Tony Schifano

Head Coach

Schifano is entering his second season as the head baseball coach for San Francisco State University. In his first season, Schifano guided the Gators to a 23-25 overall record including a 15-21 mark in the CCAA.  The 23 wins were the most since 2004 by a Gator baseball team.  SF State also produced four All-CCAA selections in Bryce Brooks, Ryan Burke, Myles Franklin and Chris Nicholson.  The Gators also had five players named to the CCAA Spring All-Academic Team in Burke, Thomas Derry, Brett Elgin, Jake Faulkner and Grant Vogenthaler.     Schifano was the recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, UC Davis, and was in charge of the Aggies offense and their outfield.  He also assisted with the coordination of practices, game management, outfield alignment, scouting reports, academics, fund raising, camps and scheduling.      Prior to being the named the head coach at SF State in 2015, Schifano assisted in the Aggies 30-26-1 overall recordjoining their 2008 squad as the only teams to record 30 wins during the programs Division I era, which received a bid to the 2008 NCAA Division I Regionals.  The Aggies also had seven All-Big West honorees including two First Team selections, the first All-Big West first team selections in the programs Division I history.    Before joining the staff at UC Davis, Coach Schifano, was the head assistant coach at Los Gatos High School in Los Gatos, Calif., from 2004-2008.  He assisted with scheduling, conducting practices, as well as running the defensive, offensive and base running drills.  Los Gatos captured 90 wins over a four-year span including a CCS Championship in 2006.    As a student athlete, Schifano enjoyed a stellar collegiate career with the Aggies from 1994-97. During that time he was a three-time All-Northern California Athletic Conference first-team selection. He was a member of the 1995 team that won a regional championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II College World Series under legendary Aggie coach Phil Swimley. Schifano still held the single season record for most chances without an error (103) and is in the top ten in several other offensive and defensive categories at UC Davis. In 2010, Schifano was inducted into the UC Davis Baseball Hall of Fame.   Schifano signed as an undrafted free agent with the Florida Marlins in 1997 and worked his way through the minor league system until making it to the Triple-A level with the Houston Astros in 2001. He also played professionally with the independent Central League and Northern League. In 2000, Schifano was a member of Team USA at the Panama Cup.   The Orange, California, native earned his BA in Political Science and Minor in Sociology from the University of California, Davis in 1997.      Matt Vaughn, Head Baseball Coach, UC Davis   "San Francisco State is making a commitment to Baseball and they could not have picked a better guy to lead their program going forward. Tony Schifano has been a big piece of the UC Davis Baseball program first as a player, and later as a coach...he is ready to lead a program.  He is a tireless coach and recruiter who truly cares about the players on and off the field.  Coach Schifano will make the players better in every aspect of their lives, and in turn, San Francisco State will be better. They are getting one of the good ones!"   Reggie Christiansen, Head Baseball Coach, Sacramento State University Tony Schifano is a tremendous hire for San Francisco State. His leadership and character are outstanding. Tony has a bright baseball mind, players are drawn to his personality and his players will love playing for him. Tony is the type of coach I'd love for my sons to play for someday.
