Jim Lodes

Head Coach

Lodes, RITs all-time leader in victories, will begin his seventh season in his return as head coach of the RIT womens volleyball program in 2016 and 12th overall. He returned to RIT in 2010 after serving as the head coach of the Tigers from 1991-1995. Lodes enters the 2016 season with a 292-173 career record and is just eight victories shy of 300 at the university. Last season, Lodes led the Tigers to 21 victories, as the team advanced to the Liberty League Tournament. In 2014, the squad advanced to its first Liberty League Championship match in program history, recording 22 wins.   In 2012, Lodes led the Tigers to a 26-15 overall record, wrapping up the year with a trip to the Liberty League Semifinals. In 2010, he led RIT to a 22-16 mark, helping RIT advance to the Empire 8 Tournament for the eighth time in nine seasons. Lodes has helped continue the great success the program has enjoyed in the classroom. Last year, Sarah Szybist and Kayla Wheeler earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the second straight season. Szybist is a three-time American Volleyball Coaches All-American and enters the season poised to the break the school record for kills in a career.   In 2012-13, Suzanne Jokajtys and Cat Sullivan were CoSIDA/Capital One Third Team Academic All-America selections. The duo also shared RITs prestigious Ellingson Award, which honors student athletes who excel in the classroom and on the court. In addition, the squad won the team academic award at RIT during the 2010-11 season with the highest grade-point average among all 24 athletics teams. On Oct. 20, 2012, Lodes won his 232nd match as head coach at RIT in a victory over St. Lawrence, surpassing the previous record of 231, held by Roger Worsley. In his first stint at RIT, Lodes led the Tigers to the Division III national semifinals and a third-place finish in 1993. He coached three AVCA All-Americans (Liang Gaik Khaw, Kris Gray, and Jen Polo) and three GTE Academic All-Americans (Liang Gaik Khaw, Kris Gray, and Lucy Emberg). He led the Tigers to three Empire Athletic Association titles in 1991, 1992, and 1993 and the New York State championship in 1991 and 1993. Before returning to RIT, Lodes spent four years as the head coach at the University at Buffalo. While there, he helped Buffalo to a school record 10 consecutive Division I wins in 2006 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in 2007-2008. Prior to Buffalo, Lodes was an assistant at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Highlights at UNC include the team reaching the Final Sixteen in 2002 and a No. 12 ranking in the final AVCA Poll. He was also the head coach at both Lees-McRae College, where his teams won the Carolinas-Virginia Conference regular season and tournament championships both seasons (2000 and 2001), and the College at Brockport, where they were SUNYAC finalists in 1999. He has worked with the Primo and Volley FX Junior Olympic girls teams, the Pace Bootlegger Junior Olympic boys team, served as a clinician, coached several area high school teams, and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.   On Oct. 4, 2014, Lodes reached the 400-win milestone for his overall career, as RIT defeated the University of Pittsburgh Bradford.  Lodes is 430-393 in his coaching career, spanning all three Divisions and five schools. Lodes is a 1993 graduate of SUNY Brockport. He graduated with a bachelors degree in physical education and sports management and currently lives in West Henrietta. The combination of high academic standards and volleyball tradition are important to me, stated Lodes. I enjoy coaching the quality student-athlete that this great university draws and one of my goals is to lead the Tigers back to a championship level program.   Jim Lodes Head Coach Jim Lodes, RITs all-time leader in victories, will begin his seventh season in his return as head coach of the RIT womens volleyball program in 2016 and 12th overall.
