Sacramento City College Men's Wrestling

Ulrich is the main technique coach at SCC, and his knowledge of the techniques and strategies of the sport shows through the team success. He was named State Assistant Coach of the Year for 2013 and 2015, as well as Big 8 Conference Coach of the Year a number of times. He was honored with the AFLAC Assistant Coach of Year award in 2003 as well. Coach Ulrich was a graduate of Corning HS and then entered Butte College. He was a 2 time All-American for Butte College. He transferred to CSU Chico, where he was a 2 time NCAA Division II All-American as well. He graduated from CSUC with a degree in Child Development and a minor in Psychology and Business Administration. He is a member of both the Butte College and CSU Chico Hall of Fames. He works as an elementary school teacher at the Fairbanks Elementary School in the Twin Rivers School District and has been teaching in the K-6 levels for 20 years. He is married to Katie and has two sons, Sean and Jacob.          

Bio Saenz has coached at Rodriguez HS of Fairfield as well as Kennedy HS of Sacramento. Saenz started the program at Rodriguez and the West Sacramento Youth Wrestling Club. His son Lawrence Jr. attends Vacaville HS and is one of the top young wrestlers in the State and the Nation. Saenz main duties at SCC is working with the upper weights and he is in charge of technology such as video programming. He enrolled later at Sacramento City College where he won one Regional Title and was a State Medalist. He was a mainstay on the SCC State Championship team of 1996. After he graduated from SCC, he went on to wrestle for San Francisco State University and received a BA in Business Administration & Computer Information Systems. He currently is the IT Manager for Mariani Nut Company in Winters, CA. Coach Saenz lives in West Sacramento with his wife Lisa and his two children, Lawrence Jr. and Breanna.      

Bio Coach Darius Levan started on staff as an assistant coach with the Panthers in 2023-2024. This is Levan’s first time entering the collegiate coaching ranks, having coached wrestling at Armijo High School in Fairfield since the 2017-2018 season where he is also an assistant. Additionally, Levan also serves as a coach for professional MMA fighters at the Train4Life Center in Suisun City.   At City College, Levan serves under Coaches Marques Gales, Walter Ulrich, and Lawrence Saenz to foster a championship team-culture and to mentor scholar-athletes on and off the wrestling mat. Levan works closely with the lightweight and middleweight wrestlers on technical and tactical skills.   Levan graduated from Armijo High School with Highest Honors and was named Team Captain of the wrestling team. He went on to graduate magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. During the Fall 2022 season, Levan enrolled at Sacramento City College and competed for the Panthers, winning the CCCAA Northern Regional title and earning a CCCAA State medal, both at 125lbs. Levan also earned All-Big 8 Conference honors and was named Team Captain.

Pacheco and Associate Head Coach Walter Ulrich. Pacheco is entering his 37th season in coaching, 34 at SCC. Ulrich is starting his 20th season of coaching at SCC. Last season, 2015, these two along with the rest of the coaching staff, led the Panthers to their third State Championship, their 2nd in three years.  In between, they garnered a State Dual Championship in 2000. Since Coach Pacheco started coaching at SCC, they have won 14 Conference Titles and 4 Regional Titles. He has coached 20 State Champions, 88 All Americans, 164 State Medalists, 48 Regional Champions and 114 Conference Champions. He has also had 84 Academic All-Americans in his program, the most of any Community College in California. Currently, there are 17 wrestlers from SCC competing in wrestling at the four year level as well as others who continue at 4 year schools for academic purposes only.He has been named the State Wrestling Coach of the Year three times and has been regional and conference Coach of the Year many times. In addition to his duties at SCC, Coach Pacheco has led 6 cultural exchange teams to Japan, and hosted an equal number of Japanese teams in Sacramento.  His teams 10 dual wins last season put him at 260 wins overall. That is the 96th  most wins by a college coach of all time. Quite an accomplishment. Coach Pacheco is a Panther Alumnus (1976-77), where he finished 4th in the State as a sophomore. He also was one of three SCC wrestlers to earn Academic All-American awards that season, the first of the many SCC Academic AAs. He transferred to Idaho State University where he was a 2 time Big Sky Conference Champion and 2 time NCAA Division I National qualifier. He once again made the All-Academic team as well. He has been inducted into the Idaho State University Hall of Fame as well as the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, California Chapter.  A Sacramento area product, Coach Pacheco graduated from Luther Burbank HS and Sacramento City College. He holds a bachelors degree in Physical Education and Special Education from Idaho State University. He earned a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from CSU Sacramento. He resides in Sacramento with his wife, Stephanie. His son Joe graduated from Dickinson State University in North Dakota where many Panther wrestlers have competed for the DSU Wrestling program. Joe has been an Assistant Coach with SCC and currently works for the State Department of Health Services.
