Barry Gorman

Head Coach

Gorman returns to the court for his fourth season as Head Coach of the Roger Williams University Mens and Womens Tennis teams.   In his first season at the helm of the two programs, he guided the mens program to another strong year, finishing the regular season with a 7-1 record in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and earning the #2 seed for the tournament. The Hawks advanced to the CCC Championship for the seventh straight year, going 14-5 on the year in addition to placing four individuals on the All-CCC team. The womens program similarly claimed a 7-1 record in the CCC as well as the #2 seed and an appearance in the CCC Semifinals. The team finished 14-7 overall with four players named to the All-CCC team.   His second season saw him being named as CCC Mens Tennis Coach of the Year after guiding RWU to a perfect 7-0 conference record, as well as the programs eighth straight berth to the CCC Championship match. His Womens Tennis team finished 14-7 on the season, going 6-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and reaching the CCC Semifinal match. Five female athletes earned spots on the All-CCC team, with Alexandra Brown being named the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.   The 2015-16 campaign saw Gorman post another pair of strong seasons for both programs. The Mens Tennis team won the Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season title for the second straight season, as well as advancing to the CCC Championship Match. Gorman was honored as CCC Coach of the Year for the second straight season while coaching senior Eric Laboissonniere to CCC Player of the Year. The Womens Tennis team also earned a spot in the CCC Championship Match, tying the school record for most wins in a season  after going 16-4 overall. In addition, senior Lauren Schmidt became the Hawks all-time leader in career victories in singles with 61 and doubles with 55.   Gorman came to Roger Williams after having spent the past five seasons at nearby Bridgewater State University. During Gormans tenure at Bridgewater State, he piloted the womens tennis team to Little East Conference Championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and 2012.   His womens teams captured three straight Little East Conference regular season titles from 2010-12. Over that same period of time, he was recognized as Little East Womens Tennis Coach of the Year, receiving the honor in 2010 and 2012.   On the mens side, Gorman wrapped up his tenure as the winningest coach in the programs history, going 46-35 with a .568 winning percentage in his five seasons. In 2012, he was named the Little East Conference Mens Tennis Coach of the Year.   Gorman was an outstanding student-athlete on the BSC men's tennis team from 2005 to 2008. He capped off his illustrious career by capturing the second flight singles title at the Little East Conference Men's Tennis Tournament this past spring. Gorman completed the 2008 season with a perfect 14-0 mark in singles play.   Gorman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Bridgewater State in May of 2008.  In 2011, Barry completed his Masters of Arts degree in Physical Education with a specialization in coaching from Ball State University.   A four-year starter at singles and doubles at Bridgewater State, Gorman closed out his career with a 41-10 (.803) record in singles play while going 30-17 (.638) at doubles. Along with capturing the second flight singles championship in 2008, Gorman also teamed with Brendon Barbo to win the third flight Little East Conference championship in 2007.
