Geoff Wayton

Head Coach

Wayton has helped the Rose-Hulman cross country programs rewrite the record books in his three seasons on the FightinEngineer coaching staff.  He also serves as the distance coach and sprint relays coach for the nationally recognized Rose-Hulman men's and women's track and field programs. Wayton led the mens cross country team to its first NCAADivision IIINational Championship appearance since 1974 in the fall of 2014.  The men's team captured back-to-back Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference cross country championships in 2014 and 2015.  Rose-Hulman finished 2nd-6th individually in 2014 and captured seven of the top nine finishes in 2015. The mens squad also finished third in the NCAADivision IIIGreatLakes Regional to qualify for the 2014 National Championships.  Rose-Hulman finished second in the conference as a team during Waytons first season on campus in 2013.   Wayton is also an experienced meet director, having played an instrumental role in transforming Terre Haute into Cross Country Town USA.  He directed the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.  Wayton also served as the Meet Director for the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional Championships from 2007-15.  In the fall of 2015, Wayton served as Meet Director for the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships. On the womens side,in his first season at Rose-Hulman (2013-2014) Wayton coached Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery to the programs 2nd individual HCAC championship in cross country, and the highest individual place (3rd) at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes in program history.  Montgomery went on to place 71st at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.   On the track, Ryann-Rebecca set Rose-Hulman school records in the Mile (4:59.65) and 3,000 meters (9:59.38), while becoming the second woman to represent Rose-Hulman at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.  Outdoors, Montgomery set school records in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs, and finished the year with four individual HCAC individual crowns. On the track, Wayton's distance runners have posted ten school records during his first three years on campus.  In 2015, the Engineer men won nine of the 10 distance races at the HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  At the conclusion of 2016s Outdoor HCAC season, Wayton has coached 33 individual HCAC champions.   Wayton came to Rose-Hulman after spending the last eight seasons on the coaching staff at Indiana State University.  At Indiana State, Wayton served on the staff of 13 Missouri Valley Conference Championship teams.  Working primarily with sprints and relays, Wayton coached 12 individual Missouri Valley Conference champions, 96 All MVC performers, 14 NCAA Mid-East regional qualifiers, and NCAA East Preliminary Round Qualifiers in the womens 100m, Womens 200m, Womens 4 x 100m relay, Mens 200m, Mens 1500m, Mens 3,000m Steeplechase, and Mens 10,000m.   Wayton coached Katie Wise to the finals of the 100m dash at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field championships, and Jeremiah Vaughn to the prestigious Drake Relays 1500m title in 2012.  In his own running career, Wayton became the first Indiana State distance runner to capture an individual league title at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, was twice named all-district in cross country, and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Centennial Team in 2007. A native of Linwood, New Jersey, Wayton is a 1995 graduate of Mainland Regional High School where he was all-state in cross country three times, won a state championship in the 3200 meters, and was South Jersey Runner-of-the-Year in 1993. Wayton's brother Kurt is a high profile high school cross country and track and field coach in West Windsor, New Jersey. Wayton is married to former Indiana State cross country All-American Jessica Crowder-Wayton. Geoff and Jessica are the proud parents of Kurt Michael Wayton, born in February of 2013.

Larry Cole

Cole has led the Fightin' Engineers to nine consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field championships.  The streak also includes six consecutive HCAC indoor championships.  Between the indoor and outdoor programs, Cole has led Rose-Hulman to 15 consecutive men's track and field conference titles.  Cole has also helped Rose-Hulman individuals earn 18 All-American honors and five NCAA Division III national championships in his era at the college.  In addition, Cole helped the men's and women's teams sweep the inaugural HCACIndoorChampionships in 2011.   For his efforts, Cole has earned 16 HCAC Coach of the Year honors since 2008.  His career has featured 18 total conference Coach of the Year awards.  During Cole's tenure at Rose-Hulman, the Fightin' Engineers have combined for 171 indoor and outdoor men's and women's individual and relay conference champions since joining the HCAC in 2007. The Rose-Hulman men's and women's track and field programs have enjoy record setting success under Cole.  Since 2003, the women's program has rewritten all 21 indoor school records and set 20 outdoor standards.  The men have combined for 14 indoor and eight outdoor school records during the era. In the classroom, Cole's squad have produced 11 Academic All-Americans since 2007. Regarded by his peers as one of Division III's finest meet directors, Cole's efforts helped Rose-Hulman land the hosting role for the 2007 and 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships. He previously served as the meet director for the 1995 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Nationals at Ohio Northern. His efforts were also instrumental in Rose-Hulman securing the 2012 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at the LaVern Gibson Course in November.                  Cole's Record at Rose-Hulman Year    Conf. At Muskingum, he coached 52 conference champions, 15 NCAA Division III All-Americans, and four conference women's championship teams. Cole then moved on to Ohio Northern, where his programs produced 72 league champions, 33 All-Americans, and was twice named conference Coach of the Year from 1990-97. He was also named both the Great Lakes Region men's and women's Coach of the Year in 1996. Twenty of Cole's former student-athletes have been inducted into the Muskingum and Ohio Northern Halls of Fame. Off the track, Cole serves on the Board of Directors of the United States Track and Field and CrossCountryCoaches Association.  He currently serves as the groups treasurer.  Cole and his wife Cathy reside in Terre Haute.  Cathy recently served as the chairperson of the education department at Ivy Tech Community College.  The couple has three sons.  Matthew serves as head coach at 2016 women's NCAA Division III indoor national championship team and women's outdoor national runner-up team at Baldwin Wallace.  Brady is an instructor in exercise science at Indiana State University.  Alex is currently a senior at Purdue University.
