David Warth

Head Coach

Warth enters his 20th year as the head coach of the mens cross country and mens and womens track and field programs at RIT in 2016-17. All four programs are among the best in the northeast region.   Once again, Warth and his Tigers enjoyed tremendous success in 2015-16. The womens cross country program competed at the 2015 NCAA Championship for the first time in program history and were ranked as high as No. 16 in the USTFCCCA national poll. RITs indoor track and field team won the Liberty League Championship for the third time in five seasons. Overall, 13 womens records and three mens records fell in 2015-16.   In 2014-15, Matt Giannino was a cross country All-American RITs first NCAA Atlantic Region Champion since 1996, while the womens cross country program earned a USTFCCCA national ranking for the first time. On the track side, Giannino was named the 2015 USTFCCCA Niagara Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and was a two-time All-American (3,000- and 5,000-meter indoor). Amanda White represented RIT in the 800-meters at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.   Warths teams excel in the classroom as well. The mens track and field squad earned 2015-16 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Honors for the ninth time in the last ten years, while the women earned the same honor for the sixth straight season. James Bailey, Becky Greiner and Emma Jones earned USTFCCCA All-Academic individual honors this past season. Jordan Sellers and Chris Schwab earned CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.   Warth and his staff were named the 2013 Liberty League Mens Indoor Track and Field Coaching Staff of the Year for the second straight season. The indoor distance medley team of Mike Kurvach, Cameron Lee, Giannino, and Adam Irr garnered All-American honors.   In 2011-12, the men became the first RIT squad to win a Liberty League Championship, winning the Indoor Track and Field title. In addition, the Tigers recorded a brilliant second place finish at the NYSCTC Outdoor Championships. Four Tigers earned berths to compete in the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Warth coached Mike Dempsey, who was a four-time All-American and was the national runner-up in the pole vault at both the 2010 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships.  In addition, Matt Marion was a two-time All-American in the 400-meter hurdles (2010-2011), while Jen Adams qualified for the 2010 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships in the long jump. In 2009, Mike Hardbarger earned indoor All-American honors in the mile. Hardbarger also qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, along with Matt Joseph, and Matt Marion. In 2008, Stephen Burns became RITs second individual national champion, as he won the javelin throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. Hardbarger also took home All-American honors in the 1,500-meters, finishing fifth. Warth also coached LaKeisha Perez, who was named the 2008 RIT Senior Female Athlete of the Year and was also a 2008 Indoor Track and Field NCAA Participant. Several of Warths athletes earned Academic All-American honors as well. In all, nine different mens records and four womens track and field records were shattered in 2008. In 2006-07, Warth led RIT to one of its most successful seasons to date, as the mens cross country squad made the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1996. On the womens side, Trisha Sliker and Adrienne Gagnier made the NCAAs. Warth led both the womens indoor and outdoor teams to the Empire 8 and New York State Championshipsa first for both programs. The men won both the Empire 8 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships and Warth was named the Empire 8 Coach of the Year in all four sports. In 2005-06, Warth coached two All-Americans (Allison Griggs, hammer throw; Stephen Burns, javelin) and two runners (Jimmy Sorel, hurdles and Danielle Simmons, sprints) who qualified for the NCAA Championships. In 2004-05, Warth was named the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Indoor Track Womens Coach of the Year. Warth brings a strong background in track and field to the Tigers program. The 1989 graduate of the University of Notre Dame ran cross country and track during all four years for the Irish. His long-standing 1,000-meter indoor school record was finally broken in 2006. Warth served as the head track and field coach at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester (1990-96) and continued to coach indoor track (1996-98). During that span, his teams won two Section V indoor titles and three outdoor titles. A 1985 McQuaid graduate, Warth is the holder of five indoor track records and one outdoor track record. He was a member of the 1984 New York State Class A champion Knights. Warth lives in Rochester with his wife, Mary Boutote, daughter, Katherine and son, Raymond.
