Joel Beal
Assistant Coach
Beal was promoted to associate head coach on August 4, 2016 This is a very deserving promotion for Joel and were excited that hes a part of our coaching staff, said Marottolo. Joel is a very valuable cog in what were building here with our hockey program. His passion, work ethic, and knowledge are key ingredients in helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the ice. Beal will enter his fourth season at SHU this year. In his first season in 2013, the Pioneers improved by 10 wins from the year before. SHU has won at least 10 games in each of his three years on the bench. In 2014, SHU reached the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament for the first time in five years. The Pioneers have also had three All-Atlantic Hockey selections in the last three years, including Justin Danforths Rookie of the Year award in 2014 and Second Team pick this past season. Beal joined Coach Marottolo's staff in 2013 after spending two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater Union College. He helped guide Union to the ECAC Championship this past season as the Dutchmen advanced to the 2013 NCAA East Regional Finals. Before joining the Union staff, Beal served as the assistant coach of the Varsity Prep League team at Albany Academy. Beal led recruiting efforts and worked with the forwards and power play units on a daily basis. He also helped monitor the off-season and pre-season training regimen and coordinated in-season video work. Beal also served as the Head Coach of the Troy Albany Youth Hockey Minor Midget AAA team. After graduating in from Union in 2005, Beal spent three years coaching various youth hockey teams and running summer camps with the Schenectady Youth Hockey Association. A native of Brantford, Ontario, Beal is one of 19 student-athletes to reach 100 points in the history of the men's ice hockey program. As an assistant captain in 2004-05, Beal led Union to its first regular season sweep of Rensselaer, and its first playoff win in nearly 11 years. He holds the school single-season assists mark (matched by Kelly Zajac in 2010-11) after recording 29 assists in 2002-03, and he is second on the career assists list.
