Joe Loughran
Head Coach
Loughran has turned Rutgers-Newark into a perennial post-season contender while pushing the program to unprecedented heights. Before his arrival in the Brick City, Rutgers-Newark had never gone to an NCAA Championship Tournament. Now the Scarlet Raiders has been in the Big Dance twice (2009-10 and 2012-13). In 2013-14, he reached the 200-win plateau while leading the Raiders their best finish ever in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Newark went 14-4 in league play and 20-9 overall to lift Loughran's career mark to 205-151. The team reached both the New Jersey Athletic Conference and ECAC Metro Championship semifinals. Last year, Loughran guided the Raiders to an overall record of 19-10 and the semifinals of both the NJAC and ECAC tournaments again, and he now boasts a 224-161 career record. In 2012-13, Loughran brought the Raiders to within a field goal of the program's first NJAC title as Rutgers-Newark fell to Ramapo, 67-65, in the league's tournament championship final but earned an NCAA At-Large berth. The team went 20-8 and posted a conference mark of 13-5. After guiding the Raiders to their first-ever NJAC championship game appearance in 2009, he led a senior-laden team to a school-record 20-8 season capped by the programs first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in 2010. The Raiders also notched a best-ever 9-4 NJAC record. His best coaching performance had to be 2010-11 when his team suffered devastating injuries early and late in the season but still managed a 19-8 record and a run to the ECAC Metro Championship Tournament final. He mixed, matched, replaced and generally shuffled lineups and strategies throughout the trying season. The squad won an unprecedented two regular-season tournaments (the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic and the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic). In 2011-12, he again managed through devastating late-season injuries to help the squad to its fourth straight winning season in the NJAC capped by attaining berths in the conference and ECAC Metro Championship playoffs. Under Loughrans guidance, Rutgers-Newark has reeled off 12 straight winning regular seasons with nine NJAC Championship Tournament showings, nine ECAC Metro Championship berths and two NCAA appearances. His career record is by far the best in Rutgers-Newarks NCAA Division III history and the Raiders string of seven consecutive winning seasons in the NJAC is unprecedented. Prior to his arrival in 2001, the Raiders had posted just two winning seasons since 1988. A pair of ECAC Metro Championship berths and one trip to the NJAC Championship Tournament were the programs only post-season journeys in over 30 seasons. The Scarlet Raiders have made the field for nine of the last 11 NJAC Championship Tournaments, earning an opening round victory to reach the semifinals in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Loughran has developed several outstanding players including All-NJAC first team selections John Snow, Pedro Burgos, Chadd Barnes, Jermont Horton, Asmar Fortney and Deshawn Singleton. Guard Justin Carter was the 2005-06 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year. Seven Raiders (Barnes, Horton, Christian Garcia, David Cherry, Singleton, Burgos and Al'Don Muhammad) have joined the 1,000-Point Club during Loughrans tenure, accounting for nearly half of the 17 Rutgers-Newark players in the schools history to reach the coveted plateau. Several of Loughrans assistants have advanced in the coaching ranks. Bill Zasowski served for one year as head coach at Ocean County College after studying under Loughran for three seasons. Zasowski earned 2005-06 Region 19 Coach of the Year Honors by leading his squad to a 20-9 record and a Garden State Conference championship before returning to Newark to serve as Loughran's associated head coach through last season. Paul Palek is now the head coach at Wayne Hills High School while Chuck Bridge is an assistant coach at the Long Island University. Former graduate intern Nick Leonardelli is now an assistant coach at Bucknell University while his predecessor Matt Adams is an assistant coach at Pfeiffer University. Former intern Mike Larkin, is an assistant coach at St. Michael's College. As the athletic academic coordinator for the department, Loughran has been instrumental in the outstanding overall performance of Rutgers-Newark student-athletes. Over the past 11 years, nearly 50 per cent of student-athletes have earned Academic Achievement Awards presented for attaining a 3.0 grade point average or better while completing a full-time course load of 12 hours or more for a semester. The Scarlet Raider Basketball Camp, coordinated by Loughran, has been a three-session day camp in The Golden Dome for the past several summers at capacity. Loughran came to the Scarlet Raiders from Stonehill College in Easton, MA, where he served as Kevin OBriens top assistant in 2000-2001. He also served as an assistant at Division I Hartford in 1999-2000 and Division II American International College from 1995-1999. Loughran began his coaching career with a two-season stint at Division III Norwich (1993-1995). Loughran earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies in 1993 and master of education in 1999 at American International College. Joe Loughrans Career Capsule SEASON AT RUTGERS-NEWARK: 15th.
