Joe Freitag

Head Coach

Former Monmouth College offensive coordinator Joe Freitag was named head coach for Sewanee football on December 11, 2025, the 33rd head coach in program history.   Freitag has served the last 11 years as the offensive coordinator at Monmouth, a Division III institution in Monmouth, Ill., in the Midwest Conference. He coached the offensive line for 10 years and moved to working with quarterbacks this past season for the Scots, who have posted an 85-21 record over 10 seasons (no games were played in 2020) during Freitag’s tenure on staff.   Monmouth has registered a 68-4 mark in the Midwest Conference since the start of the 2015 season, reaching the NCAA postseason in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2025 and winning conference championships in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025.   The Springfield, Ill., native helped Monmouth to back-to-back league championships in 2016 and 2017, averaging more than 500 yards of offense per game in 2016. DeAndre Wright posted consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons during those campaigns.   Joe Krall garnered All-Region honors on the offensive line in three straight seasons from 2017-19 and he was named an All-American by the Associated Press, the American Football Coaches' Association and D3football.com in 2019. Derek Brown earned All-Region accolades on the offensive line in 2022 and 2023 as well.   Freitag worked three seasons at Benedictine University in suburban Chicago from 2012-14, reaching the postseason in his last year with the Eagles.   Freitag played on the offensive line at Monmouth from 2003-06, helping the Scots to an undefeated regular season in 2005, winning their first conference title since 1976. During his four-year playing career, Monmouth registered a 34-7 overall record. He was named All-Conference three times and earned All-Region honors from D3Football.com and the Don Hansen Football Gazette as a senior. Freitag began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Coe College in 2007 and then worked two years at Augsburg College in Minnesota as the offensive line and special teams coach. From there he went to Benedictine as the offensive coordinator before returning to Monmouth for the 2015 season. Freitag earned his bachelor’s in History from Monmouth in 2007 and received his master’s in Teaching from Coe in 2010. He and his wife Amy, also a 2007 Monmouth graduate, have two children – daughter Etta and son Graham. Keenan Hickton

Head Coach

Keenan Hickton begins his first year as head coach for Sewanee men’s golf for the 2024-25 academic year.   Hickton served the last six years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Emory University, including one tournament (the 2018-19 Fall Preview) as interim head coach. Emory won that Fall Preview by 24 strokes.   During his stint as assistant coach, the Eagles held a six-year head-to-head record of 812-109 for a winning percentage of 88.2 percent. Emory earned its first-ever No.1 national ranking on GolfStat, spent nearly the entire time inside the Top 5, won 22 tournaments overall, including winning three of the four conference championships contested in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The 2020 and 2021 championships were canceled due to COVID-19.   Emory placed fifth in the NCAA Championships in 2022, 11th in 2023 and third this past season, a school record. Over six years, Hickton has coached three UAA Players of the Year, one National Freshman of the Year and one National Player of the Year and Arnold Palmer Cupper Jackson Klutznick. Former Emory All-Americans Matt Organisak and Max Schwarz made their professional debuts on the PGA Korn Ferry Tour.   As a player, the Pittsburgh, Pa., native won three UAA team championships, earning First Team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior and Second Team accolades as a sophomore. He garnered Tournament MVP laurels as a senior. He closed out his career in the No. 9 spot on the school's all-time scoring list with over 88 rounds of competition. In his senior season, he averaged 74.4 over 25 rounds of competition, including a 4-under-par 209 (70-69-70) at the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational.  As a student-athlete, he was a two-time member of the Srixon/Cleveland Golf Division III All-Scholar Team (an award only juniors and seniors are eligible to earn).   Hickton earned his bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Emory in 2018. Taylor Mottern C'18

