 19-3 overall record in 2013, earning Liberty League Coach of the Year honors. The Tigers won their second straight Liberty League Tournament title, and in the NCAA Tournament, defeated No. 5 Cabrini, No. 4 Tufts and No. 1 SUNY Cortland en route to its first National Championship Game in Philadelphia, where the Tigers fell to Stevenson 16-14. In 2012, Coon led the Tigers to a 16-3 record and a Liberty League title in the Tigers first season in the conference and a third straight trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Coon guided RIT to a then school-record 19-1 record, including a 19-game winning streak in 2011, a second straight Empire 8 title and the programs first trip to the NCAA National Semifinals since 1999. Since coming to RIT, Coon has amassed an impressive .882 winning percentage, and has led the Tigers to a 14-7 record in 21 NCAA Tournament games. A native of Homer, NY, Coon is a strong believer in community service. His student-athletes are some of the most active in that regard on campus, regularly volunteering by mentoring young students in the Rochester community. Coon came to RIT after spending five years at UMass-Amherst as an assistant coach, serving as the second assistant from 2005-06, and the first assistant from 2006 through 2009. In 2006, he helped coach the Minutemen to the Division I National Championship game. A 2001 graduate of Nazareth College, Coon excelled on the field, helping the Golden Flyers to four straight tournament appearances including the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Division III National championship game. He graduated with a bachelors degree in social science and a minor in sports management. He was a four-time All-American, two-year captain, and a two-time Division III Goalie of the Year selection. He returned to Nazareth to coach for five years (2000-2005), helping lead the Golden Flyers to four NCAA Tournament berths. He worked directly with the goalies and defense, guiding Nazareth to a national championship game appearance in 2004. Coon was inducted into the Nazareth College Hall of Fame in 2009. After graduation, he played professionally for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League from 2000-2003. Coon played for the Rochester Rattlers of the Major League Lacrosse from 2001-2005 and the Boston Cannons from 2005-2009. Coon resides in Honeoye Falls with his fiancé Kara Markham and their sons, Jackson (8) and Colson (3).