Head Coach

Taylor Mottern C'18 is in his second season as head coach of the women's golf program at the University of the South.  A former golfer with the men's golf team, Mottern was a four-year starter. His peers elected him co-captain during his senior campaign. Averaging 75.3 strokes in 14 rounds in 2018, he earned Second Team honors on the All-Southern Athletic Association postseason listing, as he finished 11th at the SAA Championships with a 226.  In 51 career rounds with the Purple and White, he averaged 76.4 strokes.  Mottern makes the shift to the athletic department after nearly four years as Assistant Director of The Sewanee Fund. He also served as a volunteer assistant with the men’s golf program.  Additionally, he was also a P.J. Boatwright Intern for the Georgia State Golf Association in the summer of 2018.  He earned a Bachelor of Science with a music minor from the University of the South in 2018, where he was a member of the Order of the Gown, the Chi Psi fraternity and was a french horn performer with the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra. Cathell is the 11th head coach in the program's history since becoming an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 1988.   Sewanee won its third straight regular season SAA championship and claimed the program’s second consecutive conference tournament title in 2024, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The club finished 13-2-4 overall last season with an 11-match unbeaten streak before falling to Ohio Northern in the NCAA Tournament. The squad allowed just six goals in 19 matches, finishing sixth nationally in goals-against-average (.316), with 14 shutouts.   Ten players earned All-SAA honors, including Offensive Player of the Year, Brianna Fee, and Defensive Player of the Year, Ashlyn Richards, and Cathell was voted Coach of the Year for the third straight season. Five players garnered All-Region accolades and Fee was voted a Second Team All-American at the end of the season. Twenty-two student-athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll and Richards was recognized as a Third Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators.   In 2023 Sewanee posted its second consecutive regular season SAA championship and claimed the program’s first-ever consecutive conference tournament title, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers defeated Hanover College, 2-0, for the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory before falling to second-ranked Washington University.   The club finished the 2023 season 14-2-4 overall with a perfect 7-0-0 mark in league play, surrendering just 13 total goals during the campaign and posting an 18-match unbeaten streak.   Eleven players earned All-SAA honors and Cathell was voted Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Four players garnered All-Region accolades and Brianna Fee was voted a Third Team All-American at the conclusion of the year. Twenty-one student-athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll and Maggie O’Hare was recognized as a Third Team Scholar All-American by the United Soccer Coaches Association (USCA).   Sewanee claimed its second SAA regular season title in program history with a win over Centre College in 2022, defeating the Colonels for the first time in the regular season since 2014. The Tigers reached the conference tournament championship game for the second consecutive season but lost to Centre in penalties. The club finished the year ranked seventh in the region with an overall record of 13-4-2.   Eight players earned All-Conference honors, including Defensive Player of the Year, Kate Thomson, and Newcomer of the Year, Kylene Monaghan, while his peers voted Cathell as Coach of the Year. Three players garnered All-Region accolades and 24 athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll.  The 2021 squad finished the year 11-5-3 overall, defeating Centre in penalties on the road to reach the SAA Tournament championship for the first time in program history. The Tigers were ranked ninth in Region VI at the conclusion of the year, Cathell’s first full campaign with the program. Five players earned All-SAA honors while two athletes garnered All-Region accolades, the first All-Region selections for the program since 2016. In the classroom, Sewanee set a program-record with 31 selections to the SAA Academic Honor Roll, and the team achieved the Team Academic Award from the USCA. In Cathell’s first season with the Tigers, the program played one official game in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic.   Cathell has posted a 100-46-24 career record in 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach with stops at Centenary College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Sewanee. Prior to his arrival at Sewanee, Cathell spent three seasons as head coach at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., registering a 29-21-3 record. The program recorded just 20 wins in its first five years in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) before his arrival. He coached 11 players to All-Conference accolades during his three seasons. Cathell led the Ladies to their best finish in program history in the Division III era in 2019, finishing a 16-3-0 mark with a 10th-place ranking in the United Soccer Coaches West Region poll. Additionally, the 16 wins tied a school record, also set in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Migui Boldrin was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Year and later earned All-America honors from the USCA. Prior to his time in Shreveport, Cathell served as an assistant women's soccer coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., an NCAA Division I program. During the 2016 season, he coached seven All-Conference players as well as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The team posted a 9-7-3 record and a No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament, earning the highest seed for the program in 12 seasons. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Cathell served as the head women's soccer coach at NCAA Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. His teams excelled both on-and-off the pitch, as the Engineers boasted a 19-12-8 record in two seasons. His squads also received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic Award both years and he coached the first women's soccer Athletic and Academic All-American at Rensselaer.   He worked four years as the assistant women's soccer coach and head recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division III Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., helping recruit a freshmen class that posted a combined 34-17-6 record over three seasons, including two regular season Capital Athletic Conference championships and two trips to the CAC Tournament championship game with one CAC Tournament title and one NCAA Tournament appearance. Cathell also recruited and coached the first Seagulls women's soccer player to earn CAC Rookie of the Year accolades. From 2003-08, he coached soccer at Delmar High School in Delmar, Del., with stints as both the boys and girls head coach. In 2008, he garnered both the State of Delaware Coach and Small School Coach of the Year honors. Cathell played Division I athletics for four years at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) and was named All-Conference in 2003 and to the All-Tournament Team in 2006. He graduated from UMES in 2009 with a bachelor’s in Secondary Education with a Social Studies concentration. He received a master’s in Education/Post-Secondary Education from Salisbury in December 2012. Cathell holds a national coaching diploma and advanced regional coaching diploma from the USCA. He is married to the former Mia Weber from Delmar, Md., and the couple has four children – Hope, Ty, Eli and Faith. Joey Vaughan

Joey Vaughan begins his first season at Sewanee for the 2026 season as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach for the Tigers.   Vaughan spent last season at Averett University in Danville, Va., serving as Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Pass Game Coordinator as well as coaching defensive backs for the Cougars. He worked with three of the Top 10 players in the conference in pass break-ups.   The Oakton, Va., native worked one year at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham in Florham, N.J., in 2024 as the Defensive Pass Game Coordinator as well as coaching defensive backs and specialists. He tutored a pair of all-conference selections, helping the Devils to a 7-4 record, the second-most wins in program history in a single season, as well as winning the school's first MAC-Centennial Bowl game.   Vaughan served three years at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., from 2021-23 as Quality Control and Safeties Coach, instructing multiple all-conference selections and one All-American in 2022. The Sea Gulls won conference championships in 2021 and 2022, earning berths in the NCAA Division III playoffs.   Vaughan earned his bachelor’s in Communications with a minor in Coaching as well as History from Salisbury in 2021. Longtime high school coach Justin Cunningham enters his first season at Sewanee, serving as the offensive line coach for the Tigers in 2025.   The Cowan, Tenn., native played offensive line at Austin Peay and started his coaching career with the Governors as a graduate assistant and assistant offensive line coach in 2010. He then worked two years as the offensive line coach at Smyrna High in Smyrna, Tenn., with the Bulldogs reaching the first round of the TSSAA playoffs in 2011, before serving one season as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Harnett Central High in Angier, N.C.   Cunningham returned to Tennessee in 2014 as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Springfield High in Springfield, Tenn., helping the Yellow Jackets to an 8-4 mark in 2014 and the second round of the state playoffs and a 9-4 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the playoffs in 2015. He then worked three seasons as offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Blackman High in Murfreesboro, Tenn., with the Blaze reaching the quarterfinals in 2016 and the second round of the playoffs in 2017 and 2018.   He spent one year at Rockvale High in Murfreesboro as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2019, the first year for the Rockets program, before serving three seasons as head coach at Franklin County High in Winchester, Tenn. The Rebels improved from 2-8 in his first season to 5-6 and then 7-4, reaching the first round of the playoffs in his final two campaigns.   Cunningham worked the last two years as offensive line coach and run game coordinator for legendary high school coach Gary Rankin at Boyd Buchanan School in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Buccaneers finished 13-1 and state runner-up in 2023 and posted a 12-1 record last season, losing in the semifinals of the playoffs.   Cunningham earned his bachelor’s in Education from Austin Peay in 2009 and received a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from APSU in 2016. Mason Hoehn C'16 enters his sixth season as an assistant coach in 2026 with the men's lacrosse program at his alma mater.   The Tigers ended the 2025 campaign with an 11-7 record, falling in the SAA Tournament championship game for the third straight season. Nine players were voted All-SAA, including James Bogusky and Manoli Loupassi on the First Team, and a program-record 32 student-athletes were recognized on the SAA Academic Honor Roll. Four players were named Academic All-District® as selected by the College Sports Communicators as well. In 2024, Sewanee finished 11-5 overall for the second straight campaign, earning SAA regular season co-champions before falling in the SAA Tournament championship game for the second consecutive year. Nine players were voted All-SAA. Drew Perun garnered Honorable Mention All-American accolades by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, four players were named Academic All-District®, as selected by the College Sports Communicators, and a program-record 26 student-athletes were selected to the SAA Academic Honor Roll. During the 2023 season, the Tigers posted an 11-5 record, registering double-digit wins for the first time since 2019. Sewanee secured a share of the SAA regular season championship and a second straight SAA Tournament championship game appearance. Sewanee garnered 10 All-Conference selections, matching its highest total since 2017, and DiBernardo was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. Two student-athletes were recognized on the All-Region Team by the IMLCA.  In the classroom, three athletes were voted Academic All-District®, selected by the College Sports Communicators. In addition, a then program-best 25 student-athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll.   The 2022 team finished 9-9 overall but played its best at the end of the year. Entering the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Tigers won three straight games, including an overtime victory in the semifinals versus Birmingham-Southern, to clinch the program's fifth tournament championship.   Sewanee knocked off Rhodes in the championship game, securing its sixth appearance into the NCAA Championships. The program earned a home game in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, defeating Benedictine (Ill.) in the first round for the first NCAA Tournament victory in for the Tigers. Four players were named All-Conference and in the classroom, 15 were listed on the Academic Honor Roll. Because of COVID restrictions in 2021, the team played only three matches, but 20 student-athletes were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll. A former four-year letterwinner with the men's lacrosse team at Sewanee, Hoehn played in 43 career games with the Tigers. He was a member of four SAA regular season championships and three SAA Tournament titles. Additionally, he was a part of four NCAA Tournament appearances from 2013-16.   Hoehn joined the Sewanee athletic department from Centre College, where he served as an assistant coach with the men's lacrosse program for the 2020 season. He worked as the program's defensive coordinator, with the Colonels allowing 6.6 goals per game. Along with his responsibilities on the field, he assisted in creating scouting reports with film and recruiting.   Prior to his time in Kentucky, Hoehn spent the 2017-19 seasons at McDaniel College in Maryland. He worked with defenders and served as a goalkeepers coach during his first season.   Hoehn earned his bachelor's in History with a Business minor from Sewanee in 2016 and a master's in Kinesiology from McDaniel College in 2019. Four players were named Academic All-District® as selected by the College Sports Communicators as well. Orem played five years at Sewanee, with two of those seasons altered by COVID-19.   He earned Second Team All-SAA honors as a junior, registering 34 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers, and Honorable Mention accolades as a senior, collecting 27 ground balls.   Orem was named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll in 2021 and 2023 and SAA Defensive Player of the Week twice in the 2022 campaign, tallying 37 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers during that season.   The Tigers won the SAA Tournament championship in 2022 and tied for a regular season title in 2024. He ranks second in program history in ground balls by a defenseman and was a three-time team captain.   Previous coaching experience includes leading the No Excuse Lacrosse, a summer travel team, from 2019-23.   Orem earned his bachelor’s from Sewanee in Psychology with a double minor in History and Education in 2024. Carly Normandeau C'11

Assistant Coach

A former All-Conference player and multi-sport athlete at Sewanee, Carly Grimm Normandeau begins her third season as an assistant coach with the women's lacrosse program in 2026. The Tigers posted a record-setting campaign in 2025, recording an undefeated mark in the regular season (17-0), winning the SAA regular season and conference tournament titles, the first regular season league championship since 2015. Sewanee hosted first and second-round matches in the NCAA Championships, falling to Washington and Lee.   Marlin Price was voted SAA Offensive Player of the Year while head coach Michele Dombrowski and Normandeau were named Coaching Staff of the Year. Nine players received All-SAA recognition, including Price, Brooke Sigmon, Winnie Pajcic, Ella Townsend and Kennedy Harcourt on the First Team, Sally Herrington and Sally Whitehead on the Second Team and Claire Dillard and Alex Kelly for Honorable Mention.   Pajcic garnered First Team All-Region honors while Price and Sigmon were named to the Second Team and Pajcic earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades. Twenty-three players were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll and six athletes received Academic All-District® recognition, as selected by the College Sports Communicators. Sigmon received Third Team Academic All-America® honors as well. In her first season returning to her alma mater, the Tigers finished 12-7 overall and lost in the semifinals of the SAA Championships in 2024. Seven players earned All-Conference honors, with Sally Herrington and Winnie Pajcic First Team selections. Herrington garnered All-Region accolades while 23 players were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll and four athletes received Academic All-District® recognition, as selected by the College Sports Communicators. The South Salem, N.Y., native was a member of the first recruiting class for the Tigers in 2007 and played from 2008-11 for the program. Her career culminated with the team winning the inaugural SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) championship in 2011. She earned First Team All-Conference honors as a senior for the Tigers.   Normandeau served four years as head coach at Franklin High School in Franklin, Tenn., before joining the staff at Sewanee, winning state championships with the Admirals in 2021 and 2022. Her duties at FHS included practice planning, film breakdown and scheduling while also creating and implementing a full-year schedule for summer and fall workouts as well as winter strength and conditioning. She was named the 2022 USA Lacrosse Tennessee Coach of the Year and 2021 Tennessean Midstate Coach of the Year. She represented the Central South Region on the Tennessee Girls Lacrosse Association Board for two years and began her tenure at Franklin as an assistant coach for one season before taking over the head coaching duties.   Normandeau also worked five years with No-Excuse Lacrosse as a coach for Tennessee’s Premier lacrosse travel teams for girls and boys, coaching summer and fall tournaments and assisting with the recruiting process for players within the program.   She co-founded Nashville Field Hockey in 2017, expanding the program from one-to-four teams, one youth travel club and one adult travel team in five years. Franklin High onboarded as a new partner in 2022.   Normandeau previously worked one year as an assistant lacrosse coach at Pope John Paul II Preparatory School in Hendersonville, Tenn., helping the Knights advance to the semifinals in the state tournament.   After college she served one year as a lacrosse coach and local development officer with the English Lacrosse Association in North Yorkshire, England, coaching five teams at Harrogate Ladies College (ages 12-19) along with a touring team from the United States (ages 15-18), the U15 and U18 teams for Yorkshire County and two women’s teams at Leeds University.   Normandeau earned her bachelor’s in Art and Art History from the University of the South in 2011. A two-sport athlete at Sewanee, she was a key member of the SCAC championship field hockey team that went to the national tournament in 2008 while playing from 2007-10. Updated 1/29/2026

Andrew Holloway

Former Sewanee defensive back Andrew Holloway begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Tigers in 2024.   The Spring Hill, Tenn., native spent four years on the football team while at Sewanee, posting 10 total tackles and one kick return in 18 contests. He earned SAA Academic Honor Roll accolades in his junior and senior campaigns.   Holloway earned his bachelor’s in Biology from Sewanee in May 2025. Updated 8/20/2025

Former Sewanee All-American Brianna Fee joins the staff for the 2025 season as an assistant coach.   The Lee’s Summit, Mo., native garnered Second Team All-America honors as a senior and Third Team accolades as a junior, helping the Tigers claim SAA regular season and tournament championships in both campaigns, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2023 and 2024. Fee scored both goals in the tournament title game in 2023, the second one in overtime against Rhodes, collecting Tournament MVP honors.   She earned First Team All-Region accolades, SAA Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-SAA accolades as a junior and senior. She was a Second Team All-SAA selection as a sophomore and received Honorable Mention All-SAA as a freshman.   She tallied 10 goals as a senior and collected 12 goals and three assists as a junior. Fee completed her Sewanee career with 30 goals and seven assists and helped the program to a cumulative 51-13-13 record during her four seasons.   She was a three-time selection to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team and earned SAA Academic Honor Roll accolades three times as well.   Fee graduated from Sewanee in May 2025 with her bachelor’s in Biology with a minor in Spanish. Nathan Graham

Nathan Graham begins his first season on the Sewanee football staff, coaching wide receivers and serving as the Offensive Coordinator for the Tigers.   The Monticello, Ill., native worked the last three seasons as the receivers coach at Monmouth College alongside Sewanee head coach Joe Freitag, helping the Scots to a combined 26-7 record during his tenure and a berth in the NCAA Championships this past season.   Graham mentored First Team All-Conference receivers Nate Thornton and Jackson Bergren in 2023 and 2024. Thornton garnered Second Team All-Region accolades in 2024 and set single-season (20) and career touchdown (47) receiving records that year.   Chase Newman and Jeremiah Williams earned First Team All-Conference honors and Mason Emin was a Second Team selection in 2025 as well, with Newman setting single-game receiving yards (301) and single-game receiving touchdown (4, twice) marks.   Before Monmouth he served two seasons as a receivers and defensive backs coach at Argenta-Oreana High School in Argenta, Ill., assisting with film breakdown, game and practice plans and implementing and supervising the offseason weight program for the Bombers.   Graham was a four-year starter at wide receiver and also returned punts and kickoffs at Monmouth from 2017-21, earning All-Conference honors as a returner as a sophomore and as a receiver as a senior.   He earned his bachelor’s in Physical Education with a minor in Global Public Health from Monmouth in December 2021. Cooper Gosch

Cooper Gosch joins the Sewanee football staff as defensive coordinator for the 2026 season.   The Branson West, Mo., native worked the last four years as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at Monmouth College, with the Scots registering a 35-9 record with a first round berth in the NCAA Championships in 2025. He coached seven First Team All-Conference players on the defensive line over the last four seasons, including the Defensive Lineman of the Year in all four campaigns.   Monmouth allowed 15.8, 14.0, 17.7 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, from 2022-25, with the defense posting 33, 37, 23 and 26 sacks and forcing 25, 25, 21, 27 turnovers.   Gosch spent one season as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at Nebraska Wesleyan in 2021, with the Prairie Wolves posting a 4-6 mark. He worked five months at Westminster College as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach before joining the Monmouth staff in summer 2022.   He spent three years as a graduate assistant at William Penn University, his alma mater, assisting with the defensive line and linebackers. He conducted meetings and practice group position work as well as uploading and inputting data for all film breakdowns and organized equipment for the Statesmen.   Gosch earned his bachelor’s in Sports Management with a minor in Business from William Penn in 2019 and received his master’s in Sports Management in 2021, also from William Penn.
